In the United States, R-rated means you have to be 17 or older to buy a ticket. You can still see it if you are under 17, but you have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian that's 17 or older.

NC-17 means no one under 17 is permitted.

I saw a group of people with a bunch of kids under 10 years old at a screening last night. Apparently they were French, so it's no big deal.

There were plenty of kids at my showing this morning, though the audience looked to be more teens/adults. No really young kids but I'd say the 12-17 demo was well-represented.

I guess I'm jaded or cynical or something but I didn't come out thinking that Deadpool deserved an R. Is it violent? Absolutely, but that violence is so over the top it's hard to take seriously. There's one sex scene that lasts about 8 seconds and most of the language issues are sexual innuendo versus straight-up cursing. There is one sequence involving his origin that is very dark and would be inappropriate for little kids, but bottom line for me is I've seen much worse in an R-rated movie before. As always YMMV.

The creative team poured their heart into this, the studio realized its potential and did a kick-ass job with the marketing and the release of it. I'd call it a well deserved surprise success.

I think Zoolander is a ridiculously overrated film. It has a few chuckles but it's not a good or really funny movie.

I like Zoolander, but even I had to laugh at it being any sort of competition this weekend. And clearly, I was right.

I still have to laugh at the theory that a lot of Zoolander's business this weekend is teenagers buying a ticket to Zoolander to sneak into Deadpool.

I'm pretty sure you can only drop a certain amount of F-bombs before you are automatically rated R, and this movie was using it freely.

Oh, I get why it was rated R. All I'm saying is that at least to me, it didn't feel like something I'd be worrying about my kid seeing.

If I had a kid I wouldn't mind my 13 year old seeing it.

I have a 12 year old and I would prefer he find out about pegging from a source other than Deadpool.... I am going to wait a few years before I allow them to see it...

Well he was wrong though. He said there is no way this would happen...and it did. He made this prediction after the film was greenit in 2015.

And I'm not saying he didn't have good reason to make that prediction, but he still predicted wrong.

Of course he was wrong. I'm not sure what we're supposed to argue about since we're obviously agreeing on both accounts.

Anyone know the name of the woman who whined on YouTube about how this movie needed to be PG-13 and she was upset because her kids want to see it. I want to troll her...

Had kids and babies crying in my theater as usual yesterday.

Out of the people I know they were fine with taking their kids until they heard there is nudity and sex. That can just steer them the wrong way. But I think there are plenty of parents bringing their kids without hesitation.

Her name is Grace Randolph. I would probably advise against trolling her.

I mean look the fact that people got that upset about her internet petition was stupid. Was her petition silly? Yes it was. But it's not like that petition was going to actually make a difference. I think it was dumber that a lot of people got so bent out of shape about it.

I find it weird that the gore is fine, but the sex scenes are where parents actually winced. Is what it is.

On topic though...150 bones for the weekend? Marvel is happy, even if they do have to share the glory with Fox.

Wait you have a 12 year-old who doesn't know that? From what I'm seeing they learn that stuff when they are like 7 or 8 now.

This. I had certainly seen worse when I was 13.

If your kid goes to a public school they already knows what pegging is.

On another note, congrats to deadpool! This bodes well for R rated superhero films.

When I was 13 I remember talking (well, probably more like whining) my grandpa into taking me to see Alien. Scared the living **** out of me and instantly became one of my favorite movies even if I did have nightmares for a week after.

And this thing was made for how much?

That $500-600 mil benchmark isn't looking that far off now.

Saw this again today in a packed theater in NYC. Most of the showings were sold out.

Americans love affair with violence and total prudishness when it comes to sex is problematic. Let's face it Superhero movies are promoting the ideas that vigilante justice is a good thing and that always solving problems with violence is a good thing. I know this is uncomfortable to admit but those are problematic messages. These films are mostly very, very prudish about sexuality in general.

People haven't gone into theaters and other public spaces and ****ed people to death but they have gone into those places and shot people to death.

Now I'm wondering if given a choice if I'd rather be shot to death or ****ed to death. Depends on how they look I guess. :o

BOM looks ahead:

Next weekend will be interesting as films that open this large tend to also drop more than 50% in their second weekend. The "A" CinemaScore definitely bodes well for the film's future as films that open with more than $120 million and have an "A" CinemaScore have all gone on to gross more than $300 million. Of the ten films since 2008 that opened with more than $120 million and held an "A" CinemaScore only two managed to drop less than 50%, those being 2015's blockbusters, Jurassic World (49% second weekend drop) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (39.8%). Deadpool, however, is in a league of its own as it is the only one in that group with an R-rating, a classification Hollywood is surely looking at closely. It will be interesting to see if we start seeing more films of this sort as we know a Deadpool sequel is already in the works.
