From what I've read about Byrne's work, I do like that his Superman is pretty powered down
His powering down of Superman never really bothered me, although when people say they cannot work with an extremely powerful character, I take that as an admission that they can't plot.
And it was a life lesson for Superman. It led to the much admired Exile In Space arc in the books.
A much better life lesson was when he found that even with his great powers he couldn't save his parents...either set of them. Plus those stories didn't make him a killer. It's another reason why Byrne's version should be unacceptable to anyone who understands or cares about Superman at all.
