Dimension Films has acquired rights to remake the 1986 film, Short Circuit, reports Variety.
The original introduced Number 5, a robot built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon. It developed a conscience and a personality after being hit by lightning, and then needed the help of humans after it was targeted for destruction by its makers, once it became a peacenik.

S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who created the characters and wrote both "Short Circuit" films, have been hired to write the remake.

David Foster and Ryan E. Heppe will produce with John Hyde.

Good? Bad? Share the opinion below!

that's the stupidest thing that I've ever read.

NO ONE can replace Fisher Stevens or The Guttenberg.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's stupid to hire the writers who wrote the original only to write the remake.

I'll bet they're doing this because of WALL*E.

It's ridiculous. The original was great, I loved that movie as a kid. Now they're probably just going to drop in some CG Johnny 5 and it won't be nearly as good. :whatever:

News like this makes me wish that the writers strike would have continued for some time. Preferably a hundred years or so... ;) :p

To this day it amazes me that Fisher Stevens played that indian guy, thought he looked real convincing....

Or Ally Sheedy.

Speaking of Guttenberg, I was very disappointed when he was voted off Dancing with the Stars. I wanted him to win.

Johnny 5 is Alive!

Not sure if that's a good thing or not..

They should just make it a third film instaed of doing a remake, but don't out the number three in the title.

I didnt see this thread earlier and made a thread on it myself. I was just reading about this earlier this morning. I loved both of the original films and for years was wishing they would do a third one. But here we go with another remake film. I hope it does well it has the original writers from the first two films and who also created/wrote the tremors films S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. So hopefully it stays true to the originals. I do hope/wish the voice actor who did number 5/johnny 5 returns to be the voice and hopefully cameos by ally sheedy, Steve Guttenburg, fisher stevens and michael Mckean.

I'm probably alone on this...but I think it's a great idea and i'm actually excited for it. Especially considering they are bringing back the original writers who really KNOW the character.

I'm stoked...I really want to hear more.

they probably will hire Justin Long to do Johnny's voice.

ahhhh!

i don't really mind this. i loved the original movies, especially the second one, but they are obviously relics of the 80's, and really, besides the nostalgia factor, they are pure cheese.

i'm not thrilled to see a remake, but with the original writers behind it, it's a start, and i'll wait to see a bit more before i condemn the movie.

The worst that could happen is that it becomes a parody of its ownself. Instead of Johnny 5 rewiring the other robots to be like the 3 Stooges in the original he could rewire them to be gangster robots in the remake.:D

Eh, this is one remake that frankly I honestly can take or leave. I thought the original was O.K. at best back when it first came out, but now...well...if they forget all about that creepy dancing scene set to "More Than A Woman", they've won half the battle right there.

I dunno how many people will still be up for the whole "robot Pinocchio" motif, though.

I'll bet they're doing this because of WALL*E.

Which obviously was influenced by SHORT CIRCUIT. It's a vicious cycle.

I can't see how another SHORT CIRCUIT movie is a bad thing. On any level.

If this doesn't have Guttenburg then I'll pass on it.

I loved the original ones... i hope they don't mess up my childhood.

I was wondering if any one has heard any new developments reguarding the remake. I hope it is good and since series creators/writers are writing the remake it should hopefully turn out well. I mentioned this before too i believe hopefully they get johnny five's voice actor to return i would love to see him return.

Yea so i was just wondering if any one has heard any new news reguarding the remake.

i dont think johnny five would fit that well into todays mold .
