DC ELSEWORLDS: Reimagining Keaton Sequels & DC Films that Never Were

I can see late '80s James Spader doing really well as either Riddler or Joker, both motivated by egotism and self-righteousness and really reacting against the status quo system though respectively a lot more and less reserved.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN ( 1989)
Director : Cameron Crowe
Screenplay : Cameron Crowe
Producers: Alexander and Ilya Salkind
Music : Jerry Goldsmith
View attachment 119438View attachment 119446

Project History
Following the mixed but successful Superman 3, Christopher Reeve and the rest of the Donner era Superman cast decide to call it a day and bow out of the series.
Reeves departure from the role sends shock waves through Hollywood and leaves Warner Brothers and The Salkinds in a bind .
While the 3rd film isn't as successful or well received as the first two , the series is still a potential money maker.

Without their lead and without Kidder and Hackman unwilling to return, the series is in trouble.

While several plans for a proposed Superman 4 are considered, it's ultimately decided, that the best course of action, is to reboot the series
with a new cast , and a new attitude.

Taking inspiration from the recent John Bryne run, Superman would be in his twenties, The Kents would be alive , and Lois wouldn't know his true identity.
Lex Luthor, Zod, and Jor El would be absent from the film , as not to draw comparisons between the first two films.

Instead , the film would be about a rookie Superman taking on Brainiac, who gains control of the great powers nuclear codes , and bring the world to the brink of nuclear war.
The film would also introduce General Sam Lane as an advisor to the President Of The United States.

With The Salkinds and WB execs wanting to appeal to the hipper, MTV Generation , they look to filmmakers such as John Hughes, David Lynch, and Joel Schumacher,
to direct a new fresh take on the Man Of Steel.

Ultimately, writer and director Cameron Crowe takes on the directing and screenplay duties .
Crowe brings a humor and emotional grounding to the characters , with Lois Lane, and Clark Kent, at the center of the otherwise, grand scale story.

View attachment 132014

Project History
In the aftermath of the success of St. Elmos Fire and The Lost Boys, Warner Brothers turns to director Joel Schumacher to bring Batman to the big screen.

With Schumacher on board the original scripts are tossed out in favor of a whole new story
penned by The Lost Boys scribes Janice Fischer and James Jeremias

The plan is to focus on a much younger, rookie Batman in addition to a younger rogues gallery.

Gotham Nights , shoots in Manhattan and Los Angeles in 1988 for a 1989 release date.

Story
Like St. Elmos Fire, the story centers on a group of 20 something friends, who begin to grow apart , and how their separate paths lead them to moral quandaries and to very different destiny's.

In this case , Schumacher uses youthful versions of Batman and his rogues gallery, as the subjects of these journeys.

The film takes a look at the excess and glam of the 1980s yuppie, wealthy , elites , contrasted with the dark underbelly of excess and the economic struggles of those less fortunate.

In this telling , each of Bruce's friends respond to the lives they've inherited in drastic ways.

Bruce plays the part of the yuppie to the press and the his circle of friends, but stalks the night fighting criminals , and helping the down trodden of society.

Selina plays the part of the party heiress, while at night roams the street , robbing gallery's , penthouses, and jewel stores, for the thrill of it , as The Catwoman.

Harvey is the ambitious and idealistic young Assistant District Attorney with higher politcal ambitions, however, his charm and charisma hide his darker side .

Ed is a day trader on the Gotham Stock exchange , while engaging in stakes gambling and insider trading.

Oswald is a social climber by day but is secretly becoming a crime kingpin , taking out the other mob bosses and engaging in the drug trade as The Penguin.

While The Joker, an outside unknown to Bruce's social circle , represents an agent of chaos, ready to end the big party and to end the 80s with bang as he targets Gotham's elite .

In this telling, Joker represents the forgotten citizens of Gotham who wreak the vengeance, no longer willing to be ignored .

THE MAN OF STEEL ( 1992)
Director : John McTiernan
Producer : Jon Peters
Screenplay : Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza
Music : John Williams

View attachment 131834

Project History
With Batman a huge box office sensation, and the rights to Superman away from The Salkinds , Warner Brothers feels confident enough to develop a 5th Superman film.

While Donner is approached to return to the franchise , the director resists given his firing, and his desire to work on other projects .

Instead , The Hunt For Red October director John McTiernan is brought on for an action packed thriller .
The Man Of Steel , is set to be released the Winter of 1992, following the Summer Release of Batman Returns.

Story
While Brainiac is considered the obvious choice for the film's villain , Director John McTiernan and Producer Jon Peters , want a more grounded a gritty action thriller along the lines of Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October.

The new story pits Man Of Steel against seven of Iron Heights escaped inmates, whom are led by the sadistic ,Bruno Mannheim , and the only man who knows their devious plan, is Superman's greatest enemy, Lex Luthor.
Luthor would end up making a deal with the authorities, in exchange for aiding in the capture of the escaped convicts , and would be trusted to Superman's custody, reminiscent of films like,
48 Hours .

Lois Lane would play a much more prominent role, as The Editor In Chief of The Daily Planet , while Perry would be retired , though hating retirement in a running gag.

In another dramatic change, she would also be Clark's girlfriend and partner ,fully aware he is Superman and jettisoning the memory wipes from Superman 4.
However, in public , Clark and Lois play up their brother and sister dynamic , while secretly, the two are in a relationship , unbeknownst to everyone else in The Daily Planet.
The film's main villain, Manheim , would lead the Dirty Dozen style team of criminals who have clashing egos, short tempers, and off beat personalities .
Yet , the villains unite in a single goal which threatens Metropolis .

Casting
Once again, Reeve, Hackman, and Kidder all return to their iconic roles 4 years after
Superman 4 : The Quest For Peace.
For the role of the manic and sadistic Bruno Manheim , McTiernan casts Dennis Hopper, whose career had made a comeback in recent years .
Character actor Fred Ward is cast as DC Comics fan favorite Deadshot , while the rest of the Iron Heights inmates are made up of characters actors from the 80s and 90s.

SUPERMAN REBORN ( 1994)
Director : Ron Howard
Screenplay : Alvin Sargent and Tom Benedek
Producer : Jon Peters
Executive Producer : Brian Glazer
Music : John Williams

1746499000386.png

Project History
After the smash success of The Man Of Steel, development moves quickly a film adapting the recent and controversial Death Of Superman and Reign Of Supermen comic .

