Defiance - coming to Syfy in 2013

These last two episodes have been amazing! Loved watching Nolan kick Datak's arse!

I'm kind of confused about what exactly Irisa did there at the end. I mean I know she brought Nolan back but how? I thought the thing in the mines was a weapon.

Yeah the finale was confusing as well. I was thinking she would go back in time or something.

I think Irisa made a deal with "Irzu" to somehow bring Nolan back from the dead in exchange for her body to be used as a weapon.

Seems as if the Votan have been on Earth for at least 3000 years before they arrived en masse after their system was destroyed. I hope they go into more detail next season.

About the 3000 years thing, I thought that meant they had been searching for it across the galaxy for 3000 years then they found out it was on earth so they came here. They could have cleared that up a bit.

Yeah that episode last night was a bit cloudy last night. Not sure how what Irisa did brought back Nolan.

Glad to see Sukar back on his feet.

Kenya's fate is up in the air. I think she's still alive. Pale face still has a softy for her.

Well, that was short. Datak's reign as Mayor didn't even last long enough for him to sit behind that desk for more than a minute. lol His last line to his wife before the troops stormed in was a bit touchy.

Datak is a ****tard. I know their race has pride issues and that general was pissing all over his pride, but that was ignorant. You'd think they'd be more concerned with looking like rash reactive idiots who can't calmly and strategically plan. And him telling his wife they will be hunted. More like the armed mercenaries will storm the room, see the murdered general, and shoot the alien who did it. There won't be any hunting to it.

I thought the finale was FANTASTIC!!!!!

Greatly enjoyed it. The Irsia scene at the end was really cool. I thought the Datak scene was good, but not surprising. He wants to be this big, powerful guy but in the end he's still just a minor-league thug that's just in denial, so it was very in character for him in how he responded.

Over all...really strong episode.

For some reason this show reminds me of shows/movies like Gangs of New York.

It was more than pride. Datak came from nothing. He was a nobody on his world, he FINALLY gets a seat of power and is respected only to discover that everything he worked for was a lie and the general pissing on his pride just reminded him that he's back where he started in being a nobody. At that point he just snapped and didn't care anymore.

So, I guess it was pride mixed with hopelessness and rage. :)

I have a hope that at some point down the road Datak will open his eyes a bit and become somewhat likable. I wouldn't mind him being someone I either love or love to hate. As of now I just hate the bastard.

I dunno... For me, Datak Tarr falls quite firmly into the "love to hate" category. I thought Tony Curran turned in an excellent performance for the character. I find it quite enjoyable - even adorable - watching to see what new, atrocious act Datak is going to do next and why it's going to blow up in his face.

Speaking of which, is it just me or does the show have a very definite "civilised = evil" theme going on? I mean, consider the following:

  1. The show's lead protagonists started off as outsiders and survivalists who lived off the land.
  2. The Earth Republic - the bastion of human civilisation - is largely always portrayed as scheming, heartless, unscrupulous and placed in a villainous light; particularly those who prosper there (Colonel Marsh, Ambassador Tennety).
  3. When comparing between the two main alien races shown - Castithans and Irathients - the latter group are portrayed far more positively and sympathetically.
  4. Datak and Rafe. Enough said.
I think for future seasons, just to balance it out, the show should introduce a (leaning more towards the side of) good Castithan and/or villainous Irathient (tribe?) as well as introduce the Votanis Collective who - at least for the time - appear to be the more benevolent alternative to the Earth Republic.

Lastly, I'm a little disappointed that the show's foray into a Myth Arc with Irisa being some kind of prophecised "chosen one" and the introduction of mystical elements like Irzu. My problem with it is that it doesn't quite fit a sci-fi setting; instead giving the show a more fantasy feel except with cat-people and albinos instead of pointy-eared people and short people. It's not even that original. It's a tired, old storyline that shows up time and again in sci-fi when the writers have started running out of ideas. And Defiance jumped right into in its first season!!

My only hope is that this is all something of a misdirect and that Irisa didn't actually see her species' god. It's certainly a possibility. We've seen those artifacts create illusions and hallucinations when one of them manipulated Quentin out of throwing it away. As such, I suspect the artifacts are probably somehow sentient or alive. Perhaps they are related to the seventh race that we've not actually met yet (the Gulanee?). They're mysterious enough and we know that they require a protective layer as they can't survive exposure to the outside world.

Yeah. I know. It's a stretch. :woot:

They clearly have the ability to manipulate thoughts and visions, even formerly dead bodies with nanotechnology so it's not out of reason to believe something similar has happened here. Although it could also be their gods are sentient beings who pulled the old evolved energy being route or are extra-dimensional and not mythical.

Which sound a bit like the Gulanee, who are supposed to be big orbs of light and described as mysterious even within the Defiance world and setting. So far, we don't know what they're capable of or what their temperaments are like.

I didnt think the Irzu that appeared was the Irathient God.

I thought it was the technology embedded inside Irisa using that form to communicate with her.

The doctors past seems to be the most interesting part of this show.

Irisa is the hottest ugly babe ever!

Julie Benz :hrt:

Yeah, definitely found the doctor more interesting lately. At first she just seemed peculiar but no one special outside a group of aliens we knew nothing about. Now she's become one of the most interesting characters with her back story.

Indeed. What I really want to know is what led to her making such a moral 180; going from atrocity-performing scientist to benevolent healer.

Defiance Season 2 Promo

I like the new Thursday night slot. I normally don't watch any shows on Thursdays but in the Summer I now have 2 shows to watch(Defiance and Big Brother)

Watched this show on a binge watch and just finished the 1st Season, Overall I liked it and glad I finished the 1st Season before the 2nd Season starts tomorrow. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. The Ending was a little confusion so hopefully the premiere answers some of the questions I have.

Was wondering what happened to Defiance.

Is the game still going or did they ditch that?
