The US private security contractor, DynCorp International charged with training the Afghan Police was using US Tax Payer Dollars to run a sex slave ring involving young boys as young as 8 years old. When this sickening debacle was discovered by journalists, the Afghan Interior Minister asked the US State Department to cover up the story, which they happily did. To my understanding, no action has been taken against the company and while US govt has have decided against overseeing DynCorps operations seeing as it was not "legally possible under the DynCorp contract."

It's something like only 2% leaked I believe.

Yes, something like a 25 key encryption uploaded to torrent sites like piratebay.
If something happens to him, it's gets unlocked. So even if he or wikileaks are buggered, it's still out there.

Teh thing too is Assange is talking about releasing crucial information if he gets killed, which hes going to do some day anyways so its not as strong a threat as he thinks if his intent is to threaten the US and others through blackmail for the rest of his life. I bet the US and any anyone that has something to hide is plotting to secure the info first and then eliminate assange and his associates. Hes a dead man walking.

Assanges internet supporters are not realizing that all this guy is doing is giving ammo for those who want to privatize and kill anonymity for a new Internet model.

Which is why I'm inclined to believe that is the real driving force behind all this. Because there are tons and tons of whistleblowers that have been silenced one way or another concerning just as controversial topics and organizations and you never even know they exist. The mainstream media almost never picks up their story. Especially not in the kind of coverge Wikileaks is getting.

It seems Assange is being shown as the problem in the oft used Problem-Reaction-Solution formula that governments has used forever basically. Give him the limelight show him to be a problem, a threat. Let the public react accordingly and have them demand a solution so that this would never happen again. Sound familiar? The solution is to get new laws written up overnight in accordance to what the people fear, whether its real or not. Print media and mainstream television media are completely under control. The internet, however, is not.

The last possible location of any kind of potential unaltered news, free of corruption. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what this was all about.

If you are referring to the fact that print media is owned by corporate industries, than you are somewhat right about self-ceonsorship. However, corporate ownership is not the same thing as government regulated or government censor, though some conspiracy theorists will doubtlessly purport just that.

We could see tighter espionage laws because of this, who knows. But the Supreme Court has already ruled that the Internet enjoys the same amount of freedom as print media--i.e. no restrictions beyond threatening actual violence or commiting crimes with it (hacking, distribution of illegal material, the most disturbing forms of pornography, etc.).

However, could the government use Wikileaks as an excuse for their broadband policies coming down the pipeline? That is a stretch.

I was merely commenting on print media is completely free, from the government at least.

I think it's great when responsible people blow the whistle on things that are a true violation of even the most basic of morality and ethics, like this story and a few others, but Wikileaks' approach is that there should be no secrets in the world, and that's just plain not how the world can operate. Some things in the military need to be kept secret for safety reasons, even though there are also crimes that need to be known by the public so that we can hold those responsible accountable for their actions. It's in situations like that that a responsible person should take the story to the press, who are supposed to hold the government accountable by keeping the citizens informed of its activities.

We do not need people like Assange, though, who encourage people to leak to him whatever it is that people aren't supposed to know and then gleefully publishes it on his website. No matter what it is, as long as it's classified information it's fair game for distribution to the masses. He has zero responsibility and zero accountability, and that makes him as bad as the corrupt forces within the government that he claims he's an antidote for.

Once again, I have to point out that many of wikileaks founding members are/were Chinese dissidents. The group has been operating since 2006 and primarily targetted China, though they also leaked/hacked and released info about Burmese, Kenyan, Sudanese, Iranian, etc. govts. Yes, they haven't done much with respect to Russia, but they've been operating in countries not exactly known for respecting human rights and allowing dissent for the last few years.

Of course, the masses didn't pay attention until this summer when they started releasing documents from the Afghan and Iraq wars.

I'm going to try this again:

I might not necessarily agree with the actions taken by wikileaks, but they do perform a very valuable function when it comes to exposing corruption in countries like China. Before the Afghan/Iraq war diary exposure, a huge part of their operations were based on exposing various dirt on the Chinese government.

so, I tried to ask this before, but are things like Wikileaks only 'bad' when they expose secrets of the 'good' countries? What if they exposed some kind of plot like Operation Northwoods, to use an example that craigdbfan mentioned in another thread.

Have people calling for this guy's head ever viewed Wikileaks before they started exposing info from 'good' countries? I think the tune would be much different if they knew how much corruption and other bad **** has been dug up because of people at Wikileaks.
