Juan Williams Fired By NPR After “Scared Of Muslims ” Statement

WASHINGTON (AP) — National Public Radio says it has terminated the contract of longtime news analyst Juan Williams after comments he made about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.

NPR said it had notified Williams that his contract was being severed. The statement says Williams’ remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

A phone message left for Williams at his home seeking comment was not immediately returned Thursday morning.

(Oct. 21) -- NPR has fired longtime news analyst Juan Williams after he told the Fox News Channel that he gets nervous when he sees Muslims on airplanes.

Williams appeared on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Monday, and host Bill O'Reilly asked him what he thought about the idea that America is facing a "Muslim dilemma." The Fox News personality caused a stir recently on ABC's "The View," when co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg walked off the set to protest his comments blaming Muslims for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
NPR Fires Analyst For Saying He's Scared of Muslims

Longtime NPR news analyst Juan Williams was fired because comments he made on Fox News "were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices," NPR said in a statement.

Williams said Monday he agreed with O'Reilly's statement that "jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet." The two also discussed political correctness, which Williams said could "lead to some kind of paralysis, where you don't address reality."

"Look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous," Williams said.

Late Wednesday, NPR issued a statement saying it had given Williams notice that his contract was being severed. "His remarks on 'The O'Reilly Factor' this past Monday were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR," the statement read, according to a story on NPR's website.

Williams told NPR that he's conferring with his wife about what's happened and that he's not ready to comment publicly.

Before working for NPR, Williams spent 21 years at The Washington Post as an editorial writer, op-ed columnist and White House reporter. He is the author of several books on civil rights in America and hosted NPR's flagship news call-in show, "Talk of the Nation," according to his bio on NPR's website.

But Williams' frequent appearances on "the largely conservative and often contentious prime-time talk shows of Fox News have long been a sore point with NPR News executives," the NPR website reported. Williams' title was recently changed from correspondent to analyst after he took clear-cut policy positions in TV appearances and in newspaper columns.

In February 2009, NPR asked that Williams stop being identified on "The O'Reilly Factor" as a "senior correspondent for NPR," even though that title was accurate at the time, The New York Times reported.

At the time, NPR ombudswoman Alicia C. Shepard called Williams a "lightning rod" because he "tends to speak one way on NPR and another on Fox." She told the Times that NPR received 378 listener e-mails in 2008 complaining about Williams.

Williams is only the latest high-profile media personality to lose a job over opinions aired on national radio or TV. Last month, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez was fired from the TV network for controversial remarks he made about Jews, the media and Comedy Central host Jon Stewart.

Maybe Juan and Helen can get together for a nice brunch.

I feel little bit sorry for Juan, but I think his comment was inappropriate and bit irresponsible. I wouldn't have fired him for that. Williams doesn't need NPR, he's got Fox News and his books to sell.

If not what were they then? Neocons?

Bush is a pro-corporate pro-religious-right big government neocon.

Nixon was pretty much center-left on domestic issues, even if he personally and privately favored conservative policies. He created many new federal agencies and implemented price controls (which he personally disagreed with) I remember famous quote him shouting "Milton Friedman ISN'T RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION!". That should tell you where Nixon stood. He was a pragmatic domestic liberal.

Ok, I'm curious. Both Roosevelts, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Clinton, Bush and Obama were all Progressives, right? Thats a pretty significant number of presidents in the 20th/21st centuries. So how come we arent living in the Soviet Union yet?

Progressives aren't socialists, and they aren't communists - they are fascists. (and I am not even sure I would put Kennedy in that list)

However you would be correct in saying that in spite of their fascist ideology, we are not in Mussolini's Italy. That can be attributed to the inherent American belief in liberty. I believe that the majority of Americans are libertarian, they just don't know anything about it.

When Woodrow Wilson enacted radical fascist policy duing WWI, American's made sure it was repealed after the conflict.

After FDR's massive expansion of government, the Republican Party made massive gains and were able to repeal most of the largest programs (such as the TVA and NRA).

Johnson's Administration massive government policies is what cost the Democratic Party the South. He is who got Nixon elected. The combination of policy between Johnson, Nixon and Carter created the Reagan Revolution.

The combined policies of Bush, Clinton, Bush and Obama has created the Tea Party.

American's resist statism.

Ok, I can agree that many people are untrusting of the federal government, but I wonder what your definition of fascism is. It was defined to me as a political system that takes root in countries with a large middle class and is based on fear of Communism. Minorities complain of of social and economic disparity and are persecuted as enemies of the state.

or fear of any other form of government...that everyone else is the enemy and any dissent is met with persecution

Why? That yesman just scored a million + dollar deal with Fox News.

I wrote that comment before that was announced (or at least before I heard it). Either way, NPR was disrespectful, I watched the clip on the site...you won't even let the guy come in office and talk and reconcile the issue. 10 years....he's made that station grow....and this is how you're treated.

It's good he got a better deal from Fox News. I do resent the notion he's a "yesman" because he has an independent centre-left viewpoint.

