DC bringing back "The Titans"

I was wondering how long you'd last, longer than most of your lady friends said you would :p

The Titans #1
Well, we basically know by now that at least Winick is pretty equal opportunity when it comes to his exploitation. If you're gonna have Starfire get attacked naked by Spikey the Super Phallus, it's only fair for Wally to also get molested in the shower by...lasagna. It's just not a good week for the redheads.

I actually...sort of enjoyed the issue. As in Green Arrow & Black Canary, I actually think Winick is actually doing fairly well, actually, in avoiding the tropes that he's dug himself into being known for. You know the ones: GAY AIDS GAY AIDS GAY AIDS GAY gay. Characterizations are pretty clear; though I may not agree with every single one, I do feel that Winick is taking pains to not nerf anyone in his cast. So it's all starting off on an positive note.

But I also wonder -- as with GA&BC as well -- why in Blue Blazes did the road here have to be so painful?? I mean, look, this was for all intents and purposes an introductory issue. Not even that, but really a prologue. Its whole point was in setting up the setup of this series. So then...what was the point of that horrible Titans East issue? That gadawful waste of my life which ended up doing nothing but poking mean-spirited fun at some C-listers. We didn't need that sht at all, this issue could have gone pretty much exactly the way it went without a single acknowledgment of it. And yet that sht still came, did its thing; the fact that there was so much doubt directed at this series (and at Winick's recent skills in general, it has to be said) was due very heavily to that special.

Same with GA&BC. Recent issues have been genuinely charming and even funny in ways that remind me of earlier Winick work...so why did it have to start off with such a low note? With that crock of a marriage special that Winick admitted was supposed to be so over the top you don't take it seriously at all, leading to some pointless Shamazons nonsense, and finally into the  that was Cloud Sniper. Why do we have to plow through such things in order to get to the good stuff? Why can't Winick just write acceptable material right off the bat?

And so, even though I had virtually no problems at all with this issue, I just can't help but feel trepidation for this series as a whole. Winick's own inconsistency as a writer forces me to.

I just find it funny that Red Arrow and Green Lantern have the same mask designs; instead of the standard domino mask, or G.L. mask....the penciller based it solely from Nightwing-as all three have the same mask designs albeit; different color and slight modification.(Red Arrow not as pronounced as Nightwings but still to close to be a coincidence and G.L. more along the lines of his first mask-but still Nightwing based)

I guess we all know who is the number one Titan in the series again:

yup, Nightwing!

And Starfire is just an alien version of Britney Spears....she was hot back in the day but now she's just a ho (wonder if she'll 'starbolt' Buddy's son to manhood.) I just hope this incarnation of the Titans warrents some quality villains like Trigon and other forces of that calibre. If its just going to be using the same villains over and over again...with the same formula; without any kind of ground breaking story arcs then as much of a fan I am of the Titans; I would drop it since I wouldn't be getting my money's worth. I'm skeptical so far.

I hope 2008 will emphasize the concept of need for unity and family but not in a 60s or 80s kind of way....it's past the millenium now....so what's this years version of unity and family with a family like the titans.

I believe that is the responsibility of a foul, vicious supervillain. They call him "Editorial Mandate."

Actually that GL mask is the same one Kyle's been wearing since the Sinestro Corps War.

I'm not a fan on Nightwing having Huntress's mask. Look at the panel of him flying out the window. It's not even attached to his face.

On a mildly related note:
Anyone else excited on the upgrade of Nightwings tech level?

No. Did he learn Excel 2007 or something?

No, He has something better to get around in than the nightcycle, he flies now using Steel-tech and has something like ten Night-caves/roosts/whatever in his city of choice all stocked with tech.

I thought it was Batman who had a bunch of hideouts all over that he just let the others use.

Batman has Gotham hideouts.
Dick has NYC hideouts.
Robin has Bludhav...err... Gotham hideouts.

Well, technically Batman has all the hideouts; Dick and Tim don't exactly have jobs that can pay for super-secret lairs.

Batman is the 'Daddy'.....so Dick and Tim are pretty much moochin off the big bat.

Still say Nightwing's Mr. Titan in every incarnation of the Titans; pretty much Martian Manhunter is Mr. JLA; and Flash (Jay Garrick) is Mr. JSA.

Why, yes. Mr. JSA is the new nickname of my wang.

 I don't think he flies. Otherwise what was the point of the "slide down the side of the building with a batarang, grab flag, land gracefully" thing?

I liked the one panel that showed Cyborg in it. that drawing looked pretty cool.

Not a bad first issue. Ill prolly continue reading at this point
