Stand-Alone Movies David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to Write and Produce New Series of Star Wars Films

When I first saw the headline I thought they going to be running a live action TV show.

I have always been wary of a live action show because there is no way it could look epic enough but Game of Thrones and The Expanse prove that Star Wars could work on TV.
Me too lol. and agreed! I think we will get a show eventually, but for now, im just so happy these guys will be writing a new trilogy. So much talent! and its all thanks to Kathleen kennedy and disney.

Well the thing is... people are assuming that GoT was like their brain-child or something.

It's a George RR Martin's story.

They simply adapted the book into a show for HBO. I mean... honestly, does that give them the leeway to create something from scratch?

I get some Snyder-vibes whenever people pick up talent solely-based on materials of other people's work. It's something completely different to do something on their own.

If anything, Disney could just take a well known story from their now non-canonical library of novels and have them adapt that. But I remain skeptical unless they create successful original content not based on someone else's work.

IMDB gives a list of words used in that show. Just google "Game of Thrones Parents Guide". They use the worst ones.

And for the record, I didn't like TLJ's language. A couple instances like Poe's "big a** door" line felt very unnatural and kind of took me out of the movie. It felt like Rian Johnson was trying to push it.

Even then, TLJ's language still isn't nearly as bad as the stuff that's in GOT.

Profanity is profanity. All swear words are bad each other. There are no "worst ones".

Why are they hiring people to make Star Wars movies that have almost no writing/directing credits? Not only that, the only thing these guys are known for is a show that is widely regarded as very inappropriate and vulgar.

You know nothing, Lando. *kidding*

Sith Lords are coming.

Kennedy and Lucasfilm is so great at finding up and coming and established female talent to write and direct.

...

Here we go ...:whatever:

When Kathleen Kennedy finds a woman/women who she feels can write and direct a Star Wars movie she will make that announcement.

Amen.

The live action show is in development thought isn't it?

I read that Iger mentioned it to shareholders but I I haven't heard or read what he actually said at the time so I don't know if it is guff.

Dang it...

I knew there would be rants and raves and I had intended to post this

but I got distracted..:oldrazz:

Also, is that Stephen Daldry Kenobi movie actually happening?

I heard the rumour months ago but recently I heard several brief mentions on various podcasts phrased as though it was actually in development.

No because the good parts of the show is when they're cribbing from GRRM's work (and even then they REALLY screw up certain parts). When they have to come up with their own stuff, that's when the show suffers imo, they're not nearly as good at it.

The show is definitely their vision of GRRM's story. They cast it, hired directors, hired Ramin Djawadi, approved sets/costumes/creature designs, and even made major changes to story and characters. It's not like they're recreating comic book panels for live action. And Benioff does have his own original content... I'm not even a huge GOT fan so I don't know why I'm defending them so much :funny:

Ugh. Well, these will be the first SW movies I have no intention of seeing. They've been running GoT into the ground the last few years, and I have absolutely no faith in their writing abilities.

I have to wonder what Kennedy & Disney were thinking when they hired these two.

When I first saw the news for a split second I thought it was April 1st.

Lulz, thanks for the laugh today.

Is all that really their responsibility?

Yay more Star Wars :awesome:. I can't wait till we get more details on this as well as Rian's trilogy.

I would have really preferred someone else. Hoping for the best all the same, but can't say this is something I'm looking forward to.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

the language, sex, violence, nudity, etc is just an HBO thing

i don't even get why people (also on twitter) are freaking out about it. it's basically an HBO mandate in their shows at this point, there is ZERO chance of that happening in star wars

the real issue is the quality of their work. as stated by others, it falls apart on even a surface examination

Ye. But that's not what I'm concerned about.

I'm sure the executives can polish the material they work with. But that's only a quarter of the work. The mythology and the story that's laid out is not of their own creation.

Speaking of terms of mythology in Star Wars, it is indeed vast... but it's not as focused as a novel like Martin's GoT.

So I'm not saying it's a terrible decision... however, there are certain crutches in place that may LOOK like they're the best choice. And in Hollywood, those appear quite frequently.

I do hope some vetting is being had with these Star Wars decision... but then again... I'm slowly over the Star Wars universe as a whole.

I should not have checked to see why Kathleen Kennedy was suddenly trending on Twitter, and of course folks take issue with Kennedy not hiring more diverse or female directors.

No matter what fandom, there's always bound to be that section of fans who want directors or talent chosen not based on talent, but so they can have their United Colors of Bennetton representation.

I have yet to drink the GoT Kool aid so we'll see how they do.

Another thing...why did they choose to announce this the day after the Solo trailer dropped?

Wouldn't it make sense to announce this in mid January, during the drought of Star Wars news instead of right after a major trailer? It just seems like they're putting all their eggs in one basket.

They've got multiple tv shows in development, a Rian Johnson trilogy, multiple films from D&D, multiple anthology films in early development, and they are about to begin production on Episode 9...

Yep one basket.

I'm talking about the announcements themselves. We've just had a huge drought of Star Wars stuff during January, and we're getting ready to have an even bigger drought after Solo comes and goes. Instead of announcing this series during either of those droughts they choose to announce it right after the first Solo trailer is released (where it could easily be overshadowed).

Edit: Another unrelated complain:

It bugs me that they're announcing these movies without giving any kind of premise or idea of the storyline. Obviously I'm not expecting a full plot synopsis, but just saying "these guys are making a movie about the Old Republic" (for example) would be sufficient. We still have yet to hear what this series, Rian's trilogy, the third spinoff, and the live-action show are even about.

Yet another example of Lucasfilm expecting us to get excited for something just because "Look, it's Star Wars".

Yes, I've had it up to me eyeballs with all that "social justice" guff.

Maybe because in January happened they did not have all the T's crossed and the I's dotted. Because today is the day all the agreements and legalities were sorted.

And maybe Lucasfilm thought the news would spread better in the wake of interest for the Solo trailer.

What eggs in what basket? These are two separate projects and I really don't see what kind of dangerous gamble you see releasing two publicity announcements close too each other.