Here's where I think that NPR had a problem with it.
What he said in itself wasn't that bad. but he was empathetic to the Islamaphobia pogrom Fox has been running. He had been warned many times not to go on those opinion shows and delve into subjective or speculative discourse. Even though he said it was wrong to feel that way, by his own admission he gave it some sense of validation.

And what he said was illogical; That Muslims dressed in their attire scared him. If anything that should be reassuring. Terrorists aren't going to draw undue attention to themselves. Wearing a turban into an airport is just begging for extra scrutiny.

Remember the flack over Obama's grandmother when Obama wrote in his book that she was afraid of black men when she was younger and would cross to street to avoid them? Remember how Fox was all over this calling her a bigot and how outraged they were that Obama said that this was typical of a white woman her age? "How dare Obama call us all bigots!!!" was the meme.

Good for Juan that he found a new job with no ethical or objective restrictions. He's free to be what he wants and can quit living the lie of being an objective observer. It's going to be funny to see him embrace his inner wingnut.

But NPR had warned him about going on those opinion shows and delving into subjective and speculative discourse. And FoxNews Radio is a competitor of NPR. I think it was awfully lenient of them to allow him to work part time for a competitor in the first place. Much less give him several warnings before terminating him.

Sure he said that we shouldn't lump them all together. That it was wrong to do so. That his fear was irrational. But that information should have been between him and his psychiatrist.
Could you imagine if Chris Hansen said " You know, diddling underage girls is bad. It's horrible and no one should ever do it but....sometimes I fantasize about it"
That's a heavy handed example but along the same lines.

I didn't see anyone at Fox being upset when Helen Thomas,Rick Sanchez and that other girl who was fired over at CNN for speaking their mind.

Helen Thomas had it coming....she should have been gone long ago

Did you see the entire interview or just read his comment?

He, IMO, was simply stating how many Americans feel after 9/11. It is not something they would ever follow through on in anyway, it is simply a passing thought that crosses our minds as we get on long flights. I saw absolutely nothing inappropriate about it, ESPECIALLY when put into the entire context of what he said in the interview.

The fact that NPR allowed this to pass...????

I have been a listener of NPR for close to 2 decades, and have contributed for the last 10 years......they will get nothing from me, and the teachers I know have all written our representatives to get funding pulled.

They get money from ****ing liberal Soros???????? and say they are unbiased in this decision. BULL ****..... this CEO is an idiot and showed it in her comments after all of this happened.

BTW, the reporter in the above video....STILL WORKS FOR NPR.

Even if state and federal funding is pulled, it won't hurt them much.

lmao, are you kidding? really?

Air America ring a bell?

It is hard to know how much exactly comes from government funding which is primarily through the CPB....it makes so many twists and turns, it is hard to follow.

Stations receive anywhere from 10% of their budget to upwards of 70% from CPB depending on their location, urban, rural, minority communities etc.

Also, that doesn't include state government funding, funding from state universities, and government grants given.

I guess Soros could buy NPR, that would keep it afloat.

I wonder if the NAACP will go after NPR?

Haven't heard from either of them....or the NAACP.

Well I work for NPR and if I went on the air and told everyone that every time I get on the bus and see a black person I put my hand on my bag because I feel nervous, I'd probably get fired.

Where are all these Libertarians who claim that a boss can fire you for whatever reason they want too? Are you absent from this argument because it's NPR?

And if the funding gets cut, guess what happens? I might lose MY job. Is that really smart to start firing people during a recession? :o

Anywho, if this is the talking point that cuts funding from NPR then it's a sad day. Enjoy you're Splendid Table, Prairie Home Companion, and Car Talk while you can because pretty soon all we'll have is Rush, Glenn, and Sean.

:doom: :doom: :doom:

Not if you were a liberal in every one of your statements....not if you stayed away from Fox, or while on Fox disagreed with 99% of the conservatives on the panels you sit on. Not if you are a yes man to Soros regime.

You would probably keep your job forever....

Hope you don't answer the phone for NPR....I hear they are having a rough time.

Sorry, but I'm very picky as to where my tax dollars go, and if this is the direction that NPR wants to take so be it, but not with my money. I've been a proponent for NPR for many years, even came to their defense here on this forum. No more.....

I agree it was prolly a pretext to get him out but I just don't see where this issue should bring up cutting the limited funding NPR gets.

As for calls... I got this email.

Please do not engage with potential flustered callers today, should you get any. Additionally, try to avoid upset folks in person as well.

Should you field a call or visitor in relation to NPR’s firing of Juan Williams, please pass that person along to me. (Remember, flash, 5846, flash again. Or flash, 5846, hangup.) If I’m busy or out, sent the call/person to Kevin.

I appreciate you working with us through this.

Someone on NPR said that they were disappointed that it happened during the pledge drive....I'll have to look for it, I can't remember who made the comment.

NPR is funded by (depending on where) state and federal funding, if they are going to take funding from someone like Soros that is fine, but not my tax money at the same time.

Cut the funding......of one or the other. Give Soros his money back and tell him to move on. *smiles*
