Discussion: Voting Rights and Election Law

A Texas appeals court has thrown out a five-year prison sentence for Crystal Mason, a Texas woman who was sentenced for trying to cast a provisional ballot in the 2016 presidential election that was rejected.

Mason, now 49, attempted to vote in Fort Worth in the 2016 even though she was ineligible because she was still on supervised release – which is like probation – for a tax felony. She has always maintained she had no idea she was ineligible and only tried to cast a ballot because her mother urged her to.
Although Mason was not particularly involved in politics before her case, she has since become much more engaged in raising awareness about voting rights. In 2022, she opened a rally for Beto O'Rourke.

A Woodbury County woman found guilty of over 50 counts of voter fraud has received her sentence.
Prosecutors say it was all in an effort to get her [Republican] husband, Jeremy Taylor, elected. Of course, Jeremy Taylor was ultimately elected to the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, though he doesn’t face any charges of his own.
The judge added that a downward variance, that's sentencing her to less than the guidelines, was warranted because of mitigating evidence, including her lack of criminal record, the good she's done for the community, and her caretaking role to her multiple kids.

The judge adding Kim Taylor is unlikely to re-offend, because now that she's a convicted felon, she won't be able to vote.
This judge whined about Biden who has nothing to with anything here in giving out less than the guidelines.
