Re: Hans -

I'm not so sure Hans' plan would have worked anyway. If Anna and Elsa had both died, wouldn't the throne go to the next living blood relative, not the spouse of the queen or princess? At best he'd be a prince consort or something.

It was assumed there were no more.

I think it's funny in retrospect how Hans says, "I've been searching my whole life to find my own place." and "With you I've found my place, and it's nothin' like I've ever known before." during "Love is an Open Door", he's literally just talking about Arrendelle and not Anna at all. He even turns and points toward the kingdom as he sings that first line. So funny. It's actually more enjoyable to re-watch just to notice Hans' little underhanded mannerisms and words. Like when he calls Anna ordinary and then quickly takes it back so she's not offended. :funny:

And when Kristoff is singing "Reindeer Are Better Than People", he says "People will beat you and curse you and cheat you." I know he's talking about the shop keeper when he says "cheat you", but could the other lines be hinting at his harsh life as a kid with parents? Maybe they were bad people, so he ran away as a little boy and found Sven and eventually the trolls. Or of course, he could just be talking about general past experiences he's had with other people in his life. Meh, maybe I'm reading waaaaay too much into it. I'm bored.

I totally missed that about Hans. I'll have to pay attention to that when I watch it again.

And that's what I love about these films......you always notice something new each time you watch them!

as for Kristoff, I was just taking that to mean he had bad experiences with people in general............that's why he prefers the company of Sven and is not really close to anyone ( until he meets Anna, of course ).

Hans

also planned on winning the popular/public support of the kingdom, first by being the grieving widower of Princess Anna and second by being the "hero of Arendelle" by killing Elsa and stopping the eternal winter.

Yeah, I was probably looking too much into the Reindeer song. :funny:

speaking of Kristoff, I saw some tweets online by the director hinting that maybe on the DVD we'll get to hear more of Kristoff singing.

I did find it kind of odd that Kristoff didn't have much of a singing role, especially considering his voice actor is a Glee actor ( I think ).

The Reindeer song is so short...........

and he never did get a love song duet with Anna. :(

[BLACKOUT]******* Hans!!! He stole Kristoff's duet with Anna!! [/BLACKOUT] :cmad:

I see Disney released the Let It Go clip online officially. It's a pretty powerful ballad, so I see why.

"Here I STAND *stomps down emitting ice*"
"And HERE I STAAAAAAAYYYYYYY"

:o

oh, and here's some trivia as reported on the source of all Disney knowledge.......the Disney Wiki.......lol

Apparently, the plan was to have Elsa create an entire army of menacing snowmen like Marshmallow. Olaf was the first snowman guard she created, but she rejected him because he was too imperfect and sooooooooo not menacing enough.

I guess Elsa soon loses control of the army, as they prove too effective in protecting her and start attacking the Kingdom, which is not what Elsa wanted.

I actually remember them talking about this when details of the plot started coming out.

I also remember that an early synopsis made mention of a prophecy that a sorceress would curse the kingdom to eternal winter, and that's one reason why Elsa was so afraid of letting people know she had powers.

Both of those plot points would have been interesting, perhaps making the story more "epic" as some seem to want.

However, I was fine with what we got storywise. By taking out the "grander/more epic" components, it felt more like a character driven story.

Just saw this tonight. Really enjoyed it. One of the best films of the year. :)

So now that most have seen the film, do you guys think the Lopez's are the new Ashman and Menken?

:woot:

It really was the best film of the year for me, even beating out MOS.

I think the Lopez's would need a few more films and songs under their belts first before we can really compare.

I certainly loved the work they did on Frozen, though.

Let me narrow the scope then. Compared to Mermaid?

Let me narrow the scope then. Compared to Mermaid?

it's hard to say.........and hard to compare. I think it really comes down to personal taste.

Compared to the songs in Mermaid, I'd say the songs ( most of them ) in Frozen have a more "mature" feel to them.......if that makes sense.

The songs in Mermaid seem more "whimsical" in comparison, I guess?

As for which is better, I don't know. I mean.......I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "Part of Your World." The rest of the Mermaid songs I like but not on the same level.

Same with B+B, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "Beauty and the Beast" and like the rest of the songs.

The songs in Frozen felt like "dialogue extensions." like they continue the story but in song form. I guess you could say that's also true with Mermaid and B+B, but the songs felt more "natural" or organic in Frozen............

does that make any sense?

I get what you're saying. The songs progressed the story in a more natural way than B&B and Mermaid, and have the lyrics have a mature tone compared to the child-like whimsical nature of the efforts of Menken and Ashman, especially on Mermaid.

I wouldn't say that the songs progressed the story in a more natural way. It's just that they made the songs sound more like actual conversations than the other movies did, and it was a different kind of flow.

yeah.......that's what I'm trying to say.

Look at the Reprise of First Time in Forever. Look how the dialogue just flows right into the song seamlessly. and the way Anna and Elsa sing the song is more like talking in a "sing-song" way.

Or Love is An Open Door. It's sung as a conversation.

and "collectively" I'd say I enjoyed all of the Frozen songs. whereas with other films like Mermaid, B+B, Aladdin, LK, Tangled, etc., I really only enjoy 1 or 2 songs ( usually the big/main song ).

it's just........hard to compare, though. just like asking which film is "better."

the films, and music/songs, have different tones and styles. I can't really compare Frozen to, say, B+B and Tangled, because the latter are love stories, while Frozen really isn't.

You said it better. Dialogue was the word I was looking for, but it didn't come to mind. And I posted that before seeing your post, so perhaps reading beforehand would've helped me.

1 or 2 songs--Whaaaat?! :wow: You crazy, MidKnight. :funny:

actually, I think I should have said that I really LOVE 1 or 2 songs from each of those other films, while I enjoy the rest of the songs.

Mermaid - Part of Your World / Kiss The Girl
B+B - Beauty and the Beast / Belle
Aladdin - Whole New World
LK - Can You Feel The Love Tonight / Circle of Life
Hunchback - God Help The Outcasts / Someday
Hercules - Go The Distance
Mulan - Reflection
Tarzan - You'll Be In My Heart
Tangled - I See The Light

and out of all those, Beauty and the Beast is at the top, hands down, as really nothing can come close to that song.

I actually agree. That song was a masterpiece. Ever just the same, ever a SURPRISE!

So now that most have seen the film, do you guys think the Lopez's are the new Ashman and Menken?

Way too early to say. Menken and Ashman did three (or 2.5) amazing musicals at Disney back-to-back-to-back. Also, I get the sense that Ashman had a heavy, heavy hand in the entire creative process of The Little Mermaid and, to a lesser extent (for obvious reasons), Aladdin. And also, I don't think there is a "Under the Sea" or "Be Our Guest" styled showstopper in Frozen.

With all that said, the Lopezs did a fantastic job and I hope they do more Disney musicals, building and establishing their brand. Because I do think this is the best Disney musical since The Lion King, and that includes many other later Menken works in the ensuing years.

Lyrically, I feel like these songs could give the Menken/Ashman songs a run for their money, but musically, those classics just had a magic that nothing can match for me. I'm fully aware that nostalgia is probably a major factor in that opinion, lol.

While the Lopez's music was great in this movie, I hope to see Menken doing the next Disney musical.
