I can see late '80s James Spader doing really well as either Riddler or Joker, both motivated by egotism and self-righteousness and really reacting against the status quo system though respectively a lot more and less reserved.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN ( 1989)
Director : Cameron Crowe
Screenplay : Cameron Crowe
Producers: Alexander and Ilya Salkind
Music : Jerry Goldsmith
View attachment 119438View attachment 119446
Project History
Following the mixed but successful Superman 3, Christopher Reeve and the rest of the Donner era Superman cast decide to call it a day and bow out of the series.
Reeves departure from the role sends shock waves through Hollywood and leaves Warner Brothers and The Salkinds in a bind .
While the 3rd film isn't as successful or well received as the first two , the series is still a potential money maker.
Without their lead and without Kidder and Hackman unwilling to return, the series is in trouble.
While several plans for a proposed Superman 4 are considered, it's ultimately decided, that the best course of action, is to reboot the series
with a new cast , and a new attitude.
Taking inspiration from the recent John Bryne run, Superman would be in his twenties, The Kents would be alive , and Lois wouldn't know his true identity.
Lex Luthor, Zod, and Jor El would be absent from the film , as not to draw comparisons between the first two films.
Instead , the film would be about a rookie Superman taking on Brainiac, who gains control of the great powers nuclear codes , and bring the world to the brink of nuclear war.
The film would also introduce General Sam Lane as an advisor to the President Of The United States.
With The Salkinds and WB execs wanting to appeal to the hipper, MTV Generation , they look to filmmakers such as John Hughes, David Lynch, and Joel Schumacher,
to direct a new fresh take on the Man Of Steel.
Ultimately, writer and director Cameron Crowe takes on the directing and screenplay duties .
Crowe brings a humor and emotional grounding to the characters , with Lois Lane, and Clark Kent, at the center of the otherwise, grand scale story.

The plan is to focus on a much younger, rookie Batman in addition to a younger rogues gallery.
Gotham Nights , shoots in Manhattan and Los Angeles in 1988 for a 1989 release date.
Story
Like St. Elmos Fire, the story centers on a group of 20 something friends, who begin to grow apart , and how their separate paths lead them to moral quandaries and to very different destiny's.
In this case , Schumacher uses youthful versions of Batman and his rogues gallery, as the subjects of these journeys.

Harvey is the ambitious and idealistic young Assistant District Attorney with higher politcal ambitions, however, his charm and charisma hide his darker side .
Ed is a day trader on the Gotham Stock exchange , while engaging in stakes gambling and insider trading.
Oswald is a social climber by day but is secretly becoming a crime kingpin , taking out the other mob bosses and engaging in the drug trade as The Penguin.
While The Joker, an outside unknown to Bruce's social circle , represents an agent of chaos, ready to end the big party and to end the 80s with bang as he targets Gotham's elite .
In this telling, Joker represents the forgotten citizens of Gotham who wreak the vengeance, no longer willing to be ignored .

THE MAN OF STEEL ( 1992)
Director : John McTiernan
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza
Music : John Williams
View attachment 131834
Project History
With Batman a huge box office sensation, and the rights to Superman away from The Salkinds , Warner Brothers feels confident enough to develop a 5th Superman film.
While Donner is approached to return to the franchise , the director resists given his firing, and his desire to work on other projects .
Instead , The Hunt For Red October director John McTiernan is brought on for an action packed thriller .
The Man Of Steel , is set to be released the Winter of 1992, following the Summer Release of Batman Returns.
Story
While Brainiac is considered the obvious choice for the film's villain , Director John McTiernan and Producer Jon Peters , want a more grounded a gritty action thriller along the lines of Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October.
The new story pits Man Of Steel against seven of Iron Heights escaped inmates, whom are led by the sadistic ,Bruno Mannheim , and the only man who knows their devious plan, is Superman's greatest enemy, Lex Luthor.
Luthor would end up making a deal with the authorities, in exchange for aiding in the capture of the escaped convicts , and would be trusted to Superman's custody, reminiscent of films like, 48 Hours .
Lois Lane would play a much more prominent role, as The Editor In Chief of The Daily Planet , while Perry would be retired , though hating retirement in a running gag.
In another dramatic change, she would also be Clark's girlfriend and partner ,fully aware he is Superman and jettisoning the memory wipes from Superman 4.
However, in public , Clark and Lois play up their brother and sister dynamic , while secretly, the two are in a relationship , unbeknownst to everyone else in The Daily Planet.
The film's main villain, Manheim , would lead the Dirty Dozen style team of criminals who have clashing egos, short tempers, and off beat personalities .
Yet , the villains unite in a single goal which threatens Metropolis .
Casting
Once again, Reeve, Hackman, and Kidder all return to their iconic roles 4 years after
Superman 4 : The Quest For Peace.
For the role of the manic and sadistic Bruno Manheim , McTiernan casts Dennis Hopper, whose career had made a comeback in recent years .
Character actor Fred Ward is cast as DC Comics fan favorite Deadshot , while the rest of the Iron Heights inmates are made up of characters actors from the 80s and 90s.

THE PRIVATE LIFE OF BRUCE WAYNE ( 2004)
Director : Curtis Hanson
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Andrew Kevin Walker
Music : Michael Giacchino
View attachment 133102
Project History
By the early 2000s, with various Batman scripts going nowhere , Andrew Kevin Walker delivers a script titled The Private Life Of Bruce Wayne , which would serve as a Noir style murder mystery with Bruce Wayne / Batman at the center of the story.
Unlike The Burton and Schumacher films, the new film would truly try to examine the pathos of Bruce Wayne , without the flashy all star villains stealing the spotlight.
The film could be produced on a lower budget than the previous entries , and wouldn't have to rely huge explosions and giant set pieces.
The studio is intrigued with the idea , and Producer Jon Peters wants a hot dramatic director to take on the project.
Curtis Hanson , director of LA Confidential, ends up helming the project with a Summer 2004 release date.
Script
Taking inspiration from Billy Wilder's The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, the film plans to introduce the audience to Bruce Wayne through his past relationships , and how they craft the man we meet , and how his Batman persona serves as a barrier preventing any one woman from derailing his crusade.
Given the subject matter, continuity issues , trying to fit the story into the continuity of The Burton Schumacher film's would be problematic, at best.
This needed to be a Bruce Wayne in his mid to late 30s , who was in his prime, and had several relationships , and a very much alive, rogues gallery.
Also absent in the story are Robin and Batgirl , with this version of Batman , working solo .
Thus , the film would be a reboot , with an already established Batman , who inhabits a retro, 1930s through 1950s, style Gotham ,similar to BTAS .
The film would be a detective story , much like Hanson's LA Confidential , and would feature a voice over by Batman himself .
As the past love of Bruce Wayne are being targeted, and the Millionaire himself is the prime suspect , The Batman can't tell if the goal is to take down Bruce Wayne or to take down The Batman.
With his rogues largely incarcerated , the suspects aren't obvious , and as Batman revisits his past relationships , the audiences takes an emotional journey into what makes Bruce Wayne tick.
The film is crafted as a one shot, with the door open to sequels should it serve as the foundation for a franchise.

I really need to watch more of the old Wonder Woman TV series (pity it's gone from HBO Max). Y'know, that one-off TV villain with the potential for a triumphant return on the big screen?
