Drama Damon Lindelof Developing The Leftovers at HBO

The 2nd episode felt slower paced to me compared to the pilot. Like I said, I don't think it's a negative. I'm enjoying this show very much.
I dunno. I found this episode crawled too much. I have no trouble with a slower show, but unlike Fargo and Breaking Bad, this one is a having a harder time captivating me. I really only like the cop and now his dad. Everyone else is kinda boring. So far anyhow. :(

Tom's character is a bit boring. He's being friend-zoned by a girl that's sleeping with the leader of a major cult. He's in it for all the wrong reasons. If he ends up dead by the end of Season 1 it would serve him right.

Yeah...

The crawl of this episode didn't have the beauty or wonder that Fargo/True Detective brought this year.

The emotional struggles of the characters are great to embark on with mild teasing of the mystery but outside of the Sheriff's family, I just don't care. The Cult is kind of boring with the whole Liv Tyler ordeal, and we're only getting random snippets of the other cult with the Sheriff's son.

The whole 'other guy'/shooting dogs and craziness of the Sheriff and his father before him is the only anchor of the show right now, for me.

Yeah I like the idea of his dad being totally sane and yet hearing voices from the "other" that let him know exactly what is going on. Too bad no one will believe him.

Yeah... I hope he isn't crazy and the father is a vessel or something for the "aliens" or whatever and they watch over important people through animals and such.

I wonder if The Sheriff is seeing the future slightly, with the whole deer stuff and now fire.

THe show has only had two episodes so far, and yet, I feel it's already one of the most unique shows on TV in a long long time, I find everything about it so interesting & intriguing. What's sad is that so many people won't watch it just because Lindelof created the show (yeah I know he's co-writing with Perotta), it's like a herd mentality, you can tell that a lot of them don't really have any idea who Lindelof really is or know his real body of work and they just say he sucks because everyone else says it.

And there will be those watching reluctantly and having their views tainted by their hatred for Lindelof.

I don't really know the guy, this is my first time watching his work. I do however like Peter Berg a lot. I think what I need is some more character depth which will hopefully come over the next couple of episodes. I am not planning to drop it just yet.

Berg only directed the first two episodes though. It's kind of tough to talk about character depth after two episodes though, is it not?

I watched the pilot and while the synopsis is interesting, i found all the characters rather bland.

The cops daughter makes me want to slit my wrists. I'll give it a few more eps to see if it gets more interesting. I have no problem with a show being slow paced, so long as it keeps my interest.

I'm out...Its just to damned slow for me
The cops daughter and friend ANNOYING THE **** OUTTA ME

The daughter herself isn't so bad, it's just her friend. Like those two boys said in the car "she's a really bad influence on you".

I dunno. I've watched shows with as large a cast that made me care about folks right away, this one not so much. :(

What does character depth have to do with caring about the characters right away?

Because it takes depth for me to like them. If they bore me I'll just go watch something else. :(

HBO in conversations now about the future of The Leftovers. Numbers are up on DVR. #TCA14

Why are they rushing it? Those numbers could drop drastically by mid season.

That's why they're having conversations, instead of outright ordering a second season the minute they found out the premiere numbers. In simpler terms.... they're not being Starz. :o

But the numbers for episode 2 really didn't fall off much from the premiere. If they basically stay flat, it could be in good shape.

Because HBO doesn't care about ratings, they're not that kind of channel. Even Looking, with dreadful numbers, managed to get renewal. The Leftovers is getting renewed, just a matter of time.

@Sawyer, the ratings for ep 2 were very steady yeah, not that it matters, but it's good.

HBO's Michael Lomabardo said the first episode is up to around 7 million viewers.

Yep, with HBO GO & all other platforms, that's why Nielsen ratings do not matter for HBO.

In fairness, HBO has always had lower ratings standards for comedy than drama. But even with Treme, that premiered to, like, 1.1 million and then dropped to 700,000 in week 2, and they still managed to get four seasons out of that one.

Wow, really? That's a pretty impressive jump.

Yeah, Treme is an impressive one. Plus, The Leftovers is doing well critically & as Lombardo said, they seem to be loving the show at HBO.
