Discussion: Global Warming, Emission Standards, and Other Environmental Issues

What is your opinion of climate change?

  • Yes it is real and humanity is causing it.

  • Yes it is real but part of a natural cycle.

  • It is real but is both man made and a natural cycle.

  • It's a complete scam made to make money.

  • I dont know or care.

The government is not allowing anyone that doesn't go through a ridiculous 40 hour hazmat class to help with the oil clean up, in spite of the fact that the weathered oil (which is the oil that washes up on shore) is allegedly non-toxic. The government isn't allowing us to accept foreign aid from governments like the Dutch, because of some ridiculously inane LABOR UNION law.

It's impossible to defend the government's actions without looking foolish.

Do you have any legitimate links to back up these accusations?

Funny you mention that...

No "legitimate" source is reporting on ANY of the real crisis stuff going on down there. I haven't seen one "legitimate" news source report on the fact that clean-up crew members are dying.

See, that's the thing...the truth is hidden by the "legitimate" press...so eye witness testimonies are ignored and called crazy conspiracies because the "legitimate" news sources simply cover for BP.

However...there are tons of news stories on clean up crew not being allowed to wear air filtration masks...including CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/05/31/oil.spill.order/index.html

CNN focused their story on them "not providing" masks...though it does mention accusations that workers will be fired if they wear them

Regarding the coast Guard refusing to allow Louisiana to clean up the spill...seriously...you REALLY have been ignoring this story so much that you aren't aware of that?

Here's an ABC news story that mentions that the Coast Guard stopped a clean up crew and forced them back to Louisiana. Jindal is upset about it. I'm shocked that you havent heard about it. Was it at violent gun point? Eh...maybe not...but the point is they were ORDERED to go back to port...because cleaning up oil is not something we want to do.

http://abcnews.go.com/story?id=10946379

As far as cops stopping people at the behest of BP...I havent seen it anywhere "legitimate", though one instance of this is on video...and the police officer in the tape forces a citizen to leave the area (even though it is not on BP property) because as the police explained "BP doesnt want anyone to film". So...I guess if you dont think that video evidence of a police officers words are "legitimate" then yeah...who can trust video and audio evidence though? That's crazy conspiracy talk!

I really don't appreciate the tone Heretic. I was asking you a simple question. I have heard of the banning of cameras in certain areas and Jindal being told not to protect his own beach. I genuinely have not heard of the other claims you stated.

It has been a somewhat interesting year. Oil Spill, the Sun is acting up & this year started out with lots of Tornado's. I wonder whats next

Extreme heat wave sets all-time high temperature records in Africa and Middle East
A withering heat wave of unprecedented intensity and areal covered has smashed all-time high temperatures in four nations in the Middle East and Africa over the past week. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Chad, and Niger all set new records for their hottest temperatures of all time, and several other Middle East nations came within a degree of their hottest temperatures ever. The heat was the most intense in Iraq, which had its hottest day in history on June 14, 2010, when the mercury hit 52.0°C (125.6°F) in Basra. Iraq's previous record was 51.7°C (125.1°F) set August 8, 1937, in Ash Shu'aybah. It was also incredibly hot in Saudi Arabia, which had its hottest temperature ever on Tuesday (June 22): 52.0°C (125.6°F), measured in Jeddah, the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. The previous record was 51.7°C (125.1°F), at Abqaiq, date unknown. The record heat was accompanied by a sandstorm, which caused eight power plants to go offline, resulting in blackouts to several Saudi cities.

In Africa, Chad had its hottest day in history on Tuesday (June 22), when the temperature reached 47.6°C (117.7°F) at Faya. The previous record was 47.4°C (117.3°F) at Faya on June 3 and June 9, 1961. Niger tied its record for hottest day in history on Tuesday (June 22), when the temperature reached 47.1°C (116.8°F) at Bilma. That record stood for just one day, as Bilma broke the record again on Wednesday (June 23), when the mercury topped out at 48.2°C (118.8°F). The previous record was 47.1°C on May 24, 1998, also at Bilma.

Three countries came within a degree of their all time hottest temperature on record during the heat wave. Bahrain had its hottest June temperature ever, 46.9°C, on June 20, missing the all-time record of 47.5°C (117.5°F), set July 14, 2000. Temperatures in Quatar reached 48.8°C (119.8°F) on June 20. Quatar's all-time record hottest temperature was 49.6°C (121.3°F) set on July 9, 2000. It was also very hot in Kuwait, with temperatures reaching 51°C (123.8°F) in the capital on June 15. Kuwait's all-time hottest temperature was 51.9°C (125.4°F), on July 27,2007, at Abdaly. According to Essa Ramadan, a Kuwaiti meteorologist from Civil Aviation, Matrabah, Kuwait smashed this record and had Asia's hottest temperature in history on June 15 this year, when the mercury hit 54.0°C (129.2°F). However, data from this station is notoriously bad, and each year bogus record highs have to be corrected, according to an email I received from weather record researcher Maximiliano Herrera. Asia's hottest temperature in history will very likely remain the 53.5°C (128.3°F) recorded at MohenjuDaro, Pakistan on May 26 this year.

