Ant-Man Dammit, Janet! The official Wasp thread

To clarify the situation, Hope Van Dyne is an actual character from the comics. Particularly, the MC2 universe:

http://marvel.wikia.com/Hope_Pym_(Earth-982)

She's the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, takes up the Wasp mantle in her memory.

So as some have suggested, Janet (whom may be dead in the modern day) will likely operate in the 70s with Hank, while their daughter acts as the new Wasp alongside Scott.

Interesting.

I expressed my preference for using Janet last night, but the more I've thought about this, the more I think it makes sense to use Hope instead of shoehorning Janet in. As others have suggested ad nauseum, its entirely possible that Marvel could do something with a young Hank and Jan someday.

As long as Hope gets to suit up and not just be a love interest, it will be fine.

Agreed. I hope they go more the route they did with Extremis Pepper in Iron Man 3.

I wouldn't bet on Hope Pym/Van Dyne being a superheroine named Wasp; I'd bet on her being Hank's daughter (she is; confirmed) and Scott's love interest ($10 says she is).

At the rate they're rewriting things, I don't think there's going to *be* a Wasp in the MCU, at all. Unless, as Dr. Evil suggested, Claudia Kim emerges in AoU as an Asian-American Wasp. (But what would the point of that be, if there's a Hope Pym/Van Dyne in the MCU, and -- presumably -- a Janet Van Dyne at some point in the past....and yet *neither* is actually Wasp? While someone else *is*? Gawd. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it.)

How do you cast Evangeline Lilly and not have her play Wasp? That strikes me as unlikely.

My hope is she's a somewhat estranged daughter (even going so far as to go as Hope Van Dyne rather than Hope Pym), but, just like Scott Lang joins the fight with Hank Pym, she turns around and does the same.

Certainly, I'm not going to posit that there won't be a Wasp (based on nothing either way) and then be upset that there is no Wasp. If there isn't a Wasp, I'll probably be somewhat disappointed (although there's still room for a sequel), but I'm not going to be preemptively disappointed.

Three things come to mind right away:

1. She's probably Janet's daughter as well (which would fit with the legacy thing that this movie seems to be going for).
2. She's probably the MCU version of Wasp. Or maybe Janet was Wasp alongside Hank in the 60's and Hope is her successor like Scott Lang is Pym's. It could be a cool parallel. And Lilly has already proven that she can play an convincing badass.
3. She's probably Lang's love interest, which could lead to tension with Hank.

I'm thinking it'll be 2. So like, there'd be Ant-Man & Wasp in the '70s, with Hank and Janet, and then Ant-Man & Wasp now, with Scott and Hope.
If they don't use Wasp at all I will be super disappointed.

I don't think those were necessarily separate options. I think all three are likely. She's Janet's daughter, the MCU version of Wasp (either the first or as a successor to her mother), and a love interest (or at least suggested love interest) to Lang.

 That's my thinking as well.

I'll go a step further, and hazard a guess as to her subplot: Janet ends up dead because of Pym's "heroics" (either as an original Wasp, or just a wrong place/wrong time kind of thing), so he gives up using the Ant-Man suit and turns his back on the idea of "superheroes" that he used to believe in. Later, when he realizes he needs to use it again to stop Yellowjacket, he trains Lang to use it. Meanwhile, Hope blames her father for Janet's death, and is jealous when she finds out that Lang was selected as her father's successor instead of her, so she initially becomes Wasp to oppose Lang, but then finds herself attracted to him instead, and decides to help him.

I attended the Comingsoon.net/SHH liveblog of the panel and I could have sworn they said she was playing Hope Van Dyne .

I watched the video of the presentation, and heard both names (Hope Van Dyne and Hope Pym) used at different points.

I heard Hope Van Dyne. Maybe Hank and Jan are her estranged parents.

Remember that idiot whining about how "nobody wants to see Tony's shrieking secretary flying around blasting things"? :whatever:

I want to see Wasp, and I want to see her kick some ass, especially if it's Evangeline Lilly.

Maybe we will find that Hope is estranged, because Janet left him and took her maiden name, after he became a wife beater. :D

If that happens, Janet could still be alive.....

and played by Helen Mirren.

But Evangeline Lilly doesn't look anything like Douglas or Mirren.:oldrazz:

Now if Kate Capshaw or Kim Basinger could have been original Janet/Wasp & Hope's mother.:hubba:hubba

You know what? F*** it.

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Janet Van Dyne/Wasp. :o

LIKE WHAT I'VE SAID ON THE OTHER SITE....

I am now see the positivity on this film because now, more than ever, us FANS are now more interested in this film (kinda ironic to say the least that I was one of those people that are interested in this film in the first place because of Edgar Wright but now I'm more interested in this film that he's gone).

ANOTHER POSITIVITY that I see is that twist of take they're doing with the YellowJacket, if Ironman has his Iron Legion, then I think AntMan will benefit by spawning his creations into individual characters, it expands the MCU and it expand the Ant-Man lore all in one film.

(Then again, this is the film that is making Yellowjacket a separate character from Hank).

Yellowjacket has been a separate character from Hank before with the Rita DeMara version.

Rita's Yellowjacket and Erik Josten's Goliath were both villainous characters who took Pym's identities and later became heroes.

Josten who was a mercenary make a good bodyguard for Stoll's Darren Cross.

I really like the idea of Evangeline Lilly playing Wasp. I hoping she'll actually get to become Wasp and get some good stuff to do in the film.

Since her character is named Hope Van Dyne, I'm assuming that her character's personality will be sort of an amalgamation of the young Janet Van Dyne we know from the mainstream comic universe, and Hope Pym from one of the alternate universes. Hopefully Lilly's character will retain Wasp's essential traits: her enthusiasm, her high energy, and her strong loyalty to the people around her. As long as they keep those traits alive in her, I'll be happy.

The latest update says that Lilly is playing "Hope PYM." Lilly referred to herself as "Hope Pym." But the "Van Dyne" that bounced around during SDCC is probably legit, too, indicating what most of us guessed a long time ago: Hank and Janet were lovers/spouses in the past, and Lilly plays their daughter. The confusion over surnames probably comes because Hope is estranged from her father, maybe even blaming him for her death (yes, Janet's death: Douglas let that slip).

Douglas' interview with EW:

"My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor."

Douglas seems confused/confusing when he calls Evangeline "my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope." Before we break out the banjos and incest jokes, I'm guessing that what Mike let slip there was that Evangeline plays BOTH Janet and Hope ("she looks just like her mother").

The more I hear about this film, the more of a complete ***** up it sounds and they are literallly making it up as they go along, cast & crew are leaving left, right and centre, it's a mess of Feige's making.
