Detective Pikachu

Watched the movie today and I can say I was bored for most of the movie... very disappointing because I was looking very forward to this film.

The ending was nicely done.

I was hoping for a more positive reaction. I think my hype for this movie waned a bit.

It’s moved 2%? And the Top Critics, who overwhelmingly hate the movie, are overly represented as a proportion of that score? There’s about ten more top critics to be added, and about 200 normal reviews?

People were saying that Aquaman would collapse for the same reason. I think (hope) it will end up at 70.

I saw it and liked it - definitely get why people won’t though. It’s VERY Pokémon and I mean that in a good way and a bad way. It really takes and the good and the bad from the animated movies and games.

For example...

My friend said to me that the villain had no motivation. I said when has a Pokémon villain ever had good motivation? Mewtwo randomly acquiring God-like powers reminded me of the ending of the first movie where Pokémon tears randomly got the ability to bring people back to life and it was never seen again. The giant torterra were a ridiculous distraction...

The villain and his plot were a little weak and overblown. Additionally, it was at 67 percent earlier. The sidebar has it at 66 percent.

We'll see where it ends up. I can see why some critics don't like it.

It's not an "unoffensive" film in the sense that its openly weird.

I like Reynold's and all, but Danny DeVito voicing Pikachu would have busted my gut. That commercial someone edited with him doing the voice had me in stitches.

I'll catch it sometime next week. I'll be there wearing my Pokemon Yellow t-shirt with a group of pals looking to see a big piece of my childhood come to life.

Can someone let me know if there is a post-credit scene?

This movie works because Pikachu is adorable. That is literally the entire joke, and it only works because of Reynolds imo. Well that and how adorable the animation is.

The movie is so thinly written. I was actually surprised by how "bad" a lot of it was, while still enjoying it for the most part. It is one of those movies that works for one reason, and that one reason is extremely satisfying.

I think it worked on other levels. The other Pokemon made it worked. I also thought Justice Smith was very good in it and helped carried it.

He's about the only good "human" performance though. Even some more established actors (I'm not sure how public it is they are in the movie, so I won't say) just don't do a great job here. There's no bad acting from the main characters, but no stand outs other than Smith.

There's also an overwhelming sense of what could have been as they show glimpses of a more traditional Pokemon movie and its really, really good.

The other Pokemon are cute. But they do not carry the film and Justice Smith, like all the other human characters in the film, is a nonentity. Except for Psyduck, who is my new spirit animal. I have no issues with the performances in the film outside of the Charizard owner. The issue is the writing. As in there is very little.

This is a movie with 1 and half characters, and no plot. And Ryan somehow makes it work. I just know that watching it at home, I will be skipping the opening before the little guy gets there.

I was in love with the movie up until the first hologram, followed by the lab scenes and the enormous torterra. I got a bit bored in that segment, and then it picked up at the end

I enjoyed it throughout, even as I don't know if I'd say this is a good movie. I grew up with Pokemon, so it just had me with all the little things. Even the cringe exposition scenes that were so hilariously laid out, I thought I was being punk'd. This movie is really saved by the titular character. He makes it.

The holograms were the worst plot device, and even knowing now they were fake they robbed me of what I really wanted this movie to be. Think Veronica Mars - cheesy, noir fun - but with Pokemon. I'd have shaved 30 million off the budget and removed a lot of the spectacle.

I just got back from the film, and I personally loved it. That said, I’m willing to say -VisionsVison- up there has a good point. As a huge fan, every scene I was pouring over the details, looking for every reference and Easter egg, but if you aren’t as into it, there’s some slow moments. A lot of the middle goes by pretty slow after the film starts really fast. When they get to a certain place there is some good action, and the last 20 minutes imo were spectacular, but it does drag. Still, enjoyed it a lot, not sure if a sequel is in the cards but am really interested in those further films that are supposed to happen.

I generally liked it. The ending did work for me.

I'd say it's on the level of 1995 Mortal Kombat, but it's not the Iron Man of video game movies. The hype it's been getting from the clickbait websites has been way overhype.

Would you at least say its the Blade of videogame movies?
