Diamond List for July 22nd, 2009

Well, that's clearly not the case with this issue.

It's ASM #600. This is a special case. We're not going to do this all the time on ASM. TRUST ME! It took WAYYY too much hard work and FARRR too many late nights to pull this off. :)

I can see that. And as I said, if comics were still $3 accross the board and this came out I think I'd be willing to give it a shot. But there's already at least 1 other $4 comic out this week plus several from the past two weeks that I've not been able to afford. So due to those $4 comics sucking up an extra dollar each week, I don't have the extra $2 to spend on this issue. As I said before, it's not necessarilly the price of this one issue (because even someone as frustrated as me can see the benefits of this issue/to price), it's the principal of the price hikes accross the board.

Well you haven't seen this monster yet-- with 104 pages, no reprints, and a lead feature drawn by John Romita Jr.-- a lead that's close to TRIPLE length! (And 3 comics would cost $9!) And that's BEFORE you'd even get any of the back-ups... Including a 12 pager by STAN LEE! And MARCOS MARTIN!

I smell 'sales pitch opertunity' ;)

And it's quite good :)

Put this up against a 10th of a video game, a 1/2 of a movie ticket, or 5 song downloads on iTunes... And I think this is something a kid would spend their own money on. Or something that a parent would buy for their child. When I was a kid, my allowance was a quarter BECAUSE that was the price of a comic book. It's 34 years later, I know comics have gone up, but I'm pretty sure allowances have too. :)

No one told my mom that. I got a dollar and had to rub my mom's feet for twenty minutes to get the extra 50 cents to a dollar.

Stinkin' blackmailing parental cheapskate!

I'm not going to address your feelings about OMD. Like I said before, your feelings are your feelings, and if there's no changing that, that's cool. And I get that these are message boards and part of that is so that you can have a place to vent. But it's been 20 months now. Just saying.

Yeah, "get over it" I get it. But 20 months is a short time when something you grew to know and love has been defaced so dramatically and remains unrecognizable. To fans who read it back when it was like this the first time I'm sure it's a fine read but when I read it, it isn't Spider-Man anymore. If I want to read something unrecognizable I'll pick up some new book once a month instead of this 3 times a month :) Save myself $6.

The funny part (to me) about this paragraph is the fact that I had a harder time relating to Peter Parker during his marriage than the way it was before.

Just sayin'...

You people are 'Just Sayin'' a lot :)

I think I related to a married Peter better because I was looking for that when I was a kid and teenager because I didn't have that in my own home. Then I got married myself and now I see all the same jokes and things that my wife and I kid with each other about. And I absolutely LOVE references to Peter and MJ going to hang out with other married couples, such as The Sentry and Liddy (mentioned in the Sentry Reborn mini). Now he's just any other snot nosed single guy that has nothing to do with my life, therefor, I can't relate to him. I skipped the bachelor stage so there's nothing there for me to identify with. To me, he's no longer any differant from any of the other bazillion single characters out there. As I said before, the character I watched grow and advance over the years shouldn't suddenly be able to hang out and identify with the Slingers :)

JH getting to have a discussion with Dan Slott??!!??

Hah! Yeah, Mr. Slott's a good guy. We've had a few here and there. He's cool like that.

Honestly, his involvement in Spider-Man had me extatic through the foof until after I read the end of OMD. I hated dropping the book knowing he'd be writing on it but I just couldn't bare what the book was to become. I've even tried to go back twice (as you know) and New Ways to Die specifically because he wrote it. Sadly, I still couldn't tolerate what I saw (not that it wasn't good, it just wasn't Spidey to me anymore).

Yep, knowing Dan looks at our comments from time to time just makes me like him more and more. I just wish/pray that he'll come to the Emerald City Comic-Con one of these days. The 2009 Comic-Con was sooo much better than the 2008, as most Marvel writers/artists skipped the 2008; but, I got to meet some of my favorite ones last time, like Brubaker and Bendis. But, no Slott was probably the one I missed most. Generally, I try to limit myself to the number of comics I get signed to 2 or 3...but, for Slott, I think I'd have to bring a whole 5 comics!!!

I just looked at the website for next years...Terry Moore!!! Geoff Johns!!! OMG, I should get my comics ready right now! I'm already bringing that final, excellent issue of Strangers In Paradise! And, Echo!!! Both of those titles are so damn good, and it's a shame that so many people still haven't read them, even though they've been hyped like crazy in Wizard and other forums.

Please, Mr. Slott, Please...come to Seattle in 2010!!!

I'll have to talk my wife into letting me go to one of these things one of these days. I know I'd have a good time and I'd like to shake the hand of the people who've entertained me through the years.

And good call on Echo. Great new series.

I pretty much agree.

I'm sure the stories are good but I can't stand reading it knowing how we got to that point.

Same here.I've been getting back issues for my spidey fix.

I've bound nearly all of the Spidey years I enjoyed into my own hardback volumes so I just pull those out a couple times a week.

The red ones:

I get where you're coming from... we just grew up in different times with a different influence...

