I wish most of the music that plays in trailers were in the actual movies. That's one of things that made The Dark Knight trailer so ****ing awesome.
it was the music from batman begins. :yay:

^I think I am one of the few who was really disappointed with watchmen. Not that it was a bad film, it had its moments, but Moore was right...Watchmen is better as a book.

For me the most pleasant surprise this year was Drag Me to Hell, I expected that to suck hard...but it was pretty good. Star Trek too, but that was because I didn't see Trailer 3 (best.trailer.of.the.year) until like 2 weeks until its release, had I seen that trailer earlier I wouldve been just as excited as everyone else

Really, I expected DMTH to be great and it was, that trailer for ST was astonishing, and Watchmen was movie of the year for me before District 9 came out. I think the Watchmen DC will equal D9 though.

Domestic: $110,342,000

never thought it would make so much in the US

Nigiera Bans "District 9", demands apology from Sony

District9walker.png

Is District 9 racist against Nigerians? The Nigerian government clearly believe so - They've stepped in to ask cinemas to stop screening the movie and are demanding an apology from Sony Pictures for the movie's "unwarranted attack" on the country.

Allegations of racism against Neill Blomkamp's movie have been flying since its release, but this new move from the Nigerian government raises the stakes significantly. Information Minister Dora Akunyili explained her problems with the movie:

"We feel very bad about this because the film clearly denigrated Nigeria's image by portraying us as if we are cannibals, we are criminals... The name [of] our former president was clearly spelt out as the head of the criminal gang and our ladies shown like prostitutes sleeping with extra-terrestrial beings... I have also formally written to Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company that produced this film, demanding an unconditional apology for this unwarranted attack on Nigeria's image"

The government has also asked the Nigerian film censors' board to ban the movie within the country. Sony have so far declined to comment.

More power to District 9 really. Nigerians are only going to be more curious to watch the movie because of this.

I really doubt that Neill was being racist or trying to throw any dirt on Nigerians. He was just depicting/interpreting the realities of SA.

see this is dumb, im persian and i remeber most persians were kinda pissed about the 300 movie cause how they made the leader all gay looking lol but see that's a true story, District 9 is Sci-Fi so i really don't know why they're trippen?

^
All they wanted to do was eat prawns arms lol

This is one of the best films I have seen this year, I loved it! Prawns FTW!!
I loved how it was filmed, the characters it was great.

^ agreed, the Nigerian dude just wanted the same power

I actually can see how a Nigerian could be offended. They were portrayed as cannibals and basically practiced beastiality. But heck, this happens in a lot of movies....people will get offended sometimes. You can't make everyone happy.

It's a science fiction movie.

As far as we're concerned aliens haven't come to South Africa and they haven't eaten them so what's wrong?

WOW just saw this movie it is beyond brilliant the best movie i have seen all year

cant wait for a sequel this is one of the rare films that needs a sequel to finish the tale it was telling

I could see it, yeah, but they cant deny some of their people are criminals like the ones in the movie.

I finally caught this movie and it blew my mind. It had such great pacing and acting and special effects and is the best movie I have seen since TDK. I'm not sure if I want a sequel though, it seems like a movie that should stand on its own.

9/10

I watched it recently -- liked it a lot BUT I think it was overhyped..

Still good, nevertheless

Going to see it in theaters as soon as it is released here :) (this thursday, I think)

Hey hey hey. We refer to it as "Interspecies Erotica"

"I miss my donkey...":awesome:

I saw this movie last night. It was good, but way overhyped. It has some substance, but it's wasn't very deep as I thought it would be. There was some good concepts, but I don't think they executed them as well as they could have. I do like the documentary style they had going, and the movie was very well made for such a low budget. You'd never think they made that movie on $30 million because it looks so good. I would like to see more from the filmmakers. This was an original movie, and it's definitely worth a watch.

I wouldnt be offended if the story was set in the USA.
The main point is that it has nothing to do with Nigerians. It has everything to do with humanity. If that ship landed in any poverty stricken city, any one of those outcomes would be realistic.
On the other hand it is a story. And Nigeria, during that time, was stricken with a corrupt government, poverty, poor human rights, and definite lack of overall education.

Those figures are really impressive. It's good to see an "underdog" movie like this be successful.
