Detective Pikachu

I'd like to get my hands on the sheets showing production costs in detail, and marketing cost, cause man does this have huge marketing in Japan.
When it comes to movies like this, his opinion carries a lot more weight for me than any of RT "top critics".
I mostly listen to his reviews cause they are fun to listen to, and now Kevin McAlistair adds to the fun. :D

This was to my surprise, better than I thought it was gonna be. Pretty solid. The thing I was most baffled by actually turned into a solid standalone story that carves out a nice place in the Pokemon world and doesn't feel they need the known stuff e.g. Ash. I liked these characters and this world and story. I got it once I watched it. I was glad to have been wrong here.

I was surprised how many of the names of the Pokemon Gens 1-3 I remembered. And my parents said knowing Pokemon would be useless later. Idiots
I instantly remember Snubbull, Ludicolo, Lucario, Aipom and Loudred from the trailers. And as for the first gen I think if you would give me a picture of all gen 1 pokemon and ask me to write their name, iwould instantly get everything right.

OP here. Enjoyed it well enough. Story was safe and by the numbers but that's ok for such a weird concept like this and with a movie full of live action Pokemon.

What were the best parts of the movie were Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith and their dynamic together and the Pokemon CGI/Creature design was perfect and I have full confidence in WB/Legendary to give us a Red/Ash vs Blue/Gary movie that's basically Rocky/Karate Kid with Pokemon. The Easter Eggs were a nice addition too. Also hoping for that Mewtwo movie set in this universe.

Overall a 7/10.

Also, I hope Justice Smith appears in Deadpool 3 as a Easter Egg haha.

Saw this and....liked it. It was an enjoyable movie. I wasnt really engaged with the story much and tbh, the whole Ryan Reynolds is Pikachu schtick kind of got old for me quick and I kind of felt myself wishing he would just shut up at times but thats just my personal take. Its a well made film overall.

Saw it yesterday and to me it was almost the definition of a 7/10 movie. Enjoyable and fun but also a story and plot points you've seen so many times before. I think it achieves everything it sets out to do which is to not be crap and it made me smile through most of it.

Ì thought I would at least found it fun, but when it ended I felt disappointed. Its like they just created a story with the lead guy and the missing father, with the Pokemons as glorified extras. At first, I was having fun seeing and spotting different Pokemons but they were like at least 50 Pokemons, I thought they would have been more surprise appearance but pretty much most of the Pokemons featured in the trailers made up 95% of those 50 pokemons featured in the movie.

If there were Pokemon that got a decent role, I guess just Mewtwo and Psyduck. Cubone got a nice small role in the start. But Jigglypuff, Eevee, Mr. Mime, Pidgeot, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Snubbull, Lickitung, Linu., cute at first (the Pokemons look really good in the movie) but easily could have been removed or replaced by another Pokemon, some of them were literally extras. I also did Not like the lead villains and evil Pokemons. I wish they were gym battles, people catching Pokemons with the poke ball, using the Pokedex, all that Pokemon stuff. of course I already knew the movie was about something else when I read the premise but still, I thought I would at least find it fun. The trailers were much better than the movie.

I get what you're saying, but I think they realise they need to earn their way to getting that movie we all really want to see ie Rocky with Pokemon. And they've earned it imo.

Saw it today and thought it was ok. I never was a Pokémon fan. Kids liked it and wife was entertained. I was really curious how Reynolds as Pikachu was going to work and was pleasantly surprised. 6.5/10.
