Rth has it at low to mid 40's for Friday (counting Thursday previews) and WOM is amazing so it could easily top 120. What amazed me was the number of girls at the showing I saw who were big fans. Several had Deadpool shirts and one hot young blond (from what I could see of the figure and ponytail sticking up from the mask) came in full costume, a really professional looking one too, although the mask was a bit loose.

Deadpool, Lady Deadpool and Gwenpool are very popular with female fans. Especially regarding cosplay.

The problem for X-Men is that they don't have a lot of trust built up due to the fact that the efforts have been so uneven in the past. If Apocalypse is a dud (which I don't think it will be), then who knows what comes next?

The problem with the X-Men movies is/was that the filmmakers were trying way too hard to not make them look like a superhero movie with colorful costumes. Deadpool (and to a lesser extent, X-MEN FC and the future scenes in X-MEN DFOP) have changed all that.

It is going to be a fun weekend. The numbers being tossed around is kind of tough for my mind to wrap around. We are talking about an R-rated, first outing superhero film in FEB outdoing the opening weekend of any MCU film that does not have Robert Downey Jr. (And yes, it outdoes the X-films)

I am thinking it is a real shame that Suicide Squid isn't going to be R.

Won't have to hear anymore of the "Deadpool is not A list" debates.

I'm a MCU fan and I'm happy for Deadpool's success, even though I don't always like Fox's Marvel movies (*cough*Fanta4tic*cough*). I hope DP's box office performance will convince Kevin Feige that it is okay to produce R-rated Marvel movies that have nothing to do with Netflix. I'd love to see a Midnight Sons movie that is also rated R in the future.

It will. He's about to do $500-$700 million off of a $60 million budget. Another thing this movie proves is that every damn superhero movie doesn't need to be $100 million plus to be a massive success. And it feels good for this movie to reaffirm that after I've been saying it for years.

Pretty certain it's marketing budget was higher than a movie of it's budget would normally get, though. And does that team deserve a big bonus.

Yeah, Marvel Studio's popularized the cinematic universe.

Fox will popularize R-rated superhero movies.

Though, it might be that Deadpool is perfect for this subgenre of R rated superhero movies.

Take away the humor and madness and people become less curious.

There's a few ways you can go with the R rating, though. Deadpool is in the tradition of R-rated comedies with a bit of the ultra violence.

Suicide Squad seems like it would've been a good fit for going into some seriously messed up and dark territory. A theoretical Midnight Sons movie would be horror.

Even so, it's destined to be a highly profitable venture. Especially once merchandising is taken into effect given the enormous boost of his popularity.

With that said, even though their marketing budget was a tad higher than you'd usually expect, I'd say it was the right move. They played every card they had and it sure as hell paid off. :woot:

Good point.

Look at when Marvel Studios does political thrillers and space opera.

Critical and box office smash hits.

No doubt they could come up with successful formulas for darker or more vulgar source material.

I know the character of Gwenpool is beyond silly, but I wonder if Sony or/and Fox can use the character in film.

Probably not exactly given the hybrid name Gwenpool. But the character comes from a place where Marvel comics are real, and she's essentially just a fan. So much like
Bob Agent Of Hydra
showed up. There's probably a fun way to put her in a cameo or shout out. They can easily have her be a Deadpool cosplayer in pink or something. Fans would flip over that.

Erm... Anyone want a Deadpool corps movie?

It would be funny.

Maybe in a nightmare sequence or something, but nothing outside a quick joke. I much rather them get into more of Joe Kelly, Fabian Niceiza, Gail Simone or Mark Waids early stuff.

More profitable and impactful overall, but I don't think it's R rating will allow it to reach Apocalypse's total sum. Will probably fall just short over 4 days.

I'm curious on how/if this will impact Apocalypses box office. Obviously audiences know this is a connected universe now.

Regardless, Deadpool has smooth sailing for about a month now until Bats vs Supes hits.

This not only puts to rest the R rating myth, but also having a tentpole flick in Feb. It really makes no difference when these films are released, people will show up if they want to. The arguments that they all need to be shoved in summer really needs to die.

Yeah, good points. I actually think Civil War has the worst release date now...

Civil War is more then fine and everyone is too scared to be close to it. It's just a question of how big it will be.

While I think Apocalypse will do very good business (more then most think), Fox doesn't need to compete for that memorial weekend date anymore. Being within weeks of Civil War, TMNT 2, Warcraft and Alice is pretty crowded and films just cannibalize each other throughout the summer.

But ****s getting more and more crowded with blockbusters every year. Wolverine is very close to Kong and Beauty and The Beast in March 17. Time for somebody to start testing Sept.

Speaking of Wolverine, I now concede that Deadpool has surpassed him in popularity. I was on the fence, but no longer.

Goodness. Deadpool's an A-lister. And his movie's rated R. This is a gamechanger IMO.

Agreed (although never read Mark Waid's). What's your opinion on Duggan's run?
