I like the look a lot. The sound lets you know it's not a common lightsaber and the unstable blade seems like there's rage behind it. Excellent.

"That hilt would just take you apart if you started to do a lot of complex spinning."

Erm, what if it's not actually designed to be spinned, but is more akin to an ancient, heavier medieval broad-sword? [its aesthetic would suggest so]. Did they do much 'complex spinning' in the OT, with the original design lightsabers? Seems to me that all that was a PT invention.

When I saw the lightsaber for the first time, I totally geeked out. So, yeah, I guess I like it.

We still have no idea how long this thing is... We technically haven't seen the tip. What if it's a jousting stick?

Yeah they're fine, I mean Lucas said back in the OT that the lightsabers were supposed to have some weight to them. The lightsabers were intended to be swords like Excalibur, so the laser guard makes sense.

I love the new lightsaber. My initial reaction was of me totally nerding out over it. I come to the forums, and I see people talking about the functionality, wondering if they know Nolan isn't directing this movie.

When did Star Wars become "grounded and realistic"? Why are people now wondering about functionality in a scifi-fantasy movie? If you don't like the overall aesthetic, I get that, and that's your opinion on the matter. But if you're talking about the functionality of a completely made up fantastical weapon, then you need to get outta town with that ****. :STR:

:funny:

I really am digging the new saber, love the whole broad sword feel of it. At first I was kind of like "eh, just seems kind of unnecessary" and no real opinion on it one way or the other. But the more I see it the more it grows on me and my mind races with the possibilities for what this type of lightsaber is and why we've never seen one before. The idea of it being an ancient style saber sounds awesome.

Given the rumors of a villain collecting Sith artifacts, I'd say its most likely that this is an ancient style of light saber.

Yeah. I mean, lightsabers aren't functional to begin with. The risks of carrying around a giant laser sword that could hack off one of your limbs if you make one wrong movie is ridiculous, especially since there are laser guns everywhere that can kill your enemy from 200 yards away and pose a much lesser risk to the person using them.

There's no reason for these films to be grounded and realistic, because SW has never been that. They just need to be GOOD.

At first I thought it looked off, but getting used to it and plenty of great fan art has made me more than fond towards it.

Haven't read the thread all the way through but my first reaction was "No", I don't like it so that is how I voted.

Seems a bit impractical. I mean, wouldn't you burn your wrists if you twirled it around to block a laser bolt or something?

Here is a good example of how to fight using Claymores and other similar weapons which use hand guards. It's very different from the typical Jedi styles we've seen...except maybe teen Anakin's fighting style. Mostly two handed with a mix of one handed fighting. The Claymore utilizes an almost more "brutal" style akin to swinging an axe rather than the elegance of a single handed sword technique. The same as you would a large broadsword.

:funny:
That was great

I like the crossguard, but I feel like a simple fix like this:

would keep the aesthetic while being more obviously functional without all these excuses.

And the only viable reason to spin in a swordfight is if you're trying to die.

I'd prefer a new kind of weapon at this point. The fact that they keep having to make new designs, to keep people interested, just shows how boring they've become.

 Yup,that'll work.

Sad the people behind the movie couldn't think of a simple fix like that.
