Detective Pikachu

I'd be more interested in a Jigglypuff adventure musical film or a film centered on Pokémon Center employees or Officer Jenny's everyday job. I know it's kinda hard to adapt Pokemon into a live action films with so many Pokemons and you can't really showcase 7 gym leaders and the tournament in a single movie without resorting to montage scenes, even in a trilogy that would feel repetitive. But Detective Pikachu isn't exactly an inspired idea. Its so obvious that they are going with the most popular Pokemon and the concept isnt even interesting to begin with.

Nah it's Pokemon. It's got enough of people's childhood nostalgia that it will make a ton. Just keep it cute

Thats what they said about Power Rangers, ninja turtles, gi joe, etc etc none of these things really earned alot of cash

The first Ninja Turtles did, actually. It did almost 500 million on a 125 milion budget. It was just terrible and saw a huge drop off for the sequel. And most of the ones you mentioned are just generally not regarded as very good films, and while I liked Power Rangers, it had terrible marketing.

A Pokemon movie that doesn't suck and is marketed decently should be a pretty easy sell. Especially given how big it is internationally.

They've already done costume tests

Pika doesn't wear glasses. Movie sucks already, #BOYCOTT.

What Mister Pod said.

Pokemon was revitalized by an insanely trendy gps that barely functions as the average console/portable game.
Dunno what to expect from Detective Pikachu beyond some Who Framed Roger Rabbit schtick.

Pokemon had a downturn and wasn't as insanely popular as it was in the late 90's/early oughts, but the series was always around. The cartoon has been airing for God knows how long and they've been putting out new games pretty consistently. X&Y from 2013 sold over 16 million copies and the most recent follow-up from 2016, Sun & Moon, has sold 15 million thus far.

Mark Wahlberg voicing Pikachu. I would watch that.

So, they're trying to match the Japanese game's voice actor?

Yeesh that's bad casting.

Cute little pikachu played by those guys?

I sort of thought Pickachu would just say his name with subtitles on screen. :p

I'm just not understanding of all the Pokemon stories and material that's been around for over 20 years, why did they pick out a random Japan-only game that next to no one outside of Japan has even played?

If you did attempt the movie, why not stick to the basic premise? Trainer makes buddies with Pikachu and sets out to become a Pokemon master and catch 'em all.

‘Get Down’ Star Justice Smith Lands Lead in Live-Action ‘Pokemon’ Movie for Legendary (EXCLUSIVE)
Legendary has tapped breakout talent Justice Smith to star in the first-ever live-action “Pokemon” film titled “Detective Pikachu,” based on the titular character, sources tell Variety.

Rob Letterman is on board to direct from a script by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch.

First introduced in Japan in 1996, Pokemon has spawned more than 295 million video games sold worldwide, 23.6 billion TCG cards shipped to 74 countries, and an animated series spanning 20 seasons. The hugely popular “Pokemon Go” app saw the pocket monsters surge back into the pop culture consciousnesses last year.

Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan, as it has done with Legendary’s other films for years. The Pokémon Company’s long time movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it had similarly done in its partnership with Legendary on “Godzilla.”

Smith recently broke out on the Netflix musical drama series “The Get Down” after director Baz Luhrmann handpicked him to star in the series that he created and exec produced. While the series wasn’t picked up for a second season, Smith’s performance caught the eye of Universal and director J.A. Bayona, who tapped him for one of the new leads in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

He also recently finished filming on MGM’s “Every Day.” He is represented by WME, the Kohl Group, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

Oh lordt is that meant to be ash?

Probably not but this is all still such a strange phenomenon.

Ash wasn't in Detective Pikachu.

Why don't they just make a normal Pokemon movie? Why Detective Pikachu? I don't get it?
