I've just caught up with this thread and see a lot of people saying they were disappointed at how 'over hyped' it was. I didn't see or hear any hype leading up to this film, I only went to see it coz a friend recommended it, otherwise I didn't really see any hype at all. Is this not the case in the U.S.?
And I'm a little confused how people can lower their opinions on a film solely because it didn't live up to expectations created by other viewers. I think that's a bit unfair. If you want to give a fair and uninfluenced rating of a film I don't think you should take into account whether it was as good as someone on the net or news or whatever said.
That's just my opinion anyway.

well before the film came out everyone knows they have to watch it one way or another
i think it was when everyone saw it on opening day the hype started to grow, i think its word of mouth on steroids
i watched it the day it came out and i was amazed and i got to see it again the next day

More power to District 9 really. Nigerians are only going to be more curious to watch the movie because of this.

I really doubt that Neill was being racist or trying to throw any dirt on Nigerians. He was just depicting/interpreting the realities of SA.

How would you know that? You can read Nigerians minds?

That doesn't really justify it. How would you feel if some countries over seas portrayed white americans as pedophiles and rapists and the viewers of the movies said "they can't deny that some of their people are like that."

I can understand why Nigerians would get offended by the way they were portrayed. This isn't the first time we've seen this. Africans in general are always portrayed as savages. Like that woman said, in District 9 Nigerians were portrayed as criminals, cannibals, and their women were practicing bestiality. And not to mention the Nigerian leader was mentioned as the leader of the gang.

Again. That doesn't justify portraying a certain nationality as savages.

How often does Hollywood put Nigerians into a movie and portray them positively? Believe it or not people are gonna see this movie and see those Nigerians as representatives of all Nigerians. This happens all time in america. When people see a black person being negative they view them as representing all black americans.

agreed , to this day i still don't know why people are using the word over hyped. This movie had slim marketing, and you had no idea what the story was going to be about after watching a confusing but cool trailer. All movie threads you'll find people who loved it , hated it, or just thought it was "meh", truly is unfair to say it was over hyped

I'd like it a lot because I am English and dont really like many americans, no matter what ethnic origin they come from t:.

sorry kinda off topic, but i was curious on why soo many people are making a big deal out of Avatar? i heard the budget is like $300 mill (i wonder what Blomkamp would do with that kind of money t. Is it based off video game? Book? what's so special about it?

damn looks insane, in a good way , can't wait to check it out

This is easily one of the sharpest pieces of science fiction I have seen in a long ass time. It's a crazy social allegory with excellent special effects. The set up was great too, it seemed like Blomkamp used a combination of real archival footage mingled with fake news sound bytes. I was also very impressed with the "prawns". At first glance, they look scary, they have claws and creepy mouths. Yet, they also have humanoid eyes, a factor that i thought was really exploited in the end. This film was great because it had me on the edge of my seat. Even though much of what happens in District 9 is genre cliche, a few simple changes in the formula reinvent the whole picture. This is definitely a must see movie and I give it 9/10.

Note: Neil Blomkamp went to VFS, I'll be going there next year :P

I gave it 7/10. Average. I didn't really "get" it. The part where aliens are being evicted from houses felt like a parody or a Pixar film. Other than some of the documentary segment, and the lab break-in, the rest was just mindless action a la Transformers.

Mindless...the film was about someone having to become the thing that he and much of his kind hated and/or just disregarded as lesser beings, the action in the second half of the film is about the main character going from selfishly acting only in his own interests to coming to accept that there were more problems going on right now than his own, and selflessly helping someone else achieve their goal to help an entire race to be left with hope of having his problem resolved later...the final shot is one of the most moving I've ever seen.

Comparing it to a parody of anything, and especially comparing it to freaking Transformers is shortsighted to say the least.
