Cornell on Demon Knights!

I know this is my nerdgasms and fan hyping, but man did i just love the pitch idea for this and yeah really looking forward in general for this, besides Superman and Lex Luthor stuff he's written, Knight and Squire for me was mostly a fun book with a rather lackluster ending, but boy am i thinking about Captain Britain and the M13 with it's Britain sorcery and the way Cornell handled Dracula was so awesome, space vampire missiles from the moon?! OUTRAGEOUS!

Newsarama: Paul, let's just start by talking about what the thought is behind this comic. What are we going to see in Demon Knights?

Paul Cornell: For a start, we lead with the Demon Etrigan. This is Jack Kirby's creation, which I'm amazed and pleased to get my hands on. And he'll be leading others, including some classic DC characters, and including some new characters. It will be a setting I describe as "sword and sorcery superheroes in Medieval times."

That's really the heart of the concept. It's kind of like the Magnificent Seven. And I think we're looking to appeal to people who liked Dragon Age, who enjoy Game of Thrones — that really hardcore, gritty, bloodthirsty but also very passionate and very character-ful sword and sorcery fantasy.
I'm already a Game of Thrones tv series fan and a Dragon Age fanatic so this even further pleases me and gets me hyped. :p

Nrama: I'm sure you're creating some new characters for this, but you mentioned DC characters we'd recognize?

Cornell: The team the Demon leads will be made up of both classic DC heroes and familiar faces.
Obviously meaning we'll get Puritan Batman to sell this book, just kidding of course. :p I'm wondering if we could get Shining Knight from Seven Soldiers of Victory? =o An Incarnation of Hawkman aswell? Merlin will likely appeal, but hey how about King Arthur to the mix? :p

Cornell: I think it's beautiful. It's lovely. It suits me down to the ground. If there are any characters in this who are in the DC Universe now, then obviously what happens to them in the past may have an impact on what happens to them in the present. But apart from that, and a couple of other lovely, lovely links which I cannot go into, it's sort of a lovely playground. It's tabula rasa. It gives me a chance to develop a whole world.

Medieval DCU Earth is mine!
Make it work Cornell! :) Tony Daniel also confirmed he's going to supply covers for the series.

UPDATE: Logo & Cast

What new characters will debut in the series?
DEMON KNIGHTS: Al Jabr, the medieval playboy inventor; Clytemnestra, mysteriously independent from her people on the Island of the Amazons, the greatest archer of her age, who makes her way through Europe, staying apart, able to ride but not to walk.

What’s the unofficial tagline for this series, in your own words?
DEMON KNIGHTS: Swords and sorcery and super heroes. The Magnificent Seven in Dragon Age. Some previous sword and sorcery books always seemed a bit grey and brown to me. This one’s got a team of huge characters in a proper, mapped out, fantasy setting, with a certain grim Game Of Thrones edge to it.
Shining Knight and Vandal Savage also confirmed. =)

EDIT: Also Paul clarified that Clytemnestra is not the archer, she's an Amazon and then theres this greatest archer woman too.

Hopefully, we will see The Shining Knight, The Silent Knight, Claw The Unconquered, and the Brian Bolland Camelot 3000 characters. That would be freaking awesome!

I'm definitely in for this one, and most of the new supernatural books DC announced, alot of people are saying that these books are gonna get cancelled quick but we can't say they didn't at least try to put top flight talent on most of them.

I'm particularly excited about this one. I really loved Cornell's stuff on Action Comics (before the new Doomsday arc anyway) and Knight Squire.

That does indeed sound :awesome: and Cornell writing a swiord and sorcery seris will surely be amazing :hrt:

This is one of the few post-relaunch titles I'll be picking up. Camelot gets me every time, plus it's Cornell.

I want Cornell on an all-villains book. Legion of Doom... Secret Society of Super-Villains... Injustice League... I dont care! I just want it. :o

I actually had a dream about this book, where one of the members on the team was Wally West, who due to Flashpoint had been sent back in time and forgotten who he was, and became an aimless, super-fast wanderer. And so everyone hated Demon Knights, even though I really liked it and wanted people to give it a chance. I have a sad life. :(

Seriously, though, this book is right up near the top of my buy list for the relaunch. Paul Cornell is great. His run on Action Comics with Lex Luthor at the helm was just brilliant, and Knight and Squire was one of my favorite comics of the past 12 months. I'm pretty much guaranteed to try whatever project he does from here on out, hence me picking up Stormwatch too. But this, in addition to the Cornell factor, seems to have a great concept behind it too. My current obsession with Game of Thrones helps make a fantasy series an easy sell, too.

Set in the Dark Ages of the DC Universe, a barbarian horde is massing to crush civilization. It’s fallen to Madame Xanadu and Jason Blood, the man with a monster inside him, to stand in their way – though the demon Etrigan has no interest in protecting anyone or anything other than himself! It’ll take more than their own power to stop an army fueled by bloodlust and dark sorcery, and some very surprising heroes – and villains – will have no choice but to join the fray!

Cornell and Camelot are the reasons I'm buying this.

Yep thats the reason i am going to check this series out  Cornell writing a comic book about magical characters sounds pretty great to me :hrt: I wonder which characters will be appearing

I hope Morgan Le Fay appears in this series. I loves the DC version of that character

Etrigan is looking cool on that cover too

Tony Daniel did a pretty damn good job on that cover. Makes me wish that he was doing the art as opposed to Detective Comics.

It is a shame that he won't be doing the interior art for the series

I have not heard of the artists working on this series before but hopefully the art on the series is going to be as good as the writing

I don't know why, but I am getting a feeling that Demon Knights could very well become a spiritual successor to Secret Six, in terms of building up a cult following.

I wonder if some form of Knight and Squire are going to be on the team.

That would be pretty neat if we got to see medieval versions of those characters teaming up with Etrigan

I really hope so. I have a good feeling about this series

That title font hurts my eyes, but I'm looking forward to this. Should be interesting to see one of the ageless Amazons in a time period other than 1) the present or 2) ancient Greece.

The archer woman who can ride but not walk seems like a nod to Bran in Game of Thrones.

The siege that will reverberate through history to the present-day DCU begins as the Demon Etrigan and his unlikely lover, Madame Xanadu, face the Horde! What five (mostly) noble souls would be crazy enough to join them? The cover gives but a hint, and the point could well be moot by the time this issue’s done. For the Horde is armed with the magic of Mordru – including some decidedly different dragons!

It's DC universe vs. World of Warcraft. :p

This series looks better and better with every new tidbit that gets released.

Oddly I had not thought of the possibility of her being a centaur. But that would be kind of near too.

Cornell did describe this series as being like Game of Thrones

Which leads me to conclude that it shall be amazing

Yep I'm interested in this new Amazon character too. I wonder if this series will cross over with Wonder Woman at all

I love that DC is delving into the magical stuff with their reboot. Will be checking this out. With this reboot, I think I'm going to be subscribed to the most titles I've been subscribed to ever before. Wonder how bad my wallet will cry.