While The Man Of Steel is an action packed thriller, Superman Reborn , would be more of a drama with action set pieces .

A new type of director would be needed not only to balance the film's FX's heavy action, but also the deep emotional and poignant scenes .

While directors like Rob Reiner and Robert Zemeckis are courted by Producer Jon Peters, Ron Howard agrees bring the emotional story to the big screen, much to the approval of Christopher Reeve.

Pre-production for the film would begin in within weeks of the release of The Man Of Steel, with filming spanning from 1993 through 1994, for a Winter 1994 release date .

Story
The script would follow the Death Of Superman and Reign Of Superman storylines closely, though , Brainiac would be the film's central villain , with Doomsday being a captured creature whom Brainiac releases .

After Superman is vanquished, and as the world mourns , 4 mysterious figures would emerge, each claiming the mantle of Superman .

In a shift from the comics, it would be Lois , along with, Superboy, and Steel , who take Superman to the fortress and use it's properties to revive Superman after a long absence.

However, Eradicator and Cyborg Superman both become corrupted by Brainiac's programing and become his minions in his dominion over Earth.

The real Superman would return to stop Brainiac's invasion of Earth and re-establish himself as Earth's protector .

On the human level, the film would give Editor and Chief Lois Lane , the emotional dilemma of mourning her fiancée, while trying to remain objective .

While the film wouldn't feature characters such as The JLA , the film would feature Supergirl and Lana Lang in a cameo appearances .

While the idea of Michael Keaton's Batman appearing in a cameo is briefly considered , Ron Howard and Christopher Reeve put the kibosh on the idea .

They want the focus to be related to Superman , and at the same time , with Keaton's future as Batman uncertain without Burton, the idea of a new Batman, thrown in for cameo's sake ,feels forced.

Lex Luthor is also absent from the film.

Given the characters focus in the last film, and the variety of new characters in Superman Reborn, it Luthor seemingly has no fit for this version of the comics adaptation.

The film would be nearly three hours long, and as plays like a disaster drama , of a bygone era.

Casting
Alan Rickman would join the Superman film as the film's main villain Brainiac , with Ed Harris and Julian Sands as Cyborg and The Eradicator , respectively.

Character actor Ving Rhames would take on the mantle of Steel, while up and coming actor , Scott Wolf, would take on the role of Superboy.

Helen Slater and Annette O'Toole both agree to reprise their roles as Supergirl and Lana Lang for brief appearances in the film.

Veteran actor George Kennedy also plays a supporting role as The Secretary Of Defense , Sam Lane, while Alan Arkin plays Emil Hamilton.

Filling the Doomsday costume is Ralf Moeller.

The rest of Man Of Steel's supporting cast , also return .

It would be a little odd to have Brainiac, Eradicator and Cyborg all competing for electrical-technical-robotic villainy, and I think I would prefer Rickman as Eradicator, but Harris and Rickman would have really interesting parallels with Reeve, much colder than him and yet similar enough, also plausible as new, alternate-y versions, I think also real interesting to see a Rickman Eradicator growing milder and more sympathetic, more compatible with real Superman and Harris Cyborg growing more overtly bad and demented.

GOTHAM KNIGHTS PART III ( 1993 )
Director : Joel Schumacher
1746579911462.jpeg1746580067198.jpeg

Story
The third film is Schumacher's trilogy would find Bruce in full conflict with his former friends , just as he is pulled toward new friends in Vicki Vale and his surrogate kid Brother , Robin,

As The Batman , he battles a Scarred and discredited Harvey Dent seeking revenge on The Penguin, and he battles The Catwoman, a former lover , now turned foe .

All the while as Bruce Wayne , he becomes a champion of the poor , leaving behind his wild night life and parties of the 80s.

As reporter and activist Vicki Vale encourages Bruce's journey, a young street kid takes on the mantle as Robin , inspired by both Batman's heroism , yet representing those youth harmed by the depression and frustrated by the establishment.

Unlike Joker and The Riddler, Robin hopes to be positive force for change, and inspired by Robin Hood, he takes on the powerful and corrupt of Gotham's elite and gives to those less fortunate.

For Harvey's part, his political career is over after being humiliated in his affair with Ivy , and after a failed assassination attempted by his old friend Oswald, he's transformed into Two Face.

As Harvey's dark nature takes over he seeks to destroy his friends , whom he feels, betrayed him : Bruce, Selina, and Oswald.

Oswald , meanwhile, has become the untouchable , and undisputed, king of Gotham, with his own political ambitions , and see's both Batman, and Bruce Wayne, as obstacles to his rise to power.

At the same time, as Bruce begins to drift towards Vicki, the rift between Selina and Bruce , turns into all out conflict , in addition to being on opposite sides of the law.

Schumacher wants to trace Bruce's journey to becoming The Definitive Batman who has a ward , who is the humanitarian, and who has a rogues gallery .

So , the third film is seen as the story which establishes the status quo which the General Audience is familiar with .

Vicki Vale : Bridget Fonda
While she was originally considered for the role of Ivy, Schumacher feels the actress is fits the role of Vicki Vale , and serves as an interest contrast to Jennifer Beal .

While Beal's exotic looks and dynamic presence make her perfect for Catwoman,
Fonda's innocent , girl next door persona , make her fitting as a stabilizing force and potential mate for Bruce.

1746579128718.jpeg
Robin / Dick Grayson : Stephen Dorff

Though several young actors such as Ethan Hawke and Christian Slater are considered,
the 19 year old Stephen Dorff is chosen as the idealistic crusader and advocate .

In contrast to the dark Nelson, Dorff presents as the much more naive, and optimistic image, of Robin .

While Burton expresses interest in a Batman 3, WB is wary of another dark return to his Gotham City .

While WB would like to develop a Wonder Woman film, no script is in the offing.

And , while WB would like to due a Flash movie, The failure of the TV series makes them wary.

Eventually, producer Jon Peters, suggests that Warner Brothers produce a Justice League film, that would rejuvenate the fading franchises .

The idea is a radical , and risky one .

If the film falters , it risks the big screen future of each JLA member .

