David Fleming & John Murphy/The Score & Composer Thread

kinda wonder if they will do what the did in the short only one season made of the 1980s Superman cartoon where they used part of John Williams theme and then used it's own theme for the rest of the opening and the series itself?

I'm thinking the same. I liked the comparison another poster made how various Star Trek themes include bits of the Alexander Courage theme while still doing something different.

Thanks for that critical bit of information Donuts. Interesting....sounds like they want to use parts of JW's score but with a modern twist. Though the process for the score fills me with a bit of confidence as the TLC approach Gunn and Murphy may work out in the end. All to be revealed of course but everyone seems to love it so il just have to deal with it until i hear more i guess.

Thank heavens they didn’t feel the need to fill it with that wooooorb sound effect

Superman films need to move beyond it.

That’s like saying 007 films need to move beyond the Monty Norman theme.

Williams’ Superman theme is iconic and can be arranged differently to fit the different iterations. I am glad Gunn and Murphy did not pull a Snyder/Zimmer here.

Sure, 007 can move on.

Superman definitely should.

Just like anything, the music has to work with the vibe of whatever media we’re dealing with. I normally don’t feel the Williams theme works with every version of Superman, like how I’ve seen it used with Smallville or Cavill’s Superman. But I felt the changes worked well enough for this trailer. Remains to be seen how it works with this film.

Murphy is not a great composer. He's average to good at best. I was hoping for an actual new theme like Giacchino gave to Batman, though. Gunn should have gotten one of the greats on this.

He did 28 days later right? That’s a great score

I always loved her theme for him I like that the extended version plays over the movie length pilot I had it on DVD sadly when I got the series on Blu Ray they split it up into the way the episodes aired :(.

yeah and I have a soft spot for Lois and Clark theme too:

Where's the trailer edit to this 😭

Superman & Lois not having a proper theme song will always sting.

I wouldn't have cared if they didn't include it but I also don't mind that it is there, really apart from us dorks and some older folks... I honestly don't think the general audience won't think twice about it. The new generations watching this film probably have never watched S:TM and for them if they recognise the theme will just think oh yeah Superman.

My girlfriend has dealt with my Superman talk for 5 years now and she didn't say anything about the music...she loved Krypto and the the general vibe of the film.

Anyone notice the theme for the Fortress reveal is basically the same theme for the DC Studios intro? Really loving what I'm hearing from John Murphy's score so far. I'm quite impressed!

Nailed it. Can't wait till it's all released so I can buy it.

if he does what John Ottman did for "Returns" where he also used WIlliams stuff but added his own take to it like when Superman saved the shuttle and jet.

I wonder what prompted Gunn to bring on David Fleming as co-composer. Usually, when another composer is brought on this late in the game, it's either down to scheduling conflicts or test audiences not liking the music. I wonder if we'll ever find out.
