Ok, here goes. Do you guys remember about a decade ago there were big rumors going around that Marvel was thinking about making Wolverine gay? The fans went crazy. Everyone was pissed. And then Marvel backed-down right quick. It got me thinking, what big Marvel character could Marvel make gay without people freaking out? And I mean someone who is at LEAST a B-list character, no C-list character no one gives a crap about.

I'm thinking someone like Moon Knight, Havok, or even Hawkeye might be ok without fans freaking out. It needs to be a character that would benefit from being the character people would call "the gay superhero". It would take him from being a B-lister to an A-lister. He'd be all over the news as Marvel's first big gay superhero. What do you guy think?

I guess someone who doesn't have enough established romantic relationships with the opposite sex that it would seem really out of left field. So, Stark is out.

Moon Knight and Havok are far from B-List. More like D List from Moon Knight and C-List for Havok.

They were gonna make Wolverine gay?

Is there really a need to reveal well established characters as secretly being gay this whole time? it doesn't really make sense. I'm trying to figure out why you think that could take a C/B-list character and suddenly make them an A-lister? I don't get your logic. A superheroes sexuality has nothing to do with their popularity.

Well... they did it with Ultimate Colossus...

Thing is, its not easy to suddenly write ESTABLISHED A list characters as gay...

I mean, even Moon Knight, dude's been with Marlene for all these years... what he's going to "catch it" from Frenchie or something? Doesn't make sense to me. Hawkeye doesn't make much sense to me either... I'm just trying to think who they could suddenly write that way...

I know this seems crazy, and will drive some nuts, but there'd be quite a few storylines if Cap were... with his pre-existing difficulties with life in a strange modern world... And I think he'd be easiER to write gay than a lot of other characters...

That said, it still wouldn't be a job I'd envy... being the writer to try and pull it off...

I can see most X-men as gay or bi, but that's because the whole counter-culture, discrimination theme they have.

However I can absolutely see Wolvie being at least Bi. He's been around for a long time, and I know his thing with Cyke is accidental subtext but we have decades worth of ridiculous tension built between those two.

If sexual politics evolve at the same pace, Marvel will do something with that before 2030. That would be ridiculously awesome. Some telepath reveals their real feelings, frees them of their inhibitions or something.

Imagine a cannon Wolverine/Cyclops pairing. That would make some heads explode. I would do it just for shock value.

I don't ever remember that being a rumor. There's a site for comic book urban legends, but I didn't find anything about it. The only thing I can think of is that around the same timeframe you're talking about, Marvel came out (no pun intended) with the mini about the Rawhide Kid (predating Brokeback Mountain by 2 years btw). Before it came out, I suppose there were rumors swirling about an established character being written as gay, and maybe some people thought it could be Wolverine. I don't ever seeing anything about Marvel actually thinking of doing this.

Also, there has always been speculation that Hugh Jackman could be gay (I mean, how could a straight guy be so into musicals? :O ) Maybe that's where this comes from.

As far as he question goes, I would be hesitant to do this with an established character, unless there was anything indicating it in his/her history. I would rather them try to further establish existing characters like Northstar (who has always been one of my favorite characters, gay or straight.)

Cable.

I have zero knowledge of him ever being attracted to any women whatsoever.

Also, Balder.

People can actually picture Wolverine as gay? The guy has been around with too many women and I havent seen any hints of wanting or being attracted to him through any of that

Cable was married and had a son with a woman named Jen'skott. He was romantically involved with Domino while in X-force

Moon Knight and Havok are far from B-List. More like D List from Moon Knight and C-List for Havok.
I would place Havok as one of the B list X-men

What about Nightcrawler?
Hes one character I defiently dont as as gay and dont think he would make a believable candidate for such a reveal

I've never heard that rumor before in my life. And Marvel has done some pretty crazy things with their characters through the years but I don't think anybody at Marvel would ever entertain the idea of ever turning Wolverine gay. What would that accomplish anyway?

What would secretly revealing any established character being gay accomplish? Even if it was a Z-list character that no one cared about some fans would probably be outraged because it wouldn't make sense for the character.

If you want to see a gay comic book character just create one yourself and sell it to Marvel. The only established gay characters in Marvel that I know of are Northstar and Frenchie who is in Moon Knight. If there are more than forgive me.

keep them all as they are..if you want more gay characters...make some.

The fact is some characters play really well into the idea of having been "in the closet", where as the majority of characters - as a reader you've really got into their heads and bringing them out would just be character derailment.

Obsidian, Invisible Kid, Shatterstar, Northstar, Mikaal Thomas, John Constantine, Renée Montoya all made perfect sense and were preexisting characters. Where as taking Johnny Storm or Tony Stark and making them gay would be absurd. Also just because a guy had a girlfriend doesn't mean they weren't kidding themselves.

While I agree that being gay wouldn't suddenly make someone an A-lister, the bold part isn't exactly true.

For example, I know people who will no longer read X-Factor because of the Rictor/Shatterstar pairing. So in that case, their popularity has been affected by their sexuality.

sorry let me edit my statement

A superheroes sexuality shouldn't have any effect on their popularity or appeal to fans, but we know it will.:(

is that a little better
