DC Animated - Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

yeah i really like it too. surprised people don't like the animation style. it reminds me of the 80's cartoons with the defined muscles. it really resembles the counterpart comic book, so i'm glad they went this route instead of setting the story in a DCAU classic animation style. same with new frontier.

Great clip, only 2 weeks remaining!! I hope they continue with Batman/Superman animated movies.

I think the issue with the animation that some seem to be describing as "off" is that when you look at EM's original work, there's a thickness to the line, a roundness to the characters, and just an overall sort of cartoony aesthetic (I would almost describe it as like a more muscled and mature "superhero squad" type look) to his style that seems to have been mishandled during the translation to animation. The absence of these elements leaves everything very empty to a degree, especially since the art of the story this was based on had such a distinctive visual flavor to it that we can so readily compare the 2 images in our heads. Whereas EM drew a superman that was bulging with muscle, those same mucles have an awkwardly carved look to them here. On the whole, the characters seem to have lost a bit of the mass they had in the book, and become more angular and rigid as well. The scenes don't feel as fluid as they could and maybe should feel as a result of it. That thickness of line from the original art that isn't here also gives everything a sort of lack of weight.

I agree that the use of CGI in the scenes we've seen isn't very appealing. I found the ship crashing and other elements of the recent green lantern DTV to be decent and undistracting, but here, everything is so geometric and simple when that car pulls up, it is an eyesore.

Another thing I noticed is the color pallete seems to lack a certain depth and richness that would make the scenes pop. It seems like someone's got the brightness turned up a couple notches too high. Superman Doomsday, Gotham Knight, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, they all had very vibrant and alive color palletes. This feels somewhat washed out, again, contradicting the very vibrant and popping colors from the book. I don't know, maybe not to the degree it sounds like I am talking about, but something is missing. It feels like it could be a bit darker color-wise. Darker may not be the right word though...

Well they cut the Nightwing stuff as expected. Oh well. Im buying it anyway, it seems awesome.

Sometimes, just sometimes, the people at WB can do ******ed things. They cut out one of the best parts of the story :down

its a very very VERY short dialogue scene that's not even integral to the story....they show up, try to yell at Lex, and promptly get knocked out

The reviewer states it's the shortest DCUOAM movie with only 67 minutes, so it is true after all. Nevertheless it'll be great, no doubt about that :word:

It was not necessary to the story in any way... and considering the running time of these movies, we definitely won't be missing much.

WB, Stan Berkowitz and Bruce Timm were very smart in this case.

So the one scene where we see that Superman and Batman utilise their own teams to launch a direct assault on the Whitehouse is just excess?

This movie does not have to be just over an hour, that's a ridiculously short length for a supposed 'movie'. It wouldn't have hurt to leave it in to show the audience just exactly what their teammates were up to.

in terms of the movie....yes...even in the book, its extremely brief....WB only gives DC so much money to produce these things and that only allows the runtime to be what it is

To be honest the book flies by so I understand if the movie is short but dvd makes this a buy, they give you six cartoons, a 20 minute documentary, and 1 hour long discussion between Tim, Andrea, and Kevin Conroy. I would the dvd itself without movie.

This is a Superman/ Batman team-up movie... not The Batman/Superman Family.

I'm following the two main characters... nobody else.

And these movies have a budget which allows for 75 minutes of animation... simple as that.

Saw "Public Enemies" and it is awesome. The best DC animation since JLU ended. Brought me back to The New Batman/Superman Adventures. Thought it was funny that the movie had 3 perfectly even acts. You could perfectly divide the movie up into 3 episodes, with the cliffhangers for parts 1 and 2 happening at the 20 and 40 minute mark.

The voice acting was great, the animation was stellar (especially considering the detailed designs) and the music complemented the movie nicely. I think the movie is actually significantly better than the book.

Also, the screenshots don't do the translation of Ed McGuinness' work justice. In motion, it is very evocative of his work. Great job all around.

How did you see the film?

From the clips and the pics I have seen, "Public Enemies" has the best animated Superman design wise since the 40's Fleischer Superman cartoons.
