but, to think him looking like Tony wont play into the story at all, seems like denial (rather you like the concept or not) it can't not play factor

what other reason would there be into using him in this matter

I am sure it will. And conceptually I think it's dumb in general and we shouldn't be doing this stunt casting at all lol!

I just saying

the time for disapproving of the concept has passed, as it is happening...
we need to focus on what is the least "dumb" way it can play out, that we can at least come to some middle ground on that will be accessible

just dismissing any /an every idea that is put out their cause "you don't like it, and therefore it shouldn't happen" is just bringing more negativity to the situation (not calling you out specifically I've heard this from many people who share this ideology) an is also irreverent as its not going to stop it from happening

I appreciate that this thread is for "not liking it" an if it was limited to this thread, and not overflowing in to every thread on the topic I'd be more susceptible to it

so, just keep an open mind

But I don't define just making 100 references to him looking like Tony as "least dumb" cause to me that is EXTREMELY dumb. Threads are not just centers for people to say things without fear of negativity. If I think an idea sucks, I am going to voice that, and as a concept making Doom looking like Tony like... the biggest plot point of the film is just dumb and going to make for a movie I think is going to suck. That's my opinion. I am free to express that.

The casting of RDJ as Doom is one of the most controversial castings in CBM history, so , it's gonna be debated for the next couple years at least.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's still debated in fandom after the film is released , whether the film turns out well ,or not.

Doomsday/Secret Wars are going to be infamous as Spider-Man, X-Men 3, Batman vs Superman, Justice League... for years to come if they both end up as a dud.

But I think regardless of this casting, both movies could be still great, if the story is well written.

Even in my most optimistic visions of how this movie will be received, I am seeing Age of Ultron. This isn't going to be a glowingly praised movie like IW or EG largely were. I am expecting my personal ranking to have it near the bottom of my MCU hierarchy, but I am entering into this with a negative bias against the movie. So that would not be exactly shocking.

I am just side eying the idea of "OMG, he looks like Tony!!!" Like, I get the visual. But there isn't anything beyond the visual. It isn't like Peter should have any loyalty to him, symbiote or not, just cause he looks like another dude. I just don't find the concept intriguing

Imho that would be a massive mistake to not disguise RDJ the same way Colin Farrell was for Penguin (2nd pic BELOW).
This could be a hint of RDJ as Doom (1st pic BELOW). The less recognisable, the better. If I had it my way, I would make RDJ look like something closer to Ian McKellen in Apt Pupil (BELOW).

You can disguise him all you want but it’s still RDJ. He could deliver one of the best performances of his career, but again, still RDJ. No matter what happens here, Feige and the Russos want audiences to relate Doom to Tony, otherwise they’d have cast someone else. So it’s just a narratively lame decision at its core imo. One that I’ll probably hate until the bitter end.

Exactly this. Which is why I hate this at concept.

I also find it ironic that Doom's defining characteristic is his scars. And yet we keep wanting this moment where the plot stops dead just so we can be like "OMG, ITS TONY!!!!" It's just antithetical to everything about Doctor Doom to me. In essentially every aspect that makes the character interesting

But Age of Ultron was good...

*quickly runs away*

When it was announced, I remember thinking they were joking. Like, they were just playing with the idea of revealing who was playing Doom, but "lol, guys, it's just RDJ here, we're not announcing who's playing Doom now, lol"

I was in denial.

I also hate when the actor becomes bigger than the character. "No one else can play Logan but Jackman. No one else can play Deadpool, Green Goblin, Ock, etc..." Something genuinely feels wrong and off about that to me.

And while RDJ as Doom is different since he never played Doom, this idea of forcing these connections to him feels definitely wrong.

Well, they turned Peter into Iron Boy Jr. Now it's time for their biggest villain.

This is my hope (but not expectation).

Done properly, we should only see Victor Von Doom’s face when he’s younger, and it would be very easy to use CGI or a different actor when he’s younger and then just use RDJ for a voice and maybe some mo-cap.

I don’t know why they would pay RDJ an obscene amount of money to do that, but I don’t know why they’d pay RDJ an obscene amount of money under any circumstances, so who knows what they’re playing at.

They’re paying RDJ so much because they expect his return to attract audiences. And that expectation only makes sense if he will have considerable face time like he’s had in all his other MCU appearances.

He may look different, but I doubt there will be any crazy disguises. It’ll probably just be RDJ with a scar or two on his face.

I’m afraid you’re right, but if they’re going to be dumb, draw a line.

Don’t go full dumb. 😬

I really disliked Av2, even among the flop era that the MCU is going through I'd still rank that movie among the worst in this franchise.

Taking his Vanity Fair interview at face value, if Downey is actually playing Victor and not a Tony Stark variant who calls himself Dr. Doom, that makes this a little bit more palatable for me. Still stinks though that we're getting Doom now because of a last minute pivot.

If this Dr. Doom isn't gonna have a connection to Tony Stark then why is his likeness going to be identical to MCU 616 Tony Stark?

My guess is they'll use use the multiverse to explain the resemblance ala Fox-verse Johnny Storm looking identical to Cap. That's not to say they won't use the likeness to score drama points with the 616 characters.

It is so dumb to me that Doom looking like Stark may actually end up a plot point, when the man should be masked and hideously scarred. Just....so off base of them to be going this route. Excruciatingly frustrating