However, WB see's a JLA film as a more attractive option, than individual solo films.

Should the film succeed, the plan is to spin off each of the characters into their own solo films.

Director Martin Campbell , is tasked with launching a united, DC universe with Justice League , for a Summer 1994 release date.

Story
When the creature Brainiac launches an all out invasion of Earth,
it's greatest heroes must unite against the world's greatest threat .

The Cast

1746673039650.png

1746673692190.png

Wonder Woman / Diana Prince : Lynda Carter
14 years after her last spin as Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter agrees to reprise her role for big screen debut .

Green Lantern / John Stewart : Michael Biehn
The Terminator actor becomes the first to play The Green Lantern, and like Lundgren,
is also signed to a three picture deal .

1746673441531.png
The Flash / Barry Allen : John Wesley Shipp
Campbell decides to stick with Shipp as the Flash given his popular performance as Barry Allen.
Additionally he likes his chemistry and contrast with Keaton and Reeve.

Lois Lane : Margot Kidder
Alfred Pennyworth : Michael Gough

It's understandable that WB has wanted to keep TV and movie versions of superhero characters really separate (though weird that they still try to make both versions but just by happenstance usually don't, can't make and have both at the same time) but it would be interesting if there was more crossover between versions.

SUPERMAN : PART III ( 1983)
Director : Nicholas Meyer
Producer : IIya and Alexander Salkind
Screenplay : Nicholas Meyer and Tom Mankiewicz
1746990158461.png

Project History
After The Success Of Superman II, a third Superman film seems evitable .

Though Richard Lester is the immediate go to , The Salkind's decide they want Star Trek II : The Wrath Of Khan director , Nicholas Meyer , to helm the next film instead.

Meyer agrees works with Tom Mankiewicz , to craft the screenplay .

Script
Though earlier scriptments and ideas call for the inclusion of Brainiac, Mr. Mtyzlpix, Lana Lang, and Supergirl, Meyer and Mankiewicz Brainstorm on a much more grounded script .

The writers want to deal with what the real world fallout of Zod's takeover and Lois's mindwipe , would be on Superman and Clark Kent .

Taking the idea of autonomous computers, cyborgs ,and technology , they chose The villain Metallo , who is also a romantic rival to Superman.

They also introduce Sam Lane, who's elected President, on a platform of restoring global security , after Superman's delayed response to Zod .

Despite having saved his daughter, Sam Lane as seeing Superman as more of a threat to Lois , and in his mind, constantly puts her in danger .
And that's aside from Lane's wariness of an unchecked, and invincible, Superman.

At the same time, Morgan Edge , is introduced as the ambitious yuppie, and the new anti Superman owner of The Daily Planet , who wants to push the paper towards a much more critical stance on The Man Of Steel.

Meyer and Mankiewicz want to show how Superman's good intentions , in the previous film , can also have their own costs .

Now , Superman and Clark Kent , face opponents questioning his judgement.

While Superman is at odds with the " New Man Of Steel" Metallo, Clark Kent faces pushback from his boss Morgan Edge, who feels that he and Lois are too biased and soft on Superman.

The script would include in a smaller role Milton Fine, who creates the Metallo program , leaving the door open to Brainiac in a sequel.

Story
Though Earth is safe, The Man Of Steel must faces the fallout from the events of Superman 2.

Zod's takeover and Superman's absence , causes The newly elected President, Sam Lane , to authorize a Kryptonian Failsafe program , called Metallo .

When Lois Lane's ex fiancée, John Corbin, is recruited for the program, Superman, for the first time, has a romantic rival in the dashing Corbin, who wants to rekindle his relationship with The President's Daughter.

Now, as Lois makes the effort to move on from Superman , Clark Kent finds himself as the odd man out .

But as her new lover becomes corrupted by power he poses , he soon proves the axiom, absolute power, corrupts absolutely.

Now , Superman must face not only Lois's Boyfriend but her domineering Father, The President Of The United States .

Casting

SAM LANE
For The role of Sam Lane, Meyer wants a distinguished veteran actor with command and presence , who could believable stand toe to toe with Superman.
Though Gregory Peck , George Kennedy, and George C Scott are all considered , Charlton Heston agrees to play Lois Lane's father.

METALLO/ JOHN CORBIN
For the dashing, charismatic , and dangerous Metallo, several of Hollywood's popular leading men are considered .

Names like Richard Gere, Tom Berenger, Michael Nori, and Christopher Walken are thrown around,
But Meyer goes to character actor Chris Sarandon.

Meyer feels that Chris Sarandon is one of the few actors who are not only physically imposing enough, but have the charm and charisma to actually be considered a romantic threat to the equally charming Christopher Reeve .

MORGAN EDGE
Character actor Ron Silver takes the part of Morgan Edge who serves as an opponent in Clark Kent's work life , and huge supported of President Sam Lane .

MILTON FINE
For the role of Milton Fine , John Wood of War Games and Nichol Williamson of Excalibur are considered, but ultimately, The Omen, Time After Time, and Tron actor , David Warner is cast .

By the early 2000s, with various Batman scripts going nowhere , Andrew Kevin Walker delivers a script titled The Private Life Of Bruce Wayne , which would serve as a Noir style murder mystery with Bruce Wayne / Batman at the center of the story.

Unlike The Burton and Schumacher films, the new film would truly try to examine the pathos of Bruce Wayne , without the flashy all star villains stealing the spotlight.

The film could be produced on a lower budget than the previous entries , and wouldn't have to rely huge explosions and giant set pieces.

The studio is intrigued with the idea , and Producer Jon Peters wants a hot dramatic director to take on the project.

Curtis Hanson , director of LA Confidential, ends up helming the project with a Summer 2004 release date.

Script

Taking inspiration from Billy Wilder's The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, the film plans to introduce the audience to Bruce Wayne through his past relationships , and how they craft the man we meet , and how his Batman persona serves as a barrier preventing any one woman from derailing his crusade.

Given the subject matter, continuity issues , trying to fit the story into the continuity of The Burton Schumacher film's would be problematic, at best.

This needed to be a Bruce Wayne in his mid to late 30s , who was in his prime, and had several relationships , and a very much alive, rogues gallery.
Also absent in the story are Robin and Batgirl , with this version of Batman , working solo .

