Does the new (2006) Superman III DVD have the outer space opening credit sequence?

I don't think so Kev. It was just designed for the TV release package. I don't even think that it was ever done in theatrical aspect. PM Buggs about this. He's gotta know.

If so.....that really pisses me off.

dont the opening credits take place in the incredibly unfunny opening street scene?

No. The Superman III DVD contains the original comedic opening from the theatrical cut. The outer space credit sequence was only used for the TV versions of SIII.

Yep and that's the opening. It's funny because growing up, the only version of SIII I ever saw was the TV version, so I always assumed this was the film's original opening. I was really surprised, when I found out later on that the original version of the film had a completely different opening sequence (Theatrical/DVD version). The TV version was also an extended cut. Basically, all the deleted scenes from the new DVD of SIII the was released last year, came from that. I still have a taped VHS copy of it somewhere.

Here's a pretty good list of what's included in the two versions of the movie from Superman Cinema:

The new DVD has few of the deleted scenes but not all of them.

I prefer the movie version than this space-credits...

lol for anyone to prefer any part of superman 3 is hilarious to me

except the junkyard scene that was great

- Junkyard fight
- Best special effects in the series
- Reeve is superb as the Corrupted Superman
- Vera Webster turning into a cyborg is flat out scary
- Cool little alterations to the Superman theme
- Annette O'Toole as Lana Lang
- Reeve is physically bigger than ever as Superman, and his performance is more dynamic and commanding than before. This is my favourite of his Superman performances.

alrite i said the junkyard fight was good...and i didnt think i had to mention reeve was good either lol. yea i just remembered the smallville stuff was good though, and annette o' toole was great as lana, much better than kidder as lois. the robot scene was not scary to me more like hilarious and/or stupid and some of the special effects in this movie were actually worse (the scene were superman and ricahrd pryor were flying over the trees was pretty bad to me) than the previous two.

in concluison, aside from a few moments, this movie sucked. but reeve was great as evil superman

Yep, it has its highlights but overall the movie was crap. I like Superman IV better than III.

I assume in the version with the space titles, the street sequence is still on?

The street sequence is still there but without the credits but you can still notice the blurriness on the bottom half of the screen.

I never knew they had did this. I never watched III on TV....just at the theater and on tape. Interesting piece of trivia.

Yeah, this is what I have on an old video my grandparents recorded off the TV, but once again it's ripped off Donner footage from the first film!

I almost fell off my chair laughing at this.

How is using the Superman credit sequence, in a sequel to that movie, ripping it off?

Presumably you also think Superman III blatantly copies the original movie by using the John Williams theme tune, casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder at al, having Superman wear the same costume.....

I think you've misunderstood Kev, he doesn't mean they were ripping off the first film by using the concept of the space credits, he means that the actual footage of space that is used during these opening credits is the very same footage that Richard Donner used during the scene from Superman: The Movie when Jor-El shows Kal-El the universe, just before Superman flies for the first time in the Fortress of Solitude. That's what he means was ripped off from Richard Donner's movie.

Including in the sequels of "Star Wars" i.e. same music and opening (though different scrawl)? ;)

No, I do understand. The point is, the original theatrical version of Supes III uses Donner footage from the first movie (the Daily Planet establishing shot). And that's really no issue. So I don't think it matters if a title sequence created only for television uses some more Donner footage in the background.
