Ant-Man Dammit, Janet! The official Wasp thread

New Girl would be a decent show if she were not in it. can't stand that "actress"/"singer."

I can't stand her, either. Her faux-cutesy shtick is vomit-inducing.

I think you have to be patient as more female heroes are coming.
Marvel Studios has only been active for 6 years and opperate a two movie a year policy (except Ant-Man because its been sitting in development for years).

Marvel wanted to get the origin movies for some of the key avengers out the way first. Lady Sif's role will be bigger in Thor 2 and Pepper
will be wearing a iron man suit in iron man 3
. Gamora will be in GoTG, Black Widow back in Cap 2 and Wasp will hopefully show up in Avengers 2/Ant-Man or both.

Ms Marvel will probably get her own movie or show up in another characters or show up in phase 3 as well I would bet. Scarlet Witch may show up by the time they get to Avengers 3.

I don't think that women will be under-representated.

Basically this:
And it's easy for you to say it's okay, it's not your sex being underrepresented :o.

And also NONE of the female heroes you mentioned get to front their own movies. So yeh, they are SEVERELY under-represented.

What even is this sentence....

i think he means the super female heroes who arent on screen yet. all we got for female characters are supporting character who are in the lime light cause of plot, not cause they are super heroes. wasnt that hard to grasp lol

That was a crack at Pepper Potts/Rescue, whom he has characterized as a "shrieking secretary" before. That was sexist enough on its own, without the bit about her "sleeping her way" to power.

I'm all for Zooey Deschanel for Jan.. I love her, and don't think she's a bad actress at all.

I was kind of hoping for someone not so...WASPy?

Like maybe Meagan Good, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rinko Kikuchi or Jamie Chung?

No; no, I haven't.

I'll take credit for saying that, obviously; and if you feel it's sexist, then so be it. I've got nothing against Pepper Potts or Gwyn Paltrow at all. My beef is with the way "Rescue" was handled and created in the comics, as an affront to both Pepper's character and Tony's character, and I secretly prayed to Crom that they would never go that route in IM3. And it certainly looks like they didn't, and the MCU version of "Rescue" makes a lot more sense. So we all have Crom to thank for that. :oldrazz:

Thank you!
It would also be nice to have a female who wasn't sexualised. I'd like Ms.Marvel in that wonderful Captain Marvel costume by Jamie Mckelvie.

Ms. Marvel was taken out of that godawful thong swimsuit and given a better costume for a reason: To make her presentable for the broader (movie) audience. The same thing is being done with Gamorra's costume in GotG. Marvel is cleaning up these characters' images because the weird fanservice nonsense that works in the comics only services older male fans. If these heroines are going to achieve four-quadrant appeal they need to be presented in a way that positions them as heroic figures without demeaning them as mere sex objects.

I think there should be some sort of law passed on comics. It's disgusting that they're still sexualised in this day and age.

Look at the target audience. Same target audience it has been since 1962.

Look, both Marvel and DC --- and comics in general --- have made noble attempts to broaden the demographic of their audience for decades to women and minorities, but *very* few have bought into it. Even in 2013, the readership is still overwhelmingly --- and I DO mean overwhelmingly --- 10-30 year old white males.

That's the reason there's a disconnect between "true fanboys" and the movie fans. The movies obviously reach a much broader audience, and the demographic has changed there. And yes, that's a good thing. But as far as attracting new readership to the actual comics? Still the same old same old. And that's as much the Bullpen's fault as it is hormonal geek fandom's: most of the writers and artists for Marvel and DC are the same as they've always been for decades.

TLDR: if more women started buying the comics, the more in-tune to women's issues and the less sexist the art and storylines would become. Part one of that sentence still hasn't happened yet, so part two of that sentence is still a long way from happening, too.

Wasp isn't a overly sexualized character thankfully.

That is a Hollywood issue in general sadly.

Hollywood doesn't believe female action or superhero solo films are bankable. I don't agree with them but that seems to be what most studio heads think.

People bring up stuff like Hunger Games or Twilght in the Wonder Woman thread as an example of female lead films but to the studios what made those movies a success is the Young Adult fanbase which is why studios have been rushing around buying up the rights to YA novels instead of rushing around getting scripts for female action adventure films.

None of Marvels minority heroes like Black Panther or Luke Cage have solo films either yet but I'm not complaing about being under-represented because all the black characters are in supporting roles or feel that Marvel is prejudice.

You took my comment the wrong way.....

Yeah I was basically questioning how someone could be so ignorant

Ignorant about what? Elaborate, please.

it's not ignorant. It's a simple observation that the lead females SO far in the MCU, have been supporting characters who are only popular because of their association with the lead, and not because they are a super hero.

It's time we get some legitimate female super heroes in the MCU.

That's how I took your post, and I agree

something i haven't seen mentioned yet but might be of importance. the design of the ant-man suit (at least from the teaser) incorporated a gas mask into the helmet. this implies that he changes sizes by inhaling something. isn't that going to make it difficult for Jan to wear anything recognizable as the Wasp costume? in the comics, she had to pop a pill or use an inhalant (lacking a helmet, herself).

I would not be worried about the suit being in it's final design. Expect a completely different mask that likely shows some of his face. Movies rarely (ever?) cover the whole face (except Iron Man where we go inside the helmet to look at RDJ's face). That footage was only showing the concept, there was nothing final about it.

that doesn't really address the concern of how Jan will shrink. she gets away with it in the comic books because they have long since internalized their powers/don't need additional exposure to pym particles. how will they accomplish this in the movie with Pym having to inhale the gas through that helmet? Jan would need something similar.

You don't know it will be a gas. You don't know that will be the helmet used.

You are speculating that is the helmet and that the delivery method of the Pym particles is through a gas. Slow down the speculation. Right now, we know nothing.

It would be funny if there was a breaking bad style montage of Pym and Janet cooking up pym particle pills :woot:

Well there's nothing wrong with certain characters being sexualized (Catwoman, Emma Frost, Mary-Jane), as long as they're not sexualized as a whole.

I think there's everything wrong with it. Note all those characters are female.

Can't say I agree. Sex is a part of life.

Note all those characters are female.
Well yeah, I was talking specifically about female characters since that's what you were talking about. I can name some male characters who I think should be sexualized just as much. Gambit, Tony Stark, Fandral...

Yet I don't see them going around in very little and suggestive clothing and posing in sexual positions :o .
