The big issues (i.e. #25, 50, or 100) would many times be double-sized, and you could count on it being the ending of a big storyline that preceeded it. Now, if it's double-sized, the only double-sized is that they've added a classic reprint. (Even looking at last week's Giant-Sized Hulk...three very short stories with two reprints of the classic Hulk/Wolverine story, that's been reprinted a few times already. The old Giant-Sized books or annuals would actually have a double-sized story...IMAGINE THAT.) I still remember classic double-sized books, like Defenders #100, and how much I looked forward to those books coming out.

I definitely miss some things about comics that I used to read in the 80's. It's probably due to the pace at which current artists work. I doubt Marvel (or DC, for that matter) could afford to put two issues' worth of material into one issue without outright doubling the price or more. They're lucky if they can get 10 or 11 issues a year out of most of their artists, let alone wasting one of those issues by joining it with another for a double-sized issue. Which, granted, I understand. If it were a question of releasing a double-sized #1 and waiting an extra three or four weeks for #2 and just publishing a normal #1 followed a month later by a normal #2 and then another month later by a normal #3, I'd choose the latter too. Consistency should be a priority wherever they can get it in the comic industry right now.

To be fair, Johns does string you along a bit. The whole premise of Booster Gold's comic is that he's the behind-the-scenes hero, so that's kind of an ideal place to bring a guy who's supposed to be dead back without screwing everything up. Of course, everything still gets plenty screwed up.
