Sci-Fi Dark City

I wanna watch this so bad now. Is it more of a disturbing movie compaired to the matrix?

I love this movie, but I've always had one problem with it. The editing and pacing of some scenes made it look like they were shortened in order to lower the runtime of the movie. They just don't look or sound right, like they're rushed. Hopefully, these additional minutes added back correct what I think is the only problem with the movie. I read yesterday where Proyas said the DC is like an entirely different film because of the different pacing. That gives me hope.

Anyway, I found more info on what's to be expected on the DC.

The first time that Dark City has been available in High-Definition, the Blu-Ray release of the film includes the theatrical cut and the all-new director's cut, which features some MAJOR changes. In 1998, the studio (New Line) felt like Alex Proyas' first cut of Dark City was a little too complex and forced the filmmaker to add narration at the beginning and include some scenes in the opening that might explain things to us mere mortals. Of course, as any Blade Runner fan will tell you, narration in a movie like Dark City is a BAD idea. The director's cut restores the more mysterious opening, fine tunes some special effects, includes Jennifer Connelly's original vocals, and adds enough other details that it makes an already rich film feel even more complete. It's nice to have both the director's and theatrical to contrast and compare, but you don't even have to do that, as the "Director's Cut Fact Track" will fully explain what has changed. Once again, like Blade Runner, the director's cut will soon be the only version of Dark City that matters.

Not yet, thinking of buying it. Do love the movie but wondering if 15 minutes is really worth it

The way I see it, I only paid five bucks for the original DVD release at Target, and I've got a 40% off coupon at Borders, so if it's there, I'm gettin' it.

I got the DC of err.....DC the other week and didnt see much of a difference to the theatrical cut to be honest. Though its been a while since I saw the TC. Its still a very good movie with a good cast, even if some of the acting is dodgy, but The Matrix is the better movie for me. The Matrix just seems to gel better for some reason.

I also believe it is Proyas's SECOND best movie after The Crow.

Still a very good movie though, and the narration at the beginning has been cut out completely which works better for the movie.

can't wait to get this. love the movie buy have never purchased it.

I wouldn't say disturbing. It's awesome. Matrix has nothing on this movie, it's a great flick on it's own. And it's not as confusing.

If I were you, I'd get the DC....start off with that one. David Goyer and Alex Proyas...you can't go wrong with that.:cwink:

I wouldnt say it was disturbing at all, at least no more than any other sci-fi movie. Its actually very interesting to watch and brings up some good ideas about the human soul.

Im resurrecting this thread, since DC is one of my favourite movies and i tried to find some place online that sells the directors cut on blu-ray but i struck out. Im looking for the Pal/European version. I usually get my movies from this place but they are out of them. http://www.discshop.se/filmer/bluray/dark_city_directors_cut_blu_ray_import/P68648

So if anyone know where i can get ahold of a european release of the directors cut on blu-ray, lemme know please.

Didn't see a thread for this film. This is a top 10 film for me. I love the design of the film and the film noir feel. I'm finding that this film is aging very well for a 90s film. I actually prefer the directors cut since it drops the opening narration that spoils the film. If you like commentaries the bluray/DVD has the best one I've ever heard done by Roger Ebert. Oh and also Jennifer Connley at her peak. Anyone else a fan of this film?

Love this film, mayne. Jennifer Connelly nevah looked that fine again. I will check out Ebert's commentary.

Has been a fave of mine since it hit theaters. Today there would have been a way different reaction to it, I think, and probably a half ass trilogy would be tried to be gotten out of it. It ends perfectly. I don't need to see more even with unanswered questions. Sewell is great in his part, as is almost all the rest of the cast. I kind of wonder if it would have bee less expensive to make this film today, seeing how CG SFX were used in the film and at the time it was expensive to do such things the way they did. In any case, a wonderfully dark and trippy film that really is among the best fantasy/sci fi films of the 1990's.

The director's cut is even better than the TC. I love this movie. The atmosphere is simply insane.

I'm kinda surprised over the years there haven't been any tie-ins for this. Be it a graphic novel or video game type of thing. I know it didn't do well in theaters but I believe it's become more popular since. Love that Roger Ebert had it as his number one film that year. Neil Gaiman is also a fan.

Just an FYI, the link in my sig has a podcast show just put up dedicated to DARK CITY. Listen and enjoy.

Have wanted to watch this for years, especially after coming to appreciate The Crow. This might be my shot.
