I see...

From what I've read about Byrne's work, I do like that his Superman is pretty powered down

His powering down of Superman never really bothered me, although when people say they cannot work with an extremely powerful character, I take that as an admission that they can't plot.

And it was a life lesson for Superman. It led to the much admired Exile In Space arc in the books.

A much better life lesson was when he found that even with his great powers he couldn't save his parents...either set of them. Plus those stories didn't make him a killer. It's another reason why Byrne's version should be unacceptable to anyone who understands or cares about Superman at all.

Whatever. What's done is done, and it can't be undone. So we should all stop whining, and grow up a bit. Kuro, you don't have to like the newer incarnations of Superman, that's okay. But don't insult people by saying they aren't "true fans" or that "real fans would find it unacceptable". It's just a comic. There's no need to start a war over it.

Actually, it can be undone, because DC undid it. The current Superman has never killed anyone, and was a member of the Legion as Superboy. DC knew that story was a mistake. And I'm pretty sure the vast majority of Superman fans are happy that they got rid of that story.

It's been a long time since I've read that. I do remember when WW went to speak with Bruce Wayne about it his only response was a grim "Get out." So he apparently thought there was some sort of other alternative. Everyone but WW acted as if the decision was premature, so I think she arrived at their last resort of killing way too early.

That's my general recollection. I'm admittedly missing details.

In the issue superman a almost killed Batman under the mind control of Max Lord. The Justice League tried to stop him but was unable to prevent his escape. The mind conrol wasn't that simple, it was more of creating illusions that superman thought were real, in his mind he's fighting mongul or darkseid after they've killed lois in front of him. AFter coming out of the trance he's standing over an almost dead batman, that sort of thing. He heads to earth, WW pursues. He tries to stop max himself but falls under his control making him fight ww whom he sees as Mongul. The fight was crazy brutal. In the end WW escapes gets back to Max, ties him up with the lasso of truth and asks him point blank how she can break his hold on superman, his words "kill me" so just secs before brainwashed supes can stop her she snaps his neck. This is after she tried to reason with max and figure out a way to stop his control. I know everyone seemed to condem her for what she did but to this day i haven't read an alternative. And Max wasn't lying when he said the only way to break his hold on supes was to kill him.

well no writer is ever perfect, they have their ups and their downs. They have their best stories, and then their bad stories too. Or it could be factor in by publishers and all that. For me for example i love reading spidey and i enjoyed the first few yrs of JMS run in the early 2000s but then when we had the whole gwen stacy kids/death-rebirth crap i totally hated his run. later did i find out it wasnt all his fault but publisher pushing stories on him and all that.

I actually thought that story sucked too. Superman SHOULD NEVER KILL! PERIOD. Alan Moore dealt with this theme much better in "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow".

How do those here feel about him killing an Animal?

I know in the Animated Justice league there is an episode where he is in the far distant future, where he is alone, and the sun is now red.

In fending his life, he kills a wolf. It seems like a dire enough situation, that I would fault no human for doing what he had to do there. It was one of those kill or be killed situations. That and he was effectively human there, as he had no powers.

That one never really bothered me. Maybe because it was an animal that was trying to kill him.

In normal circumstances, I think part of the reason he does not kill, especially humans, is that he has the power to handle the situation without doing so.

They critically need to distance themselves from the attitudes that Superman is NOT a killer...

Superman is a JUNGLE PANTHER, A MAN WHO LOVES THE HUNT... Have him and his superpowered claws hunt and KILL criminals and make sure his eyes are filled with soot and red dust

jokes aside, I actually didn't like too much of the powering down of Superman, I want him to remain very very very powerful and have colossal fights based around that... I want him to get beaten down only to come back with such massive overwhelming power that the villains would be sorry to even have looked at him the wrong way and be pissing their pants

The one thing I do NOT want to see in this new Superman film is Superman beating his foe by some sort of trickery or last ditch effort or psyches him out or some crap like that like they show in too many superhero films esp in Spider-Man... Superman is a warrior, have him get his butt kicked but then come back so so so strongly that he's absolutely pounding the living hell out of the villain by the end... Brawn over Brawn is what I want to see for once in a Superman film... much like how he takes down Captain Atom in JLU

I'm so going to put that in my signature. Priceless.

