Do You Have Faith In James Gunn’s New DCU?

And if I may throw my hat in, it is a bit too early to tell if I personally have faith in GUNN yet. It is a bit like hiring a new employee who tell you on his or her first day "Have faith in me" actions speak louder than words and faith...the trailer looks ok...I didn't like Gunn's suicide squad...yet it was still better than ayers...but I thoroughly enjoyed GOG films. They were outstanding and to me amongst the dross of Marvel films were IMO the best. So hopefully he creates the same flame at DC

Do you think the failure of "The Flash" is whole Muschietti fault?

He inherited the main actor, and the universe the movie takes place in, and both of those used up whatever goodwill they had long before the movie released. If anything, I think he tried to make the best movie he could out of the chicken **** he was handed.

It’s no secret DC over the years has had trouble finding its footing cinematically compared to Marvel’s incredible success.

For years now, many had suggested that in order for DC to really hit their stride in the movie landscape was to find an executive similar Marvel’s Feige. Now it seems DC has finally found their Feige in James Gunn, who of course we know from his prior experience of directing the GOTG movies. After Gunn’s recent slate announcements, I ask you my fellow hype members how much faith or confidence do you have in Gunn’s ability himself to pull DC out the hole they’ve been stuck in.
I did enjoy Snyder’s movies because of the tone they have. Marvel movies have a lighter tone and what distinguish DC for me is the almost Shakespearean style of the comic books. I like the darker vision of the movies. When does it ever rain in the Avengers? DC is more dystopian and I want the movies to reflect that. I am unsure if Gunn’s vision will fit the DCU.

DC has utilized every style and tone and mood under the sun for decades. There is no one angle or approach they should take for their projects.
Wholeheartedly agree. You would think such a simplistic way of looking at this would be a success for DC because of marvel's "light " approach but it really isn't. If Gunn and the directors he hires do go down this route of making every hero in the DCU have most of the elements that the MCU had then they will fail imo. Different heros require different templates. What gives me some confidence was his SS where he balanced out alot of fantastical elements while grounded, very hard thing to get right but i do feel he has the right ingredients to move the DCU in the right direction.

I don't see them trying to nail down a house style. Not at all really. I know Reeves' work is "separate", but stuff like The Penguin and Creature Commandos coming out a month apart from one another seems like their angle and both are good at what they're doing imo. No part of me believes Supergirl will be similar to Lanterns. Same goes for Clayface and Waller, or Swamp Thing and Booster Gold. ****, I don't even see Superman being similar to Peacemaker and that's the same lead creative.

Outside of not gearing up production without a full script, Gunn has been consistent about the projects being able to exist on their own not only plot/story wise, but style and tone wise as well.

I am still struggling with the description of DC’s material as being “dystopian.” I’ve been reading DC for well over 40 years and I do not see it as dystopian at all. Far from it in fact. The heroes of DC are by-and-large altruistic with strong moral compasses. They exude hope and a stalwart commitment to good that always overcomes evil. The fact that good always overcomes evil kind of goes against the idea of the stories being dystopian.

The settings are not at all dystopian either. Gotham City has crime and corruption for sure, but Metropolis is a beautiful city with tons of industry, arts and infrastructure. Anyone would want to live there. Coast City, Amnesty Bay, Central and Keystone Cities, and Star City are all the same way. There really isn’t anything remotely “dystopian” about them.

I guess I don’t see it.

DC is classic superhero stuff. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc... they are the literal blueprints for superheroes as we know them.

There is nothing "dystopian" about it.

Non whatsoever.

I am mortally opposed to it for my own personal reasons, which yes, are tied to Snyder, his cast & crew and principally, the way WB have conducted themselves since 2017. I cannot and will not look past the moral vacuum that has been constantly demonstrated since 2017.

I won't be watching any DC film under the Gunn-banner or the studio, I am done with DC / WB, which as a statement in of itself, greatly saddens me, but I will not support this current management nor its output.

I hope it provides for those who do see Superman and the following films, all you wish i too but I will not be in the audience to share it with you.

Who's The Updated DCU Slate For? | Risk vs. Reward

I'm willing to remain cautiously optimistic until I see Superman for myself, as Gunn's been saying all the right things since he was hired (aside from calling The Flash amazing).

That said, I've never genuinely liked anything he's ever worked on. The Suicide Squad and Guardians 3 are okay, but for the most part I find his humor and sensibilities to be deeply repellent and unfunny. I honestly don't know how the guy that wrote and directed Super, one of the most nihilistic superhero films ever, can tackle the Big Blue Boy Scout. Does Gunn even have a wholesome bone in his body? Can he make a film with a lead character that isn't defined by trauma or antisocial behavior?

James Gunn is not the person I would've hired to write and direct a character like Superman, much less oversee the entire DC film slate, but he's what we're stuck with. At least he can't be worse than Snyder.