Thus , the film would be a reboot , with an already established Batman , who inhabits a retro, 1930s through 1950s, style Gotham ,similar to BTAS .
The film would be a detective story , much like Hanson's LA Confidential , and would feature a voice over by Batman himself .

As the past love of Bruce Wayne are being targeted, and the Millionaire himself is the prime suspect , The Batman can't tell if the goal is to take down Bruce Wayne or to take down The Batman.

With his rogues largely incarcerated , the suspects aren't obvious , and as Batman revisits his past relationships , the audiences takes an emotional journey into what makes Bruce Wayne tick.

The film is crafted as a one shot, with the door open to sequels should it serve as the foundation for a franchise.

SUPERGIRL : WOMAN OF TOMORROW ( 1987)
Director : John Hughes
Producer : Alexander and Ilya Salkind
Screenplay : John Hughes
dhsqbfq-a4ffdb7a-1f4f-4c4a-9419-76d2bf5e8ebc.jpg

Project History
Though Supergirl is a box office disappointment , Warner Brothers and The Salkind's still feel that their is box office potential for The Girl Of Steel.

However, drastic changes would have to be made for the sequel , and the project would have to be much closer to the standards of the first Superman film .

The Producers and The Studios wanted a much hotter director with youth appeal .
Director and Writer John Hughes is courted for the project given his success with
The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Pretty In Pink .

Surprisingly, Hughes agrees, but he wants full creative control and autonomy from The Salkinds influence .

Warner Brothers agrees with the terms and the Salkinds, though not as pleased , see more benefits to letting the proven hit maker turn the next Supergirl film, into a success.

Script
Many of the elements of the original Supergirl are all but abandoned including the Linda Lee identity .

The new film would serve as an entirely new story as opposed to a direct sequel and would feature appearances by Lois, Jimmy, and Superman, who would have a supporting role as mentor to Supergirl.

John Hughes ultimately crafts a right of passage story, about the film's three central characters, learning to step out of the shadows of their relatives ,and forge their own paths.

Supergirl is taking a larger role on the world stage , while trying to live up to the standard set by her cousin.
All the while, her alter ego doesn't want to make the same sacrifice's for her happiness the way Kal has had to.

The second character , Alex Luthor , is ashamed of his Father's legacy , and goes by a different last name.

He's tried to escape his father's legacy, even though, he knows that he too has a dark side , and feels his predestined to follow in his father's footsteps.

The third character , in the Trinity , is Winslow Slott aka The Toyman, whose father was a brilliant and successful inventor , where as The Toyman has used his brilliance for malevolent
purposes.

The three characters make up an unusual triangle as Supergirl gains a bigger spotlight .
Winslow's becomes obsessed with her , and wants her , at all costs .

Alexander, Kara's co worker at a network Station , falls in love with her , with neither of them aware of each other's true identities.

So, in Hughes fashion , our female protagonist , is caught between two complicated young men , both of whom want her , all the while, she's still trying to discover the woman she wants to be.

The script would feature Amazo , as The Toyman's creation and ultimate weapon in the film's second and third acts .

The Cast

1747503174386.png
Supergirl / Kara Danvers : Helen Slater
Slater returns to the role that put her on the map , and following the hit The Legend Of Billie Jean , slater is eager to star in Hughes's film which brings more depth and maturity , to the role of Supergirl.

a313337a881467e4cdd428e21e1eed17.jpg

Toyman / Winslow Slott : Matthew Broderick

Though several young actors such as Jon Cryer, Fisher Stevens , and Crispin Glover , are considered, Hughes wants an outside the box choice for The Toyman and goes with Matthew Broderick .

The Young actor plays against type from his War Games and Ferris Bueller role, and instead, plays a much more bookish , introverted , and creepy geniuis who won't take no for answer.

Hughes likes the idea of subverting the audiences expectations of Broderick as the good guy, and instead making him the villain.

1747503380076.png
Alexander Luthor : James Spader

In contrast to Broderick, Hughes casts Spader as the conflicted son of Lex Luthor .
While Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson are both considered , both actors pass , wanting to break out of the Brat Pack label .

However, Spader ultimately turns out to be the better fit and in contrast to Broderick, who looks like he should be the hero, Spader looks like her should be the villain.

1747503593568.png
Superman / Clark Kent : Christopher Reeve
Reeve decides to reprise his Superman role, jumping at the chance to play a mentor figure , and to be Kara's Obi Wan Kenobi , and big brother figure .

Kara's Boss : Paul Gleeson

JUSTICE FOR ALL ( 2006)
Director : Sam Mendes
Script : Andrew Kevin Walker
jla-deco.jpg

Project History
Following The Private Life Of Bruce Wayne and Arkham Asylum, a third film, in which becomes a loose trilogy with Batman as our guide into the DC Universe, is greenlit.

With The Road To Perdition's Sam Mendes, helming the proejct, the goal is for the film to explore The Dark Knight's role in the a world of other heroes, outside of his personal relationships and his dynamics with Gotham's criminals.

However, this exploration into the DC Universe would be through the framing of an old fashioned, noir murder mystery, with DC comics greatest villain, Lex Luthor, the murder victim .

Story
As the third film in a loose Noir trilogy, Batman once again is our guide into a 1940s style world filled glamour, shadows, and ambiguities .

Taking a page from Murder On The Orient Express , The Dark Knight detective must cuss out , amongst a variety of suspects who Murdered Industrialist Lex Luthor.

However, instead of the suspects being train passengers from all walks of society, the suspects would be men and women of honor , who are superheroes .

In this version of the Myths , The Batman is has shunned working with meta-humans and other vigilantes, and as such , doesn't know them personally, but knows of their reputations.

Batman would be the Philip Marlowe , trying to move beyond the glossy facades of America's Heroes, in order to get down to get behind their masks, and discover their true connections to Luthor.

For his part , Bruce and Lex have traveled in the same social circles for years, but neither has ever truly trusted the other .

Bruce knows that despite Lex's humanitarian stances and image, that Metropolis's golden boy, is no saint.

As he delves into deeper into the mystery behind Luthor's murder , it soon becomes apparent that Lex discovered their true identities , and likely held that information from Blackmail purposes, in addition to having compromising material on politicians, police officials, and public servants around the country.

