Superman Returns Do you think this film needed a super villain?

I would pat him on the back for admitting his limitations but considering the utter debacle this film was he would still be more than welcome to leave. I'm not very impressed with his Xmen movies considering all the history and stories he had to pull from they were incredibly uninspired. He's really had only one movie I thought was worth a ****. Other than that I wouldn't lose any sleep if he never made another movie.

"Utter debacle"?

The hyperbolic nature of the fanboy never ceases to amaze. STAS was a great cartoon, but it was not the way to go in terms of making a movie. STAS was, if anything, an action-oriented show with limited characterization, not really that much more emotional than SUPERMAN RETURNS as a whole, and RETURNS had emotionally charged moments STAS never touched, or approached the same level of. What STAS did have that SUPERMAN RETURNS didn't was supervillains and Corporate Lex, but SUPERMAN RETURNS did have a heck of a threat, storywise.

The problem with the action is that the airplane rescue was just an appetiser. But we never got a main course. Nothing. Throwing an island into space is boring.
Of course we can have action like the cartoon AND have the romance dialogue. Why do people assume if you put in kick ass action theres no room for plot or character development. Bull$#it.

We should have seen Superman get thrown into a building, causing it to level, stuff like that there. Showcase the immense power of himself and his adversary and the upset he feels at putting innocents in danger due to having to stop the enemy.

You are absolutely right.

I was immaculately disenchanted with the film for the same reasons you stated. We just received an appetizer, but no main course. It was very underwhelming.

You can have great dialogue, a romance, and a great story to complement great action. If a director is very good, they can weave all the ingredients together to make a fine film. In this case, Singer wasn't able to do that, and the result is very lackluster. It's not a horrible film, although aspects such as the kid, as well as the lack of a supervillain definitely contribute toward this. This film seemed very empty and soulless. It really lacked direction and what direction was given was poorly provided in both story and representation of Superman.

Singer's fanatical blind fetish and worship of the Donner film as well as his poor team of writers really did a hatchet job on Superman. People who are disappointed in the film are disappointed because we genuinely and truly care about the character, and know he deserves better than what Singer and his whack pack gave us.

Exactly.
And even if he HAS to have the old movies be the stage for design and history then expand on it more than just adding a rival lover and a kid.
I'd love to see a fortress of solitude that looked realistic and had robots and at least a bloody lock on the door. For gods sake, superman has ALWAYS had a bloody lock on the door.
Friggen iceberg planet Krpton. everyone sleeps on crushed ice and glass. Donners Krypton sounds like a horrible place to grow up. They probably drink milk from crystals and theres no where to rest the glass because its all weird shaped so the milk spills everywhere. If you get caught looking at porn on the Krypton network you get banished to the phantom zone. But it's impossible to look at that stuff anyway because your mother can see right through all the crystal clear walls.

There is absolutely no doubt about it. Metallo would've taken five minutes to give an origin to. Five minutes to be established as a villian and could've had an absolutely kick ass battle with Superman on New Krypton. (As opposed to Lex stabbing Supes, why not just have Metallo kick his ass, then Supes could return and try to get New Krypton out of earth's orbit while having to fight Metallo...now THAT would have been a climax.)

The fact that there was no Supervillian...and no money shot moment...is why this movie is failing.

Hell, all they would've had to do was leave out one of the more stupid subplots (Ma Kent's boyfriend, Lex seducing old women, the kid, take your pick).

I totally agree on this. I liked the movie...but even as I came out of the movie I was tellin my friend....yo...they could have easily made one of those stupid henchmen into Metallo.

Also another way they could have gone....Lex talks about this great Kryptonian tech and weaponary he could use....but instead make a contintent. He should have built like a Crystal warship or crystal weapons for his Nameless henchmen to use instead.... Just like in that recent Superman comic arc. Let Goeff Johns write a superman movie....NOW HE....Worked with donner for MANY years...respects the Superman movie...but also knows the comic history...and his comic story blended Donner and comic versions perfectly.