I was a pretty nerdy kid (as opposed to the nerdy adult I am today :csad: ), and single Peter Parker of the 70's/80's just kept on fighting in spite of his attempts to have a regular life and sacrificed said "normal life" because of his guilt driven responsibilities to be Spider-Man... and with all the adversity I faced in real life (bullies, needing to be accepted by peers, etc...), I could look at this young man who could NEVER have what he craved, and he still fought and tried in spite of all this... it made me want to try harder and face my personal crap... and truth be told, once he was going home to the super-model every night, it took that away because the idea that he could never be rewarded (yes, he would occasionally have a "good" ending... see ASM #99 & 150) for his sacrifice was moot because no matter how bad his life was (either his regular life taking a beating due to his being Spider-Man, or his Spider-Life being interfered with his regular Parker life), he had finally gotten the girl.

Now, as Spider-History has taught us, is the simple fact that the Spectre of Spider-Man will always come between Peter Parker and the woman he loves... be it Betty Brant, or Gwen Stacy, and finally, after a good 20 year run, with Mary Jane.

Yes, both MJ and Peter agreed to the deal, but ultimately, it was all due to the fact that Peter was Spider-Man that such a deal came into effect... thus proving, in spite of two decades, that the Spectre of Spider-Man finally came between Peter and Mary Jane.. the woman he loves.

It's an unfortunate dynamic, but it's one that will always happen...in my opinion.

Thanks for listening...

That and the Dark Lord of Evil.

Is that you being snippy now, hmmm?:o. If not, sorry, but I honestly don't even remember what wrote then. Says a lot about my memory:(

Yeah, but what's the point of that spectre coming between them if there's no repercussion to it? Yes, Peter lost MJ but he doesn't even know it and live moves on (or should I say, backwards). THere's no grief or anything that makes these human losses impactful. That's why I'd rather her have died than what we got. Chances are that if she died I'd have been sad but okay with it and would still be reading and enjoying the book to this day. That's a part of life... a storyline that goes against everything Peter Parker stands for, doing something that a 5 year old would know is stupid (sacreficing your wife and your future for a life that may end at anytime naturally), it's just rediculous... and the repercussions of THAT are just as ******ed... not to mention completley unrelatable to ANYONE.

I agree with you on the fact that OMD was an "out of character" stroy, but in the bigger picture, it simply was a "means to an end" for Marvel, and they went with it, and now they're not looking back at it... all the previous continuity still happened (if you're wondering about anything, I'll gladly explain stuff to you... like the lil'Normie/Liz stuff)...

And I guess if you want to get into "semantics", then there was repercussions to both Peter & MJ... they lost that "special love"... yes, unlike the death of Gwen, we don't get to see Peter feel his pain over the loss, but again... it was a means to an end... and unfortunately for the readers, we got OMD... there are probably a dozen ways that they could have started BND with Peter & MJ broken up with the status quo/new direction they chose, but what we got is what we got... did I like it? Of course not... but I'm enjoying the after effect, and I'm glad that Marvel is making efforts to tie everything into continuity, and bringing back stuff that we never thought we'd ever see again... like the name "Ben Reilly", a Kaine story, and good stories featuring the classic supporting cast.

Killing MJ could have been an option , but we've seen that before, and I like the idea of "keeping" the old cast members around...still makes it interesting, especially when we all know the histories between everybody... as well as the inclusion of some new people... Norah was a late comer into this era, but I really felt for her in that last page in ASM #599... she has some good potential, and again, this is just my personal opinion, mostly due to "when" Spidey was a major influence to me as a child, but ASM hasn't been this full of "life" in such a long time, I'd never thought I'd see the day... it saddens me that a fellow Spider-Fan like yourself, as well as others, can't get into it, but I like it... and I hope that others do as well... I won't judge people for they read and what they don't (too many bad childhood memories... "You like the Hulk? You should read Miller's DareDevil... you have bad tastes in comics!!!"), so I hope you can understand why I enjoy this new direction just as I understand your disdain for it... though I hope that maybe someday you can turn it around.

Cheers...

Mike

You and me both. I really miss enjoying the book, and even though I want to and have tried twice now, I guess 3 times with this new Ben Reilly story... I just can't.

But I've decided to stop complaining about it so much. While I want the book to fail so badly it isn't healthy, it's not fair to those of you who do enjoy it, or to Dan Slott since he is a fairly regular here, so I'm going to just suck it up. I'm still furious and I'm sure I'll whine here and there, but I'm going to try to keep it quiet for other people's sakes.

New York, NY, 6 PM - Dan Slott at Jim Hanley’s Universe

Writer Dan Slott stops by Jim Hanley’s Universe on 33rd Street for an anniversary party celebrating the 600th issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. There will be cake!

Basically, Dan Slott's visiting a famous New York comic shop across from the Empire State Building for ASM #600. I could maybe make it there but I am partisan. To be honest I flipped through the first issues of BND despite my misgivings about OMD and I was never interested to buy it outright. Slott's always a hoot but showing up might feel like raining on a parade. "I'm here to celebrate ASM #600 even though I haven't read ASM since 2007!" But, for anyone in the New York area who does read ASM, this is for you.

Yep, too bad that's true, because I would have enjoyed the cake if it existed

Why does everyone assume there won't be cake? :o