The film would deal with the concepts of vigilantism, absolute power and corruption , and The Dark Knight would have to confront his own biases and position in society as being essentially, "Above the Law".

The script features characters such as Superman, Lois Lane , Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, and Black Canary as suspects , setting up spin off films for a shared DC Universe, and an eventual JLA film.

Ultimately, the true culprit would turnout to be Basil Karlo , aka Clayface , with Warner Brothers wanting the stray away from the idea that one of their marquee DC heroes , is a cold blooded , murderer.

However, the question would remain whether Lex is truly gone, or whether this is an elaborate plan , to discredit his opponents.

It's wild how, alongside a pretty respectable career, Andrew Kevin Walker wound up on the periphery of quite a few comic book superhero films, but never got to directly contribute.

I really need to watch more of the old Wonder Woman TV series (pity it's gone from HBO Max :weeping:). I really need to watch more of the old Wonder Woman TV series (pity it's gone from HBO Max :weeping:). Of course we have fun around here imagining versions of WW's comic rogues getting their due opposite Lynda, but which baddie is our Khan Noonien Singh? Y'know, that one-off TV villain with the potential for a triumphant return on the big screen?

I was born in 79' , so I missed the OG Wonder Woman series , for the most part , as a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s.

On the other hand , The Batman 1960s show, had reruns on Fox 11 here in LA, and on the Family Channel , in the late 80s and early 90s .

I also saw reruns of The George Reeves Superman series in the early 90s .

I knew about Carter as Wonder Woman as a child but , I didn't end up seeing actual episodes until the DvD's of the series were released.

I think the only rogue from WW comics ,who made it into the series, was The Baroness during season one, though I don't know if she could be considered WW's, Khan .

She was probably one of the easiest villains , to translate to TV back in the 70s, so, I could see the logic in using her.

I think they probably could have pulled off Doctor Poison and Dr. Psycho by the 1970s ,if they wanted to adapt them .

It would have been awesome to see characters such as Cheetah, Dr. Psycho , Ares, and Artemis do battle with Carter's Wonder Woman.

Joanna Cassidy of Bladerunner and Who Framed Roger Rabbit is my fan pick as the 70s era Cheetah , since she had the toughness, attractiveness , presence, and acting talent to play a wicked foe.

She's also one of the actresses of that time, at 5'9, who I could see holding her own, in a fight with Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman.

BATMAN AND SUPERMAN : WORLD'S FINEST ( 2016)
Director : JJ Abrams
Producer : Charles Roven
Screenplay : Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci , and JJ Abrams
Music : Michael Giacchino
cbj9ov1o45641.jpg
7bf1cc0d36ae0c30e9d88c4c25184695.jpg

Project History
With the polarized fan reaction , and mixed critical reception of Man Of Steel, WB execs are anxious for a dramatic overhaul for the sequel .

The goal would be two fold : Introduce a new version of Batman to Create a launching point for a larger DCU, and present a more optomistic and idealistic version of Superman in contrast to the new Batman.

Automatically, it becomes clear that Zack Snyder isn't the man for the job , and he parts ways with the studio.

In his place is Star Trek director JJ Abrams , who had previously been attached to Superman several years earlier .

David Goyer ultimately departs as writer as JJ Abrams, Robert Orci , and Alex Kurtzman take over the screenwriting duties .

Meanwhile , Charles Roven stays on as producer while Christopher Nolan lends his support to Abrams.

Abrams involvement in the project brings mixed reaction with some fans fearing the film will be campy and feature a problematic "mystery box " element to the story.

On the other hand, many fans who dislike Man Of Steel are more open minded and relieved at the change of direction , as is one of the film's lead stars, Henry Cavill.

The film goes into production in 2015 right off of the heals of Abrams work on Star Wars : The Force Awakens .
The plan is for the film to have a Summer 2016 release date , and is titled Batman And Superman : The World's Finest , thus, abandoning the original concept under Snyder and Goyer , of Batman Vs Superman.

Hans Zimmer is also replaced with Michael Giacchino

Script
The goal of Abrams and Co is to do to the Superman sequel what he did with the Star Trek 2009 reboot.
He wants to give the world a fresh and vibrant energy , and essentially be a soft reboot with a new yet retro look , evocative of the Fleischer serial .

The events and controversies of the first film would be totally ignored, in favor of diving into a new Story ,and a new Status Quo .

Superman would very much mirror the optimistic and positive image of hope reminiscent Christopher Reeves version , allowing Cavill's charm and regal comportment to shine through.

His Clark Kent persona , would very much be the mild manner and somewhat awkward but well meaning, Clark Kent.

Batman , on the other hand would be a brooding and hungry young avenger , who, like Kal El, is relatively early in his career .

Meanwhile , his Bruce Wayne ,would be the dashing young playboy whose legendary parties and exploits are all over social media .

Abrams and Co abandon Snyder and Goyer's idea of a Middle aged Batman , not wanting to repeat the same characterization of the Bruce Wayne from The Dark Knight Rises .

They also feel that the story of two young men , who see the world totally differently, but have to work together, adds much more room for drama and comedy.

Wanting to go big with the first team up film , the film's villains would be Lex Luthor, The Joker and Harley, and Metallo, Lex's muscle and enforcer , in addition to the attractive , but lethal , Mercy Graves.

The film draws inspiration from The Batman And Superman animated team up film from the 2000s, in addition to Batman/ Superman : Public Enemies .

Lex Luthor would be the CEO and Golden boy of Metropolis , envious of both Superman and Bruce Wayne , seeing both men as different sides of himself .

He wants both of them taken down and sees The Joker as the perfect tool to do it .

Lois Lane would return of course , this time with Jimmy Olsen in tow .

On the Bat side of things, the film would feature Batman mainstays , James Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth.

While Warner Brothers insists on the inclusion of Wonder Woman, Abrams is able to talk execs down, feeling that there was already more than enough to get audiences interested in the new DCU.

Additionally, Doomsday and The Death Of Superman arc is totally canned feeling it inappropriate, for a film whose tone is much closer to Star Trek and Mission Impossible 3 , as opposed to the much darker storyline Snyder and Co had envisioned.

