Story-wise, they might be pretty evenly matched, but in terms of art, as good as Under the Red Hood looks, Mask of the Phantasm just blows it out of the water. I love that early Timm Batman stuff. Batman, Joker, The Phantasm.... all just beautiful.

Even so, I'm really looking forward to the DVD release.

In my mind, that is a very hard thing to do. But if it happens....it will blow my mind.

edit: a friend of mine got a chance to see it early and here are his thoughts on it. overall, good not great. would serve as a fairly good pilot for that adult themed hbo style batman cartoon everyone is always saying they want.

cast was excellent, only person who could conceivably be considered a weak point would be isacs. dimagio as the joker was brilliant, and the writing on the character is maybe the best non-comic version of him period. the story was MUCH better than the comic version as it wasn't held down by all the crisis elements ( no superboy time punch ) the nimation and chracter designs are pretty good (i beleive this is the same crew that'll be doing the young justice show.) every vehicle in this looks and moves odd (with the exceptions of the batbike and batplane) the score is ok but nothing to write home about. overall i say get it, but don't expect it to be another MOTP or ROTJ, it's no where near those two but it is one of the better dtv's to date and pretty fun.

I'm looking forward to this as much as everyone else, but I can't see any Batman movie animated or live action rivaling Mask of the Phantasm anytime soon.

Nice clip, Jon, can't wait to see the film. I wish Batman would get adult series on HBO

Just watched it, and all I can say is: wow! It must've been because I wasn't expecting much from the voice cast but I must say they were all brilliant, especially DiMaggio (Joker), Williams (Mask), and Ackles (Red Hood).

The interrogation scene with Batman, Nightwing and Joker gave me chills. DiMaggio really gave that evil, no joy, psychotic Joker that reminded me of Hamill from BB: ROTJ, and Heath in TDK. Him beating Jason to a pulp at the beginning was just as chilling. Williams was both awesome and amusing as Mask, I especially loved his scene in intimidating his new associate. lol. Ackles was great in delivering Jason's pain and rage in the final confrontation with him, Bats and Joker. Very emotional stuff.
Just as good if not better than Mask of the Phantasm imo.

I just watched it and i agree with you. It was fantastic!

- The story was amazing, handled even better than the comic. Btw, the Joker beating up Jason made me sick to my stomach! Wow!

- The designs were great too. Probably the best Batman design, but not so great Bruce. However, I didnt really like how the Joker looked old, and how Dick didnt have a mullet.

- The music was a bit contributing factor to the quality of the scenes, be it action or drama.

- The voice acting was top notch as well. I have to commend Ackles for his voice acting. He was a perfect fit for Red Hood, and brought all the emotion and angst to the role. He stole the show. I wasnt too fond of the Joker though. Sometimes he sounded great, but most of the time he sounded and looked old. He was like Nicholson's...

- The animation was stellar. From the exciting Batwing chase scene, to the beautifully choreographed fight scenes.

To sum it all up, this was the perfect adaptation of one of Batman's most tragic stories, the story of his biggest failure. Seeing it come to life on screen, and even surpassing the comic was a great treat. I can only hope they keep adapting more "big" Batman stories with just as amazing results. Giving other superheroes a chance wouldnt be bad though. I guess they arent as profitable as Batman. Lets see what happens to GL after the live action movie.

Watched it. My initial thoughts...

AWESOME!!!

Love child of Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker w/ more parallels from the former just w/out the romance.

Might not surpass Mask of the Phantasm but it is EQUALLY as good, IMO.

TOP NOTCH Animation and voice performances. They all sound great! You thought the animation in WW, GL FF and JL Crisis is awesome?! Wait 'till you get a load of this bad boy!

Met my expectations and more! LOVED the ending it was an improvement to the comic as well as the rest of 'em, its BETTER than the comic!

This is a dream come true for me 'coz what was under-rated, and i personally LOVED, is now a top notch DCU animated original film! Great to see it got its full potential, I'm so proud for this story, many thanks Mr. Winick! :')

This is BTAS in modern form w/ a mix of the chris nolan batman films and a hint of the 60's TV show.

My blu-ray copy finally arrived today, and myself and a friend, who's also a Batman fan, watched it together, and it was AWESOME!!!!! I'm a huge fan of the comic book story, Under the Hood, and this movie adaptation met every one of my expectations and more.

The story was filled with emotion, particularly the flashback parts. The action was top notch, and the violence was particularly brutal. Man oh man, how I loved the scene where Joker beats Jason with the crowbar. That iconic scene from a death in the family brought alive on screen. Looooooved it.

There was too many great scenes for me to pick a favorite. The whole movie was just outstanding. Loved the animation. The characters looked great. Gotham City looked great. Ra's Al Ghul's lair looked terrific. I loved the design for the Batmobile, too.

The voice cast were all top notch. There was not a bad performance from anyone. Special shout outs to Greenwood as Batman, and Ackles as Jason, but a particularly big shout out to DiMaggio for delivering a brilliant unique and menacing take on the Joker. He surprised me with how good he was. I loved him.

Overall I give this movie a 9.5/10. It's almost perfect for me, and I love it just as much if not more than MOTP and Return of the Joker.

Btw, the special features were great. Haven't watched them all yet, but the featurettes about Jason, and Dick Grayson were cool.

This was the best DC animation film for me. Even better than Wonder Woman & MOTP

I enjoyed it. Only minor problems I had was at the beginning with Robin getting beat to death and blown up but still having a perfect costume. If they cant do bloddy, then atleast rip the costume up a bit. And every now and then, they made bat/red hood a little to strong.

This was amazing. This has surpassed Wonder Woman as the best DCU animated movie for me. I don't want to go into too much detail but this was stellar. Bravo to Bruce Timm and the rest of the staff.

They made a borderline mediocre story from the comics to an amazing animated telling of that story. It surpassed the comic in pretty much every way.

How the **** have so many of you seen this already?!

I agree with that. Robin was blown up but he was left intact. Then at the end, Batman saved Jason and the Joker was blown up but he survived?
Are there two threads for this?
There are?

Ironic isn't it? Because i believe that was the point, i felt from that point on the story ended in full circle from jason's death to joker's survival and wrapped up pretty nicely w/ a subtle happy and sad-to-think of it memory w/ jason's debut as robin.
