Daredevil reboot: official discussion thread

Came down to a somewhat generic and uninspired story, direction, and overall production, imo.

So I read up on the making of Daredevil (2003) and I have to say that I gained a lot of respect for Mark Steven Johnson. The guy really wanted to direct a Daredevil movie, and he worked his ass off twice to get it. First he managed to get the job while the rights to the character were with Sony, but then Sony lost the rights and Fox got them, and he had to start back at square one. That must have taken a lot of dedication and hard work. For that, I tip my hat to you, Mr. Johnson.

I know that he was very energic upon taking the helm of the Daredevil movie, and in fact just before DD was released I had a chance to ask him a question when he made an appearance at a weekly swap meet/convention, and I used to really believe that he could deliver. However, the work speaks for itself and I just don't think his enthusiasm translated into a quality movie for DD.

Who should be the villains in this movie? I would hope they wouldn't use both Kingpin and Bullseye again, since those were the villains in the last movie. They could use Kingpin, but perhaps give him a difference enforcer.

That's great that he's 6'4". Now make him 300 pounds and bald and we'll talk.

First of all, he's not as svelte as he used to be.

Second of all... People shave their heads, their beards.. I don't think you need to find a bald actor to play Kingpin. Which is why I find suggestions like Vin Diesel absolutely ridiculous.

Let's make another black Kingpin, only instead of MCD, give the role to Cee Lo Green.

but....but....we need a musical number with Kingpin singing "**** You" to DD

I think it'd be possible to have a character like Fisk in a film and not have him be a physical menace and more a psychological one. It may even ground the film in a more real world as opposed to having someone so large be merely a physical opposition.

Isn't Fisk BOTH? Physically imposing AND a psychological menace.

I think that's the point. Don't sacrifice either.

It just seems that if you were to put someone of such girth in a live action film and have the final showdown just be a slug-fest between two arguably super-powered people that it misrepresents the villain, especially Fisk, as just being a brute. Seems somewhat contrived and hokey in my opinion.

Have you read a Daredevil comic? Fisk is both. That's why he's so appealing. You can't take the physicality away from the smarts, or vice versa.

Too bad Marlon Brando's dead.
He would've been the *essential* Kingpin.

And he would've been a pain in the ass to work with.

Needless to say his voice was annoying and wrong for Fisk.

ryan gosling for daredvil! if you have seen drive he can do intense, fracture he did legal

If the new Daredevil movie is indeed loosely based on "Born Again" how should deal with some of the changes that the rights issue would bring? The Avengers made a cameo and Captain America played a pretty important role in that story, but Fox doesn't have the rights to those characters, so the story would have to be changed.

Also it would be hard to have Nuke in the movie, because his origins are tied to Captain America and the Super solider Serum. Perhaps it would be easier to replace Nuke with Bushwacker, who is somewhat similar to Nuke, but has no connection to Captain America.

Comic book movies rarely go "by the (comic) book," obviously. But even a DD film that stays fairly true to "Born Again" could easily get by without Cap or the Avengers, who are incidental to the storyline. Nuke would work just fine without the Cap angle.

Daredevil (2003) is good no need reebot just sequel.

I would have loved a sequel to Daredevil (2003). The director's cut is underrated.

The director's cut is better than the theatrical cut, by a wide margin, but calling it's not underrated. Overall, it's still a pretty weak film. I think a reboot, with maybe just a brief origin retelling, is definitely the way to go here.