The Cast

Superman / Clark Kent : Henry Cavill

EorN0efWMAE3f9c.jpg

Batman / Bruce Wayne : Robert Pattinson

For the role of Batman, Abrams makes his first controversial casting decision and picks the Twilight actor to follow Christian Bale's iconic portrayal of The Dark Knight .
His casting choice is met with immediate backlash by online fandom , but Abrams likes Pattinson's natural charm and charisma and yet feels he can portray a driven and brooding Batman, in contrast to Cavill's more Superman .

actor-matt-damon-10917_large.jpg

President Lex Luthor : Matt Damon

For the role of Lex Luthor , names like Bryan Cranston, Adam Driver, and Zachary Quinto are rumored , but Abrams swings for the fences and Matt Damon agrees to play the role.

Abrams feels that Damon can play the multiple sides of a complex Luthor who can be charming but could also be a physical threat in a one on fight .
Abrams also likes the contrast between Damon, Cavill and Pattinson.

1748985528337.webp
Joker : Joaquin Phoenix

For the role of The Joker, Abrams goes outside the box and picks Joaquin Phoenix, a casting which is met with much more approval than Pattinson's casting as Batman.
Not wanting a copy of Ledger's performance, instead, Abrams looks more to the characterization of Davien in MI: 3.

amy-adams.jpg

Lois Lane : Amy Adams
Amy Adams reprises her role as Lois Lane, though, this time around, her red locks are replaced with a more brunette look reminiscent of the classic Lois Lane, in addition, her characterization is more of the adventures spit fire of Kidder, Hatcher, and Durance's portrayals.

oi80dufv69f31.jpg

Harley Quinn: Margot Robbie
Having already been selected for a Suicide Squad film, Robbie is brought in to play Harley while the Suicide Squad film is put on hold .

1536233445-dave-bautista-mr-hinx-spectre.jpg

Metallo / John Corbin : Dave Batista
For the role of Metallo, Abrams wants an imposing force presence who could believably be a Kryptonite powered cyborg, and Guardians Of The Galaxy actor Dave Batista , jumps at the chance to play The Superman villain.

Sylvia-Hoeks-Bladerunner-1024x1024.png

Mercy Graves : Sylvia Hoeks
Already signed for the upcoming Bladerunner film, Abrams chooses Hoeks to play to role of Lex's superstrong public relations manger Mercy , bent on intimidating those in the press who dig too deeply into Lex's affairs.

ovfgjgaE7aAXKYaemABX6pJFwRk.jpg

Jimmy Olsen : Thomas Brodie Sangster
For the role of Jimmy Olsen, Abrams chooses Thomas Brodie Sangster who is the spitting image of a classic 1940s style version of the character.
Brodie plays Superman's biggest fan and Clark's kid brother and comic relief.

Alfred Pennyworth : Pierce Brosnan
For the role Of Alfred Pennyworth, Abrams choses former OO7 actor Pierce Brosnan for his charm and humor , feeling him a natural contrast to Pattinson's Bruce Wayne .

Perry White : Laurence Fishburne
James Gordon : Bruce Greenwood
Martha Kent : Diane Lane

Lex and Joker sure do make sense as the villains for a Batman/Superman crossover. Though Phoenix (as Joker) would probably be way too artistic for Abrams.

I think around 2013-14 pretty much everyone was hoping, and most actually thinking, that Cranston would play Lex in the sequel and the biggest concern with him was just why wasn't he in/mentioned in MoS.

Anyone would have a real tough time following Bale as Batman just 4 years after TDKR.

Anthony Hopkins as Jor-El seems so fitting or even obvious it might be real interesting to have him around 2013 instead play an older Lex, now more against type, he did get famous from playing Hannibal but this would be very different kind of villain, I can definitely see him as being long super-successful, rich, admired and also really successfully duplicitous and outraged that there's now a more powerful, more admired upstart.

THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA ( 1978)
Director : Guy Hamilton
Producers : Ilya and Alexander Salkind
Screenplay : David and Leslie Newman
Music : Jerry Goldsmith
wgqxbly48lr41.jpg

Project History
As The Salkinds begin the steps of acquiring the rights to make a Superman feature film , they also discover that the rights to several other dc comics heroes are up for grabs, at a cheap price.

Their recent Musketeers films ,and the disaster film craze of the decade, inspire the filmmakers to put off a solo Superman film, and instead, make a sprawling, big budget , blockbuster, Justice League Of America film .

Many in the entertainment industry feel their mad .
A solo Superman film is , in itself, a massive leap of faith .

However, the idea of a live action Justice League film , featuring several heroes in spandex, is considered lunacy .

It's one of the major gambles of the decade , but if it pays off, the film could net extraordinary benefits and profits .

With the negative pick up deal that the Salkinds make with Warner Brothers , WB isn't worried about picking up the tab on the risky venture , since the cost of producing the film will fall entirely on the Salkinds.

Even so , The Salkinds have trouble securing loans and investments for the risky project .

Eventually, The pair secure enough financing for the project and James Bond director Guy Hamilton is chosen for the project , with writers David and Leslie Newman brought onto pen the film.

The movie will film largely in Canada for a Christmas 1978 release date .

Screenplay
Taking inspiration from The Batman 1966 film and from The James Bond film Thunderball , Several Supervillains unite to high jack a nuclear weapons , and hold the fictional superhero cities of Metropolis, Gotham, Star City, Central City, and Amnesty Bay hostage .

The individual heroes must put aside their differences, in order to prevent,
the end of the world .

The tone of the film would largely be played straight in the style closer to films like ,
The Towering Inferno and Airport .

However, there are some campy elements of the film , not fully ready to break from the campy style of the 1966 Batman series .

The script , however, is still very much a product of it's time , and steeped in the 1970s .

Bruce Wayne is a disco attending playboy having lavish parties at his Mansion, while also prowling Gotham's streets as a no nonsense detective .

Clark Kent and Lois Lane are stylish tv reporters , trading witty banter akin to the tv series
Hart To Hart .

Oliver is very much anti establishment , while Hal is very pro status quo.

Diana is a diplomat representing Themiscyra and a fierce warrior , While Arthur is her cocky rival .

Barry , meanwhile , is the rookie of the group .

Holding the world hostage, are villains such as Lex Luthor, The Joker, Captain Cold, Sinestro, Black Manta, and Dr. Poison .

