David Fleming & John Murphy/The Score & Composer Thread

So it appears that Gunn is using Williams’ iconic themes— or having Murphy write a variant on Williams’ sound. If that’s the case, Gunn and Murphy made the right decision.

Legit. Was featured in the motion poster promo. Although this YouTube preview seems to have a build-up by comparison.

Listening to it again, it sounds like part of a trailer, especially with how it cuts out at the end.

I like the bit that I'm hearing and as others has already mentioned WIlliams Superman march will definitley be incorporated into the score. Can't wait to hear more.

I wonder if this bit of score is a misdirect for the trailer. Where it starts out with serious footage set to this music and then we get a hard cut to something else that changes the tone, as if to **** with our expectations.

I'm okay with them interpolating Williams' theme in the new theme, though I do love the grand and majestic nature of Zimmer's Superman theme. I hope the new theme has the qualities of both, while having a life and sound of its own.

I was fully against them recycling that theme, but that version sounds nice and it certainly gives me more chills than anything John Murphy would have come up with from scratch, so I’ll take it. :funny:

If Williams theme is used then I’ll be happy. I feel like there’s a chance Gunn might feature “It’s Not Easy” song by Five For Fighting in the trailer. But I’d hope for something more upbeat or exciting like John Williams’ score.

Gotta shout out Dan Romer's Superman and lois OST. Hope this lives up to past scores.

It was rumored that they were going to use the Williams theme but I didn't want to get my hopes up.

This music transcends STM. It captures Superman's essence so brilliantly.

:res:
Damn I'm out of the loop. I didn't catch wind of that rumor at all.

I've been thinking the williams theme would be used for a while now.
All the signs pointed to it. The S on the cape, tessmacher, Otis, etc.
Plus, Gunn is a huge S:TM fan.

^^^Not necessarily... Snyder stated in an early interview that he really wanted the "S" on the back of the Cape but CGI at the time proved difficult with the Cape in the wind.

The top back half of "Corenswet's" cape has been a focal point of mine since set images been posted (simply due to Snyder's comment) & David's Cape looks more"Plastered on" from both top shoulders on down toward the "V" leading to the midde of the back, as apposed to the more loose fitting Cape's Cavill & Routh rocked (Gunn's bigger budget doesn't hurt either).

My thing is, I think directors rely too much on CG when practical effects would work much better.
I don't know if it's laziness or if they just think it's cool to do.

Would have much preferred a completely original score without the Williams theme at this point. Odd decision by Gunn IMO.

Why odd? His theme is as identifiable as star wars, bond, Indy Jones or jaws.

After listening to the new preview from the Gunn video, yeah, less of a fan of the John Williams theme being directly used in this.

For the same reasons that people have pointed out to you earlier in this thread. You can reference the Williams theme and I thought it was subtle enough in that first snippet of the score that it worked, but in that Gunn preview, it's just straight up reusing it which is massively disappointing imo and way too clingy to the John Williams theme instead of creating a new unique theme for this iteration of the character. Hans Zimmer made that aspect work with the MOS theme regardless of what anyone thinks of the Snyder movies.

And it works for Superman in different iterations. It worked for Reeve, Routh, and Cavill. It can be rearranged so it sounds different and fresh.

No reason why it can’t work with Corenswet’s version.

I completely get the thinking behing that, but to share my view :

Personally, I don't put Superman in the same category as the other examples. I hear John Williams' Superman theme the same way I hear Elfman's Batman theme: cult, almost definitive, but forever attached to a specific iteration.
Leaving aside Bond, which is perhaps the exception to the rule in my book, I'd say that Indiana Jones or Star Wars, despite new teams working on them, see production always remain within the same framework/take/continuity. Also, as 100% cinematic creations, they were born with their music, which is de facto part of them.
All of this in't the case with Superman...

That's why I'm currently very reserved about the use of this theme and the recycling of certain Zimmeresk sounds...
BUT... we've only had one minute of music and I'm open-minded: I can only ask Murphy and Gunn to prove me wrong if this really is the direction they've chosen and meticulously crafted.
