Why are people looking at China like it is some great movie savior? Unless you are making up to $100 million like Iron Man or Transformers there, it does not mean anything. Why? Because after they finish getting their cut, apply taxes and tariffs, you are lucky to get out with 20-25% of what you earned. The foreign market is being coming more and more important, but unless you have a blowout it does not matter, especially if you do not do well in your home market.

Why are people looking at China like it is some great movie savior? Unless you are making up to $100 million like Iron Man or Transformers there, it does not mean anything. Why? Because after they finish getting their cut, apply taxes and tariffs, you are lucky to get out with 20-25% of what you earned. The foreign market is being coming more and more important, but unless you have a blowout it does not matter, especially if you do not do well in your home market.

Thankyou for posting this truth. I am tired of the misreading of the foreign numbers. People not learning about the box office is why we get claims that The Golden Compass was a hit because it made 300mil overseas. No the Golden Compas was still a huge flop.

People don't want to look at finances, but they are incredibly important when talking about big movies and wanting sequels, prequels or reboots. The Chinese market is not a huge factor unless you are making huge money. Need for Speed and Robocop will be lucky if they get back at least 10 million from that market. Dreamworks and Sony have bigger problems in that they have not had a true big hit for a month of Sundays and are looking a more layoffs and a major shareholder revolt, respectively. Good news for Sony that they have Spiderman in May to help some.

If X-Men falters in the U.S. and parts of Europe, where you get more bang for your buck, then I don't know. The next movie will go forward of course, but that budget will be lowered.