At a runtime of nearly 3 hours, there are constant revisions to the script, and ultimately, certain subplots are dropped for time and the focus of the JLA team , ultimately becomes the trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Casting
Though The Salkinds originally hope for huge name actors, the ballooning budget and clashing personalities, make it virtually impossible to get everyone on board.

Beatty and Redford turn down the Superman role, while Jane Fonda wants a solo Lois Lane film.

Clint Eastwood is uninterested in playing The Dark Knight , while Dustin Hoffman passes on Lex Luthor.

Paul Newman is approached to play Batman or Green Lantern , and turns both roles down .

While Ricardo Montalban is considered for the role of the Joker , the actor is dissatisfied with the screenplay feeling that his role could be reduced to nothing more than a cameo.

Meanwhile Faye Dunaway turns down Wonder Woman , feeling it silly to play a role ,that's already being played by another actress ,on television.

Ultimately, the cast is made up of recognizable faces but no star equal to the likes of Charlton Heston or Steve McQueen , who appeared in similar ensemble disaster films.

The two exceptions are Alec Guinness, who's cast as Alfred Pennyworth, and Telly Savalas , who chews up the scenery as Lex Luthor.

SUPERMAN REVISITED ( 1995)
Director : Tim Burton
Producer : Jon Peters
Music : Danny Elfman
Screenplay : Daniel Waters and Sam Hamm
a32c3559ad356cbad55434ed09c0885c.jpg

Project History
In the aftermath of Batman Returns mixed reaction , a chain of events results in the development ,of one of the more controversial Superman film projects to date.

While Warner Brothers Execs dissuade Burton from making another Batman film, Producer Jon Peters still wants Burton in the fold , and proposes that Burton instead help revive another
super hero property , Superman.

While the property had already gone through numerous re-writes by the early 90s, by 1992, Execs decide to make a Superman 5 as opposed to a full on reboot or adapting The Death Of Superman .

Though the original cast has rejected returning, WB decides to move forward with a soft reboot ala The Bond series .

Burton agrees to shift to Superman instead of Batman Continues, as long as he creative control .
Execs agree , given that the Superman project is going nowhere .

However, Jon Peters would have a firm handle on the project and would act as a check if Burton took the project in a direction Peters or The Studio didn't agree with.

Script

the story of the film is crafted to serve as a a loose sequel to the first two Superman films, while disregarding the events of Superman 3 and 4 .

At the same time, Sam Hamm and Daniel Waters script , would take place in a retro , 1940s like world akin to the first two Batman films , complete with 1930s and 1940s style dialog and complete with art deco designs.

The story would find Superman facing off with his monstrous Doppelganger , Bizarro, created by the escaped Mad Scientist and evil genius, Lex Luthor, in a nod to the Golden age comics.

However, unlike the previous two films, The Man Of Steel would truly feel like an outsider , and would be a much more elusive and mysterious figure than Reeves version of the character.

Meanwhile , Clark Kent would be the off beat and awkward reporter , pinning away for Lois Lane , while she remains infatuated with the mysterious visitor from another planet.

However, the film would have Lois, for the first time, finally begin to develop unexpected feelings for Clark Kent after working with him for years, further complicating his relationship with Lois .

Bizarro , is based on classic universal monsters such as Frankenstein and King Kong, and Lois Lane, becomes the object of his affections, and eventually , takes her after turning on Lex and his minions.

The film would feature a spectacular aerial battle between the two goliaths meant to rival the battle between Superman and The Phantom Zone criminals .

While Brainiac is originally considered , it's decided to save the classic villain for the sequel .

Superman / Clark Kent : Johnny Depp

As with the casting of Keaton, Burton wants to go for Outside the box choices for Superman.
While Keanu Reeves, Ethan Hawke, Gary Oldman, and even Daniel Day Lewis , are considered,
Burton sticks closer to home and casts Johnny Depp as Superman .

His casting is met with the same backlash that Keaton received a few years earlier , while his largely female fanbase rejoices at the choice.
The Media however , thinks of him as a strange recast of Reeves Superman .

TMFO-JenniferJasonLeigh-8-thumb-700x377-59148.jpg

Lois Lane : Jennifer Jason Leigh

Though Winona Ryder is Burton's top choice, she has other commitments and passes on the role.
Lara Flynn Boyle and Sheryl Fenn are also considered , but Burton chooses the talented Jennifer Jason Leigh as a more complex version of Lois , who also has more of an edge to her.

0555d75d5f545f43c4ab6fca3631bccb.jpg

Lex Luthor : Sean Penn

For the role of Luthor, Burton continues his style of outside the box casting, and casts Sean Penn to play an out there , mad scientist version of Lex , radically different from Hackman's portrayal.
Robin Williams is briefly considered , but ultimately, the actor passes on the role.

vincent-donofrio-in-men-in-black-1997-v0-so57s01eylac1.jpeg

Bizarro : Vincent D'Nofrio

For the role of The Monster, Burton chooses D'Nofrio , for his ability to play both tragic and menacing .

Beating out other gen X up and coming actors, Matt Damon is cast as Superman's pal

Jimmy Olsen .

WONDER WOMAN RETURNS ( 1988)
Director
: Leonard Nimoy
Producers : Lauren Shuler Donner

1750048874313.webp

Project History
With another Superman film and a Batman film both in development, Warner Brothers pictures decides that the time is right to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen.

However, seeing the success of The Star Trek reunion films , and with several other television shows from the 1950s and 1960s being revisited in the form of TV movies , Warner Brothers takes the unlikely step of reviving the Wonder Woman TV series and making a feature film that would continue the story of Diana Prince.

While getting a much younger, 20 something unknown in the part is also an attractive option,
Warner Brothers ultimately feels the safer beat is to bring back the very popular and beloved Lynda Carter who was only in her mid 30s and unlike Adam West, hadn't aged out of playing the part.

Boarding the project as director is Leonard Nimoy, who had scored two big hits in Star Trek 4 : The Voyage Home and with Three Men And A Baby.

The film , unlimited by the contrainsts of a tv budget , promised to be a major , family friendly , motion picture set for a Summer 1988 release.

