Black Group: No Imus on Air

The National Association of Black Journalists urges Citadel Broadcasting chief executive Farid Suleman and Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes to halt negotiations to return former radio personality Don Imus to the radio and television broadcast airwaves.

Recent reports that Imus is in informal talks with Fox Chairman Roger Ailes and is finalizing contractual details with Citadel Broadcasting are unimaginable.

Imus was fired last April after the shock jock called members of the Rutgers women's basketball team 'nappy-headed ho's.'

"NABJ remains outraged after the racially inflammatory insults made by Don Imus last spring. He used his free speech to broadcast hate speech. To put him back on the air now makes light of his serious and offensive racial remarks that are still ringing in the ears of people all over this country," said Barbara Ciara, NABJ president.

"It seems inconceivable that less than a year after Imus was dismissed from CBS Radio and MSNBC for his vicious insults upon the Rutger's basketball team, that Citadel Broadcasting and Fox News would consider putting him back on the air," said Ernie Suggs, NABJ's Vice President of Print.

NABJ questions why any responsible broadcast company would give Imus a forum to continue his history of racial insults on his program. Citadel Broadcasting owns 243 radio stations including ABC Radio Networks, and powerhouse radio station WABC in New York.

"It is our hope that Citadel Broadcasting and Fox News will put decency and good broadcast practices ahead of a dysfunctional alliance," Ciara added.

Give him and Isaiah Washington a show together.

jag

I thought the title was "Don Imus is black" for a minute. :csad:

They need to get off their high ****ing horse. The day they (the NABJ, for you jumpy types) acknowledge the hypocrisy of supporting Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton is the day I'll listen to a damn thing they have to say on censoring somebody.

if they Don Imus off the air, then we want Sharpton off the planet.

noir.

Back?

Back from the dead?

I still dont see how "nappy headed ho's" is racial at all...having nappy hair and being a ho are things that could apply to all races...black people claming to have the market cornered on nappy headed ho-ness is racist against all the whites, latinos, asians, etc who have strived for so long to have horrible looking hair and sleep with everyone they meet (for money)

who cares why can't he? i support any/all reinstatement of his contract. hes being paid to do nothing anyway, which is something i wish to do, and no i do not mean being a drain on society, but to have some '**** you' money to just do nothing all day for many years.

It brings a tear to my eye to think about all those brave women who fought for their right to be nappy headed hoes. :csad:

exactly...and now the black nappy headed ho's are trying to say they're the only real ones, and that it's somehow a negative thing...well I say f**k that, as I raise the flag for those brave japanese, mexican, austrailian, and other nationality and races of women who have been trying to be nappy headed ho's for decades! semper fi!

I hope they give him the same time slot at fox, if they put him on tv the way msnbc did, makes the mornings go by quicker at work.

Show me a racist quote from either Jackson or Sharpton, please. Just to support your arguement.

So, now you're trying to say that "nappy" hair is the same as the hair of somebody from another race when they mess up their hair?

Racist. :whatever:

"Hymie town."

:o

I win...though one might argue that it isn't racial (depending on whether you think Jews constitute a race), it is most certainly derogatory.

Aside from direct quotes, how about instances in which they've inflamed and deliberately widened the racial gap in America? Jena 6. :o

Seriously. Just...seriously.

NABJ sounds like a racist institution to me. Just because he's white and said "nappy headed hos", he should be off the air perminantly?

What is his "history" of racist insults? This is the first instance I've heard about one.

What hate speech does Imus talk about? It was a very unfunny joke, not hate speech.

They weren't serious remarks, and they definately aren't still ringing in the ears of the people of this country. Most people in this country probably don't give a flying **** about Imus.

I don't think I even knew who Don Imus was prior to the nappy headed hos comment.

Didnt Jesse Jackson call business owners of another race moving into Harlem "White Interlopers"???

I'm not sure, but the "Hymie town" thing is real:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_jackson#Controversies

Remarks about Jews

Jackson has been criticized for some of the remarks he has made about Jews and Jewish issues: that Nixon was less attentive to poverty in the U.S. because "four out of five [of Nixon's top advisors] are German Jews and their priorities are on Europe and Asia"; that he was "sick and tired of hearing about the Holocaust"; and that there are "very few Jewish reporters that have the capacity to be objective about Arab affairs".[15] In addition Rev. Jackson had referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown" in January 1984 during a conversation with Washington Post reporter, Milton Coleman. [16]

Sharpton:

Accusations of racism, homophobia, and bigotry

Sharpton was quoted as saying to an audience at Kean College in 1994 that, “White folks was in caves while we was building empires ... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it.”[58] Sharpton defended his comments by noting that the term “homo” was not homophobic but added that he no longer uses the term.[59] Sharpton has since called for an end to perceived homophobia in the African-American community.[60]

During 2007, Sharpton was accused of bigotry for comments he made on May 7, 2007, concerning presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his religion, Mormonism:

"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation."[61][62]

In response, a representative for Romney told reporters that "bigotry toward anyone because of their beliefs is unacceptable."[63] The Catholic League compared Sharpton to Don Imus, and said that his remarks "should finish his career".[64]

On May 9, during an interview on Paula Zahn NOW, Sharpton said that his views on Mormonism were based on the Church's traditionally racist views regarding blacks and its interpretation of the so-called "Curse of Ham". On May 10, Sharpton called two apostles of the Mormon Church and apologized to them for his remarks; he also asked to meet with them.[65] A spokesman for the Church confirmed that Sharpton had called and said that "we appreciate it very much, Rev. Sharpton's call, and we consider the matter closed."[66] He also apologized to "any member of the Mormon church" who was offended by his comments.[66] Later that month, Sharpton went to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he met with Church Elders M. Russell Ballard and Robert C. Oaks.[67][68]

Never even watched Imus, probably never will. Couldn't care less about the matter, though I'd think there shouldn't be a reporter on the planet trying to censor free-speech even if the guy doing it is an @ssclown.

Jackson and Sharpton rely on keeping the racial divide between blacks and everyone else open so they remain relevant

Two wrongs don't make a right, people. Though I do find it amusing that it's FOX News, kings of sensationalism, that are talking to him.
