3rd biggest opening for a non-sequel in history behind Avengers and Hunger Games.

Nobody and I mean NOBODY saw this one coming.

DC is probably going to put Lobo on the fast track now.

I haven't seen the movie yet (hard to do when you don't have a babysitter), but I'm very happy for Deadpool's success. I hope it will usher in more R-rated superhero movies in the future.

Let's hope so. I have wanted more R rated CBMs for ages. I would love it if we got a Dredd sequel and they actually advertised this time also.

R-rated if it's right for the character. Same logic as deciding if your superhero movie should be gritty and realistic.

The movie is at just over $260 million WW after its opening weekend according to BOMojo. That is some crazy stuff right there.

It never fails. A comic book movie comes out and kills it commercially and critically and some will believe that every other comic book movie should copy it. I know that's going to be what happens in the coming days and months. That's not the lesson to learn from Deadpool or any break out hit.

Saw DP last night and I'll be surprised if the legs aren't very strong for this baby. It was a late night screening and the theater was rocking. I'll be really curious to see how studios react to this, particularly those that make CBM's. I can see why people say it's a game changer, but only time will tell what that really means.

It is going t9 get good word of mouth which may get people to check it out next weekend who might not have.

I'm glad that it is a big success. I am surprised at how well the movie looked for its small budget, especially the special effects for the X-men.

DC is probably going to put Lobo on the fast track now.

If anything, I would think they would try their hand at Harley Quinn.

What does DC have to do with this? Why do people keep bringing up DC in here? This thread is about Deadpool's box office last I checked. Deadpool is a Marvel character.

True, common sense needs to be applied, if a property has the R rating feel already installed then go with it, no need to turn everything into R rated just because but also watering already established R rated things down to PG-13 like those discussed already just annoys and generally losses fans (Terminator).

There is room and scope for both ratings to be used, thats the thing to take away.

I agree. Inherently R rated things should stay R rated. Something that just isn't R rated material shouldn't be shoved in that box just cause. Punisher and Blade for instance are just R rated characters.

I agree with you and Spidey. Some properties work better with PG-13 ratings and others work better with R ratings. Deadpool shows that R-rated CBMs can also be very successful but that doesn't mean everything should be R from now on.

I do hope they stop putting out PG-13 sequels to historically R-rated franchises though :whatever:

I have to wonder if Dredd would've earned enough for a sequel with the studio fully behind it.

Definitely, I don't want to start suddenly seeing an R Rated Spiderman movie, he should stay at the rating he currently is. But there are R rated characters the studio's previously might have been hesitant to adapt and Deadpool shows if they are done right they can still be a huge success.

The Wolverine's rating is starting to bug me now. Here's hoping that if Wolverine 3 ends up deserving an R rating, Fox leaves well enough alone. Same goes for Suicide Squad.

Yes! This probably what most people really mean when they say they hope DP brings more R-rated movies into the fray.

Yeah, this can do nothing but good things for not just R rated movies, but comic book R rated material where studios can take a chance on with really out there stuff. The last R rated comic book film was Watchman and that failed because it wasn't a good movie. This is. The key: Make good movies first and then the out there material in it is the icing on the cake.

It sort of feels like thats where Jackman and Mangold want to take Wolverine to, especially with the extended unrated home release of The Wolverine. The success of DP may convince Fox to go for it or maybe they want to keep it PG-13 like all of what has come before with that character already established, its hard to know for sure whats in their thinking at the moment but will be interesting now to see where they take that after this, especially considering the links between the two characters.

I think it would have, it was barely even advertised at the time. I am hoping DP's success may mean that long rumoured Dredd sequel may actually get made now. Though it's only a slight hope.

I think the R rating helped the humor more than the action. Wolverine doesn't need to be an R unless you just want him to say the F word a lot.