While many in the 1980s film industry are highly skeptical of the success of a potential Wonder Woman film, Leonard Nimoy directing, and with Lauren Shuller Donner producing , WB execs feel confident they could have a hit on their hands.

Screenplay
Taking place 10 years after the end of the series, Diana has returned to Paradise Island , feeling that America is in good hands with President Steve Trevor Jr.

However, when a radical faction of Amazons leave Paradise Island and wreak havoc on Earth , Diana knows she is the only one who can stop them .

At the same time, the Princess is compromised as her cousin Antiope , leads the Amazonian rebellion against the world of man , feeling Diana was too soft to rule men.

The Story would feature an older and less naive version of Diana , yet still with the hope and optimism which humanity is in dire need of .

Aiding her in her mission is Keith Griggs , one of the President's most trusted allies , and a love interest for Diana in the film.

The film is a fish out of water story , in the sense that, Diana has to once again re-acclimate herself to an Earth that dramatically changed in the decade she's been gone.

The film features sprawling actions scenes as Wonder Woman battles her super powered foes.
At the same time, the script features a good dose of humor similar to the Star Trek films as opposed to campy moments.

In the end, she defeats the amazons and is once again embraced as Earth's champion, however, this Diana decides to stay as opposed to returning to Paradise Island, leaving the door open to a sequel.

BATMAN UNMASKED ( 1992 )
Director : John McTiernan
Producers : Jon Peters and Peter Guber
Executive Producers : Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan
Story by : Sam Hamm
Screenplay : Larry Ferguson and Donald E Stewart.
Music : John Williams
7f5190cc2c528c3c5a48f52e7e1cfe6b.jpg

Project History
After the success of Batman 1989, a sequel is inevitable, and Warner Brothers studios want it to be the biggest Batman film yet , featuring big names playing multiple villains ,and the addition of Robin.

However, Burton isn't as enthused by the prospect of another Batman film as The Public, or WB execs are , and ultimately passes on directing another film.

Ultimately, Warner Brothers feels the franchise has far too much money making potential to let the lack of Tim Burton stop them from moving forward .

There was going to be another Batman film with or without Tim Burton , and Jon Peters and Peter Guber don't hesitate to move onto another film maker regardless.

Though several filmmakers are considered , The Hunt Ford Red October's John McTiernan , lands the directing job for what's now being Titled , Batman Unmasked .

Given the grand scale of Sam Hamm's original draft, McTiernan seems like the best choice to balance the action with characterization .

Ultimately , McTiernan brings on Larry Ferguson and Donald E Stewart to flesh out Sam Hamm's story, while Danny Elfman returns to score the film .

Story

Four years after Batman's defeat of The Joker , Gotham City is plagued with the a variety of Supervillains , each more deadly and dangerous than the last.

As the caped crusader becomes the subject of debate and division in the city , he faces in enemies from The Mob, The Supervillains, and The D.A.

Soon , their interests begin to align and an unlikely alliance is formed, in order to unmask and destroy the Batman.

But as The Dark Knight stands alone, against impossible aides , he finds an allie in a young kindred spirit , in need of guidance , and dedicated to saving Gotham City.

Script

Batman Unmasked is a much more sprawling story than the first film , and focuses much more on Batman's effect on Gotham , and how in turn the rise of the freaks effect's Bruce Wayne, causing him to question his usefulness.

Having avenged his parents The Caped Crusader faces an existential crisis of purpose , to which Robin offers him in the face of a conspiracy that threatens to destroy him .

The Robin of the script is an amalgamation of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake .

Batman faces , in essence, four foes in Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler and Harvey Dent .

However, unlike the first film, the villains aren't given backstories , but are instead, fully formed having emerged over the years between the two films.

The Penguin is a high society , untouchable, crime boss, in a role akin to The Kingpin in Marvel comics.

Catwoman, is one of Batman's deadliest foes giving the Caped Crusader a run for his money in hand to hand combat , in addition to being a master of disguise .

While The Riddler is a shadowy figure fixated on The Dark Knight , and close to unlocking his true identity.

Harvey Dent , is ambitious and relentless in his campaign against The Batman , while being Bruce Wayne's best friend .

Though in original drafts, Vicki Vale is dropped.

McTiernan and the crew feel that a love interest isn't needed , and given the amount of characters, there are more than enough obstacles and events involved that a romance would feel forced.

The Cast

actor-michael-keaton-224252_large.jpg

Batman / Bruce Wayne : Michael Keaton

Though Keaton is hesistant to return without Burton, ultimately, his agent advises him to at least do one more film before abandoning a guaranteed hit film.

images

The Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot : Dustin Hoffman

The fans and audiences want Danny Devito to portray the iconic character, Dustin Hoffman is the front runner , and ultimately agrees to take the role of the more calculating and manipulative puppet master iteration of the character.

5bf23b6ce0994d620c3e51a3639d723d

The Riddler : Tom Hanks

While Robin Williams , Brad Dourif, Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe are all considered for the part , Tom Hanks agrees to play the famous villain, in a casting coupe.

The actor is intrigued at playing a cerebral and unsettling genius as opposed to the wired and off the wall iteration from the 1960s series , and likes the idea of being Batman's intellectual equal, if to superior.

cc2006ba97d979a3da45109580eccca8.jpg

Catwoman/ Selina Kyle : Sigourney Weaver

While several of Hollywoods big name actresses want the role, McTiernan wants a bonafide action star who could conceivably hand take Batman in a fight .

At the same time, he wanted an actress who could become sultry and seductive on a dime .
A 6 feet tall, and with gravitas , Sigourney Weaver is appears the most plausible option as opposed to several of the more petite starlets who want the part,

The-American-President.jpg

Harvey Dent : Michael Douglas

In another casting coupe , Michael Douglas agrees to play the ambitious yet crusading Harvey Dent who walks the fine line between being a hero and a villain .

McTiernan likes the chemistry and contrast between Keaton and Douglas , with the stage being set for Two Face in the sequel .

98a6950446e34c05d1a13dc82d57ce6aafe0df1a.jpg

Robin / Jason Drake : Ethan Hawke

While Several young actors of the day audition for the part , Ethan Hawke is ultimately
cast as Jason Drake aka Robin .

Alfred Pennyworth : Michael Gough
James Gordon : Pat Hingle
