Does the phrase "From the makers of...." persuade you to view a movie?

Basically trailers and ads have used it for decades to get behinds in seats, touting that some of the crew of their movie worked on a past popular one as well. Though on occasion it gets a little ridiculous when they advertise a movie as, "from the producers of...." when technically the most they did was finance and oversee the project, but had no other input. Has this phrase or a take on the phrase ever got you hyped up for any certain movies?

If the previous movie was good, and it's the director and/or writer, then yeah.

No, 'cause I always see it for the marketing BS it is. "Like all those damn Wes Craven Presents. . ." films (although I'll admit to loving Dracula 2000). Wes Craven being the director doesn't even inspire confidence. Red Eye? The film's shorter than a Direct-to-Video cartoon movie, and features THE WORST PROFESSIONAL HITMAN IN FILM HISTORY!!(excluding comedies and parody films, of course) Cursed? Again, excluding comedies, ala Teen Wolf, werewolf movies SHOULD NEVER be rated less than R!!

Yeah I agree. As long as they mention a movie that I liked or a good director, I will be more inclined to see it.

Red Eye was great except for the ****ty ending which brings it down a peg or two. If it's a producer tagline, I don't care, but if it's a director, yeah it'll get me interested.

If it's the writer or director, then it can stir a little intrest.

No, that rarely has an affect on me because:

a) If it's a movie I am familiar with or have kept up with, I already knew who did what and what they've done before.
b) Just because they made one movie good, does not mean the next one will be as well.

I also hate the habit of having every actor that has been nominated for or won an Oscar having that fact like some time, as in its no longer Sean Penn, its Oscar Winning Actor Sean Penn.

 Definitely, if it's the director- hell yeah. Saw 'Miami Vice' primarily due to Michael Mann being the director.

Also found it to work in reverse- never saw 'Descent' because I didn't like 'Hostel' or 'Saw' and I am still on the fence about it.
Note: 'Descent' was promoted as 'from the people who brought you Hostel and Saw'

Sometimes. It depends on who it is of course, because I would stay away from the phrase "From the makers of House of The Dead and Alone in The Dark..":o

I hated that The Descent was promoted like that. The trailer sells itself so I didn't see the need to include that tidbit. Especially since you could completely tell it was gonna be a different kind of horror movie.

Nope, its the trailers, and story that should do that.

When they say that, it just seems to me that they are saying that we know the movie isn't all that good, so we will just put <person's name> on it and it will look better. I mean you didn't hear Jurassic Park saying, from the director of Indiana Jones and E.T.

"Indiana Jones - The new hero from the creators of JAWS and STAR WARS."

Raiders turned out great.

What I do hate is "Academy Award Winner Ben Affleck" he won for writing, so unless he wrote the screenplay please don't make him appear better than his co-stars.

No it doesn't. It just tells me that the producers don't feel the movie is good enough to stand on its own.

You should definitely give The Descent a chance. It's an amazing horror film that has nothing to do with those other flicks.

I can be persuaded by a 'From the makers of' phrase, as long as it refers to directors or writers and the movie itself doesn't look like a piece of ****.