Commentary
We've now had six countries in Asia and Africa that have beaten their all-time hottest temperature record during the past two months. As I discussed in my blog about Pakistan's May 26 record, Southeast Asia also had its all-time hottest temperature in May, when the mercury hit 47°C (116.6°F) in Myinmu, Myanmar on May 12. All of these records are unofficial, and will need to be certified by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). According to Chris Burt, author of Extreme Weather, setting four national heat records in one month is not unprecedented--in August 2003, five countries (the UK, France, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein) all broke their all-time heat records during that year's notorious summer heat wave. Fortunately, the residents of the countries affected by this week's heat wave are more adapted to extreme high temperatures, and we are not seeing the kind of death tolls experienced during the 2003 European heat wave (30,000 killed.) This week's heat wave in Africa and the Middle East is partially a consequence of the fact that Earth has now seen three straight months with its warmest temperatures on record, according to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. It will be interesting to see if the demise of El Niño in May will keep June from becoming the globe's fourth straight warmest month on record.

Sorry about the tone. I really can't blame you for not hearing about a lot of it since the media doesn't seem at all interested in reporting it.

CEOs sold half their stock before the blast occurred...and the media doesnt see that as a worthwhile story.

BP admits that someone tampered with safety features immediately before the blast...and are refusing to explain who, what or why that happened...and the media doesnt care.

Tons of deadly chemicals are spewing out and onto the land and people are dying...and the media doesnt seem to think that is an important part of the story.

BP has been given ownership of the police, Coast Guard, and dictatorial powers over the media...and no one seems to care.

I smell an oil covered rat. There should be massive arrests made in this case as the evidence shows foreknowledge, and possible an intentional attempt to destroy the coast land.

I actually did hear about some selling off stock before this happened, but I had not heard that there was any 'tampering' with safety features. What I have consistently heard is that cutting corners and being lax on equipment checks are what caused this.

As far as the 'people are dying comment', there has only been two people that have died. One reportedly committed suicide, the other drowned.

You know...when Bush was president, all I heard about was the evil Halliburton...but nowhere am I seeing it reported that Halliburton were responsible for the safety of this rig. They bought the company that was contracted to handle it shortly before all heck broke loose. Where are all the stories blaming Halliburton?????

According to BP's own report...they did all the shortcuts, despite the fact that workers were screaming that it would cause an explosion...and then the final fail-safe was "tampered with" and no further info on that has been provided (or even asked for by anyone).

Are you crazy? Just google it....it's all over the place.

Apparently you don't read the Wall Street Journal they did a story on this back on April 30th.

Huffington Post
CBS News
LA Times
Blogs all over the place
Industry.bnet
Wall Streen Journal

UK news has it everywhere

See what you did there. My statements were challenged and I was asked to provide "legitimate" sources. Therefore, my remarks on the media were specifically pointed towards the "major" news sources...Fox News being the biggest. When scanning Fox News, CNN etc, I have yet to see a report on Halliburton.

So, while those criticizing me needed me to provide "legitimate" sources...my statement merely required me not seeing any in the major coverage of the events.

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about, but ok....and apparently you don't watch Greta Van Susteran on Fox because in an interview she did with Representative Stupak about the oil spill they Halburton was a part of that conversation on May 14th.

I watch that Van Susteran guy. Unfortunately, he puts me to sleep within the first 10 minutes.

Well, at least you are consistent with not needing proof.....

Carry on then....

Carry on then....

Every time I come to the politics forum I hear "heretic never posts proof. Heretic never posts links supporting his opinion". Then I post outright proof backing me up 100%. Then the person changes the argument for a few pages before they revert back to "heretic doesnt post proof"

Just do me the favor of admitting that you are a troll and lets move on.

And for the record...I'm the one who said I havent seen proof...you claim not to need any...so in this joking discussion, I have a higher standard of proof than you do.

Still just a big mess of gunk, hope they can get rid of all that junk......

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA................................ *sighs*

I notice that you intentionally left this part out of your little excerpt:

The department says one area where sand is being dredged is a sensitive section of the Chandeleur Islands, and the state failed to meet an extended deadline to install pipe that would draw sand from a less-endangered area.

I'm reminded of the exclusion of the word "endangered" from your Arizona/Squirrel thread. :whatever:

I like all squirrels, endangered or not...

As far as the squirrel thing, hell as much as is being spent on far more stupid things, like airports that no one uses.....not a big deal to me that a few million are being spent on the little critters.
