Discussion: Global Warming, Emission Standards, and Other Environmental Issues

What is your opinion of climate change?

  • Yes it is real and humanity is causing it.

  • Yes it is real but part of a natural cycle.

  • It is real but is both man made and a natural cycle.

  • It's a complete scam made to make money.

  • I dont know or care.

"Environmentalists say ice melt is being caused by global warming with Arctic temperatures in the 1990s reaching their warmest level of any decade in at least 2,000 years, according to a study published in 2009."

I didn't know we've been recording accurate temperatures for 2,000 years :whatever:

Core samples... look it up.

I'll just point out...

that $20 billion escrow fund/commie, socialist, Marxist slush-fund, gangster-Chicago style shakedown/whatever the right says looks REAL GOOD right about now.

The well is capped and 24-hour news media has moved on. It is no longer a front page story. And lo and behold the Oil Regulation Bill that was in response to the crisis has collapsed. Despite having bipartisan support when it passed the House and seeming to be a populist issue, Republicans--and a few choice Democrats like Mary Landrieu and Jeff Bingaman--have most likely killed it in the Senate. Government action to the oil spill died along with the spill.

And given that BP's lawyers are gearing upt to fight any claims in the future and the GOP has successfully killed the unlimited liability cap in the Senate...the WH securing $20 billion from BP when populist outrage wasn't on page 9 seems like a good thing. Maybe Obama ain't all evil after all. Kind of like his "socialist take over" of GM has saved a company and 1 million jobs. But nothing but crickets when something like this in retrospect works.

According to the AP, new guidelines set to go into place could rule out alot of oil claims. The first set of guidelines involves a claimant's proximity to the Gulf Coast. The second set of guidelines would require that businesses and individuals seeking to recover long-term damages through the claims process abandon their right to sue BP.

Saving 1 million jobs at the expense of more than 1 million jobs elsewhere. Possibly 2-5 million jobs destroyed.

On that related note, did you pay attention the gdp output of the stimulus? It had a multiplier of 0.8, every dollar it spent it put out about 80 cents in GDP spending. That's right, you lose 20 cents on every dollar. The underlying theory? It should give a multiplier of 1.4 GDP output, that's the government/krugman/keynes justification. You are actually losing tax money in your own theory and internal logic. And the numbers are probably padded up to look good. That's right he destroyed jobs by destroying capital.

And BTW, half the escrow account is payed in taxpayer money. 9 billion in tax credits FTW. At least a "gangster style shake down" does not involve taxpayer paying for someone's ineptitude. Obama manage to even fail that.

When Obama said he would do the whole Change thing, he probably meant that's how much money we will have in pockets after he is done. That's about the only thing that makes any sense now, the way he is blowing money out of his ass :awesome:

We can't solve all the world's problems. Even when we try, we are still despised on the world stage.

The US will help, not much can be done while the disaster is still happening.

Why should we care about Pakistan? We have our own issues.

I mean do you really want to play the "American's don't care enough about the rest of the world card" when we are the best in the world at humanitarian efforts and disaster relief donations? Look at Haiti. Look at what we did for the tsunami. Look at everything we do in Africa.

America spends way too much on international charity.

We have a, what, $13 trillion deficit?

We are in no position to be throwing millions around left and right on other countries.

I'm sorry for the people in Pakistan for the flood and other reasons, but frankly, our own country should come first.

I agree, after watching the coverage on Katrina, brought back a lot of anger.... I'm all for helping other countries, and in most cases, the money we are sending is already been allocated to be spent in that manner....BUT, when I see what still needs to be done on the coast after Katrina, I wonder why we are not allocating that money to rebuild areas devastated in our own country.

And also it's a Muslim nation and I'm sure the Tea Party would flip a ****.

I heard somewhere (not Fox News :oldrazz: It may have been NBC) that says the Taliban is chomping at the bit to give Pakistanis the aid they need, so they'll gather even more supporters there. In a way, the US giving aid before the Taliban do is going to help the anti-terrorist effort because if the Taliban gain a foothold in that community, it'll make our job in Afghanistan THAT much harder.

It would have been easier not to get involved at all, but it's hard to cut loose when you've already invested so much. :o

BREAKING NEWS! ANOTHER OIL RIG EXPLODES IN THE GULF
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/0...ter-oil-rig-accident-in-gulf/?hpt=T1&iref=BN1

Here we go again?

Hopefully they take care of this in a more timely manner, if it is anything to worry about that it.

I just read that a mile long oil sheen is starting.
 indeed.

Hopefully it'll be easier to fix, though. No word on whether the rig was located on water as deep as in Deepwater Horizon.

And if Deepwater Horizon wasn't enough of a sign, the rig contractors really should be being making every employee's life miserable with safety checks. :o This is just pathetic. At least nobody died.

It's being said that the new rig explosion is located around 100 miles off the Louisiana coast...so I would imagine its in some fairly deep waters.
