Discussion: Assisted Suicide

An Individual's Life doesn't belong to someone else but them. They should be able to do anything with that Life that they want, as long as it doesn't injure or take the life of another, or rob others of their Property or Liberty. If it doesn't affect any of those 3 things, what ever.

SuBe, your new avatar is very... tacky.

And not because it is the American flag. It's just... tackily designed. :csad:

Jman, I wanted to let you know that you really disappointed me in the Political Lounge for thinking that Red Lobster is good food, and Rich People eat there. Neither is true.

I dated a chick that worked at Red Lobster once....she would occasionally smell like crab....it didn't last long

The Red Lobster closest to me is always packed. I don't know if it's rich people that eat there but the place is quite popular.

I respect your opinion, but could you address the issues I brought up earlier in this thread?

Are you talking about doctor's being mandated to kill their patients if they request it? I'm sure there'd be specialists to see about that. Actually, in some cases doctor's aren't allowed already to help a patient. If the patient has a living will that has no heroic measures may be made to save their life, doctor's aren't allowed to intervene in the process of the patient dying at a certain point.

I did not say that Red Lobster is good food, nor did I say that rich people eat there. I say that there is money to be made there. I know of people who consider Red Lobster to be a "fancy" restaurant and spend a lot of money on a meal at Red Lobster.

In terms of restaurant takeover, Red Lobster would be the most financially viable.

Exactly. I haven't been to a Red Lobster in five years, but I have driven by the one closest to my home a few times in the past month and have noticed that the parking lot is always packed. I remember the menu being a bit pricey as well, so high attendance + high prices = money to be made.

I see it as:

Red Lobster = Assisted Suicides + Crappy Food

see what i did there? back on topic

I'm not gonna lie, I've always found Jack Kevorkian a fairly creepy individual....BUT I don't think he should have gone to prison, and I think terminally ill people should have the right to decide to end their life.

It's also worth noting that their families didn't think Kevorkian should have been jailed.

For the record, I am NOT for "Assisted Suicide" since suicide is never a good option. I am, however, for Human Euthanasia.

Basically, if you're sad, deal with it. If you're terminally ill, in constant pain and have a long time to die, then you'll be able to be put down.

Also, not being able to afford treatment shouldn't open up euthanasia as an option, for humans or other animals.

This is legal in Oregon, but you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to actually get it done. If I recall correctly, there's a "reflection period" of a couple to several months, just to make damn sure you're still on board when the time comes. They don't take the decision lightly.

Having watched my mom die of Cancer, and the pain that she went through, if she had wanted to go through with assisted suicide, I would have had no problem with that....

It was a horrible death, and the peace and comfort came with her death...

Had she been able to reach her medication she would have done it herself...

See what bothers me the most about assisted suicide being illegal in cases for terminally ill patients who are obviously suffering is that they would "pull the trigger" themselves if they could, but so often they can't or they are afraid they won't do it right. I'm all for a reflective period (similar to the Oregon law) and I would encourage any patient suffering to see a psychiatric doctor first, but when someone's time is up they deserve the right to go out with dignity.

A Right to Death seems to be the natural extension of a Right to Life. The same reason that a Right to Success is equal to the Right to Fail.

See, I don't understand why it should be for terminally ill patients.

If an American Woman can have the right to privacy to KILL a fetus, and has the right because its a part of her body and it can't live without her - then why can't an American Woman have the right to KILL herself..which is a part of her and can't live without her?

Since a Doctor is allowed to help assist the killing of the fetus, they should be able to help kill the woman.
The difference is that there is an arguement of when a person starts......the current stance of the law is at birth.....meaning that before that it's not "Killing" somebody. However,. the law states that somebody with the mind to want to die is alive, and that terminating their life is murder.
Therfore, your logic is flawed because your personal beliefs are not the law's.
(BTW, I believe that personhood begins at the end of the 1st trimester, but that's for the Abortion thread)

If you have a right to life then you also have a right to terminate that life.

Kevorkian was an angel of mercy in my opinion.

Anyone who has had to watch a loved one waste away slowly being consumed by disease will agree with me.

May he rest in peace. He did good work, and gladly, nobody was able to convince him otherwise.

If its a terminal patient, and they is no way around them dying I say let them go out in peace. Take, for example, extreme radiation poisoning. The skin dies and falls off, the organs liquefy, and you drown in your own fluids. There is no way to stop it. It is more humane to allow the person to kill themselves with a peaceful injection before all this misery begins than make them go through it. If they want the peaceful way out I say let them have it. It takes a pretty sick bastard to make someone go through that simply because their morals say its wrong.

People won't end the suffering of their loved ones but they'll end the suffering of murderers.

We are a strange species.

We are a selficious species. We can't stand to lose loved ones no matter their pain, but we will gladly kill those that we have no connection to.
