There's nothing dated about the original Superman theme. It's timeless.

^ It's funny how people are quick to accuse old superhero themes of being dated yet NOBODY minds the same Bond theme in every film :P

John Williams could compose a heroic theme song for Trump and I'd still listen to it ;)

You two have seriously misinterpreted what mine and Starman's points were.

I think if they really wanted to, they could rework the williams theme/soundtrack to fit the new films the same way the new Star Wars films echo the first two trilogies. Same way they did with superman returns.

Especially if we're going to be getting a lighter version of the character from what we have previously gotten.

I was just agreeing with Gu3ree on the Superman theme being timeless.

I don't know if anybody on this forum said the old superhero themes were dated..but I'd probably just disagree. There's a reason people talk about a lot of the old scores as being iconic.

Maaaaannnn....all my fears are coming true.

There's nothing in Elfman's words, to this day, where I hear that the Classic Superman theme will be back and amped up for all to jump for joy. He's pointing to certain modified moments that will continue a legacy that is natural and reminiscent to these characters on film. I very much believe we'll hear Zimmer's score. To create a Williams-esq moment out of that is something I can and will never disagree with as long as it's handled in a way that doesn't detour from the current character and the evolution of where we may hear a classical theme that tells a story of growth and change.

Recognizing and celebrating the past whilst simultaneously making the necessary changes/course corrections to usher us into the future of these iconic characters

That’s is exactly what the first Justice League should have been, and it feels like that’s why we are getting.

Give me this in its full glory while Batman is dishing out the badassery in the batmobile and I'll be the happiest mofo on the planet. :hmr::hmr::hmr::hmr::hmr:

The thing is, with the new Star Wars trilogy, Williams isn't changing the style he established. He is continuing what he started with the OT and PT. His style changed through the decades but remained consistent. Even Michael Giacchino's score for Rogue One did its best to remain loyal to the sound and original themes, and I expect John Powell to do the same with Solo: A Star Wars Story.

As for Superman Returns, John Ottman was able to have it both ways. He stayed close to Williams' sound but also wrote new themes that fit rather well. Williams' themes stayed at the forefront, but there were new motifs for Clark, Lois, and Lex.

Depending on who directs Man of Steel 2, we might get an SR style score where the composer references both Williams and Zimmer's material but Williams' themes take precedent.

When Superman snaps Steppenwolf's neck the parademons carry him into the boom tube.

Oh lol, I read "modernity" which I assumed was about the original theme by Williams to be dated. I was making a quick post and read it too quickly just before heading outside. Sorry.

I've read several people's comments previously arguing that the original Superman theme is dated and couldn't have been used in Man of Steel, etc, etc. I respectfully disagree.

I don't think you can simply just use prerecorded material and add it into the movie, but the music can be adapted, and applied to specific scenes in the movie.

Yeah, the Williams theme is certainly not dated. It's timeless, but it simply wouldn't fit in with Snyder's Superman for obvious reasons. People have remixed the Williams theme to some MoS sequences and it just proves that it doesn't mesh with the character arc of what we got from Superman in the DCEU so far. Though, as the character changes and grows into something more classic and the familiarity that audiences can connect with, then cooperating the Williams theme into what has already been done as a sign of growth could easily work, if not, become a truly epic piece of storytelling in its own right.

Agreed.

Do like me and listen to his scores with Tim Burton (if you happen to love them like I do) and hope he'll bring back his A-game for JL and manage to fit it with the tone of the universe, instead of that AoU.

I'm really hyped to watch that moment when the Batmobile comes roaring out of the Flying Fox, especially since Whedon told Elfman to go "full-on Batman".

Yeah superman's theme isn't outdated, it would just be extremely cheesy to play. Superman smiled twice in BvS and next time he appears it's with Williams score? That theme had it's time. I want a new score. Come on people.

^ He's not using Williams score. You can't use a whole score for a two minute scene/moment. This is what Elfman told Billboard pertaining adapting Williams' Superman theme.

Danny Elfman said:
...but I also had two minutes where I had the pleasure of saying, “Let’s do John Williams’ Superman.” and that for me was heaven, because now I have a melody to twist, and I’m using it in an actually very dark way, in a dark moment. It’s the kind of thing that some fans will notice. Some won’t. It’s a moment where we’re really not sure whose side he’s on.
Most of you who resent this idea are panicking over nothing.

Elfman’s evolved and matured so much as a composer that those of you who are expecting him to devolve into his writing style from 25-28 years ago are setting themselves up for disappointment.

And those who have antipathy toward the AOU score seem to blame Elfman for the problems they had with it. However, they seem to forget that Brian Tyler, was also credited for the score, but was replaced by Elfman due to a scheduling conflict with Furious 7. Elfman had about a month to re-score what Whedon and TPTB felt needed touching up/retouching. Tyler’s music wasn’t all replaced in the film though. Honestly Elfman’s material was a lot more engaging than Tyler’s mundane efforts on it, which is somewhat ironic b/c he scored two MCU movies prior to AOU. Tyler also had more time on AOU than Elfman had before he was replaced . I didn’t care much for Tyler’s portion , but don’t feel Elfman’s portion was dull or uninspired as most believe. If he had more time and was the sole composer I believe AOU would’ve been one of the best superhero scores of the decade.

As I type this I'm at the gym listening to Fight Night and, I have to admit, while I do absolutely love what Junkie did with Batman...it wasn't BATMAN enough, if you know what I mean. He didn't perfect it. So, I'm excited to hear Elfman bring that BATMAN sound back.

****ing Danny Elfman, the hack, trying to stay relevant, ruining Snyder's vision. Bunch of hacks working at DC trying to appease literal plebs with their buzzwords...and everytime Elfman mentions John William's theme...

You people are such drama queens. :o

Ehhh...

As long as he just keeps the old themes as subtle nods, and retains the themes that have already been established, and makes the score epic? I'm in.

I can't post the video here due to a little bit of swearing in the video. But watch "The Meaning in the Music: Hans Zimmer and Time". He points out in the video that the Man of Steel theme is basically a reworking of the Williams theme with the timing in between the notes being a little bit longer.