I agree about brawn-over-brawn; while I do want to see Superman put his intellect to good use, it would be a sin to downplay how strong he is. The Captain Atom example is a good one, and also Superman VS Darkseid in the last episode of JLU. Sure, he ended up losing that fight, but I want to see some of the same things being used (so fast and strong that there's tremors pulsating through the air and giant craters being made when he sends his enemy crashing down).

I do like how they handled that though. Darkseid had to resort to using a trap weapon, as physically alone he was not going to take Superman.

The Superman Vs Captain Marvel scene in the animated JL is similar to what I want to see. Brute strength Vs brute strength. I wanna see things in the new film like....
A) multiple buildings collapsing from the battle.
B) Superman and Brainiac's bodies creating craters when knocked to the ground.
C) cars, trucks, or even ships used as clubs.
D) I want to Not only see Metropolis in danger/ruins, but a real perceived worldwide threat as well. Maybe have other cities in other countries in ruins as well.
E) A real, honest to goodness, old fashioned, classic, don't tease us SHIRT RIP, and along with it an instrumental that makes you hold your breath.
F) The classic suit. bright colors and all.

Anything less than this will be disappointing to me...

It'd be awesome to have a brief shot of Clark. . . and then the shirt rip. . . wait a few minutes with him off camera to show relentless destruction falling on Metropolis. . . people panicking in the streets, running, screaming, some being crushed by debris while others are consumed in the flames of explosions. . . push viewers to their brink so that they'll be wondering if this Superman film has taken a turn for the "too dark and intense". . . wait a little longer. . . and then bam: show Superman zooming into the spotlight in full costume to kick ass. To banish away the viewers' sense of disgust to replace it with positive shock and awe.

I agree 110%. No need to sugarcoat Superman. Sure he can be the bright beacon of hope, we expect that, but I want the villain to be the polar opposite of Superman. He needs to think no more of humans than we do ants..He shouldn't hesitate for an instant about taking out thousands or millions at once.
Imagine Superman trying to save thousands of people at once hundreds or thousands of miles apart.
That's the kinda threat I hope he faces, not just a localized one.

Quoted for truth!

Yes, exactly! Sdo far the best on screen Superman battles have been Superman Doomsday with two and the JLU against Captain Marvel.

I'd prolly start it off having Superman take down a lesser known villain first with relative ease..
First, show the minor villain doing his thing..like throwing cars like toys, smashing in walls to rob a bank(s), and having his way with the police force that's trying to stop him.
Superman then shows up and takes him out fairly easy.

Later on, when Brainiac shows up, it would truly show how powerful Brainiac really is when he defeats Superman in their first encounter.
I mean, we just saw Superman take down that other villain easily that could throw cars and break in brick walls himself.
That would make the crowd really go dannng at seeing what Brainiac could do.

The suit shouldn't be as bright is it was in the first four movies. That wouldn't work with todays audiences. It needs to be as bright as Spider-Man's costume.

I've always wondered what it would be like if Superman wore red-and-blue boots, instead of all-red.

Agreed that was the best in in the DCAU. I would love to see something like that on the big screen. Also agree in the classic suit and bright colours too

I have this scene in my mind of seeing Clark change into Superman during a fire..
Maybe it happens in a split second and he doesn't have time to find a secluded spot, so
he just lets the fire burn off C.K.'s clothing around him, revealing his supersuit underneath.

Wouldn't that take kinda long? It would take about 5 minutes to burn off, plus he'd have to save people.

Fire doesnt work. Superman is faster than that. But an explosion could blow off his clothes and save him the trouble.

That's kinda what i'm picturing, an explosion, but in slow mo..Maybe a bomb or an accident like a gasoline tanker truck going up. Maybe even have the villain be behind it just to mess with Superman's head. Have him know his secret ID or something.

Regardless of which or how, it happens so fast Superman doesn't have time to worry about changing because lots of lives would be in immediate danger.
I'm talking danger so extreme that the explosions edge reaches folks at the same time it burns his CK exterior off.
