In 3 days, it became the fourth 2024 movie to hit the $200 million mark in North American box office. Worldwide, it is the siXth 2024 movie to hit the $400 million mark.

I would be shocked if Brave New World, Thunderbolts* and Fantastic 4 came close to those numbers - in their full run next year.

Got a shot at being the biggest R-rated film for sure.

Crazy OW. I would have been so far wrong on this one if I'd tried to predict it. Wonder where it can finish up.

Depends if it has good legs. I read somewhere that Multiverse of Madness which featured the Professor of Earth 838, opened higher in worldwide box office. But it missed the $1 billion mark by $45 million.

But I think this movie should have better legs at the box office. The new movies in August don't look like big competition to me.

I thought the Olympics would keep it from hitting 200m on opening weekend, but WOM is insanely good. We'll see how it holds up next weekend, but I think it's pretty safely hitting 1.2 billion. Underpromise, overdeliver.

It is just hilarious to me when this hits a billion, that this film features the first film appearance of Wesley Snipes as Blade since Dec 2004 and Jennifer Garner as Elektra since Jan 2005. The credits feature clips from the Elektra movie and Fant4stic, two of the worst rated Marvel movies ever. And the debut film appearance of Channing Tatum as Gambit after being associated with the character since X3 days.

Lolol. It overshadows the fact that this would be first billion dollar grossing film that features the Wolverine.

Wow, how much do you think domestically?

Marvel are probably more confident in Secret Wars now seeing that the GA at least is obviously not yet tired of multiverse style cameos.

The big surprise for me is this really seemed to overperform expectations overseas. Multiverse of Madness made about 6 million more globally in 2022, but it was PG-13, so much easier access too. The WOM on DP & Wolvie is pretty close to NWH, from what I can see, and that film had a 3.1 multiplier domestically. Even if this is under, say around a 2.8, its still pushing 600m domestically. I think the R-rating novelty (greater pent-up demand), the great WOM, as well as bringing Wolverine and Deadpool into the MCU, these factors will create the separation between this film and Multiverse of Madness as we move forward.

But we'll know better next week of course. Still on its way to topping Joker.

Joker 2 may reclaim the spot though.

Proper MCU event film numbers of old. I’m looking forward to the second weekend numbers to see how much potential this has got. I haven’t spoken about this film much with GA friends yet so don’t have a handle on how good the word of mouth is likely to be, but glad to hear if casuals are getting excited about CBMs again.

It does make you wonder how big the biggest multiversal cameofest ever, Secret wars, could be. Many geeks are getting bored of all this but the GA seem as excited as ever for crazy crossover stuff.

6th highest grossing opening off all time and its R rated, thats mad, dont know if being R rated will stop in getting to the $1 billion or not but thats a heck of start out the gate. A massive W for Marvel whatever happens next.
