Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

"Why don't we all go for a SPIN!!!"

See that worked for me because every once in a while in the comics, Doom would make a little joke of sorts and a line like that would fit. The line that says it all is still "Then why don't you come and get it, Richards!" Oh hell yeah :woot:

I liked the line. It was cool, but he said he didn't have corny one liners like he did in one, and I am pointing out that he did.

Julian is a horrible Doom. His American accent.....his "Whaddaya wants?" Doom doesn't talk like that!!! It's like neither he nor Story cared about the roots of this character. They couldn't try a European accent for cryin' out loud??? It's called "acting"!!! His high pitched voice when he first met the Surfer just grated on my nerves! And of course MaMahon is so vain, he just couldn't be disfigured like the comic book Doom, could he??

Was his costume better? Yes. But it was all style and no substance.

He has something of an accent in the first movie at some parts.

No---you wanted there to be an accent. There was none. It's just like those people who swear they saw a figure in that dust storm that was Galactus.

I like Dr Doom in the FF movies, could do with abit more of an accent but he just looks so cool.

I am sort of in the same boat. I think Julian plays "Victor" a little too flat. I would've liked to hear more of an accent, but they did decide to drop it for good after the first movie (for reasons that were unclear).

Everything in this movie is "unclear".

Doom looked and was so much better, I loved how his new armor looked now that is Doom and how he should have looked in the first one, but you get idiots that think costumes won't work, and then you see that what they come up with is no where near as good as what is there originally in the comic! So to all those filmmakers just take from the comics stay faithful and it will work, what you come up with is crap, what is in the comics is what is best and works!

I love Doom good to see him get done right but I'd have liked to see more.

Ahem, my deep personal Doom analysis. Originally written for a different, non-FF website but anyways...

Doom was handled VERY, VERY well in this movie. The first time we see him is a glimpse BUT it's made awesome because first we see a tiny mediaevil village with a castle on a hill behind it and a caption informs us that this is "HASSENSTADT- LATVERIA". This in itself is BRILLIANT! It's Latveria! It looks EXACTLY like the comics for this second! And he has a CASTLE! Already we're fifty times more Doom-like than movie one! And Doom hasn't even done anything! AND THEY GOT THE LATVERIAN CAPITAL'S NAME RIGHT!

Second appearance, he kills a minion. Of course he does. He's Doctor Doom. Again, So Doom-like- kills a minion for being too slow. In fact Darth Freaking Vader riffed this from Doom.

Third is the best so far. We see lots of monitors, TV screens displaying events, the Surfer etc... and in the centre of all this, in a chair at a control pad, rotating is the green hooded and caped figure of Doctor Doom! AWESOME! VERY COMIC-LIKE! Only slightly spoiled by his lack of a mask.

Cut to later. Blah blah, Doom gets owned by the Surfer, blah. After healing, returns in human form. His scenes in this form are many and...er...distracting. Okay so I dislike him being in human., His dialogue is good ("Just so we're clear, I hate you all.") He no longer loves Sue which is a big plus, and little use of electricity. He's too much of a lackey in this section but he has his own scheme. He's also blatantly evil. I'm serious, the guy should be twirling a moustache. He's making his own devices in the corner, standing there practically knitting his fingers together in glee and cackling. It's great!

Then the main event. Whoah, ZAPS the General and his aides. We cut away and when we cut back... YES! DOOM IS IN THE ARMOUR! OH YES! Not perfect comic accurate but EXTREMELY close, with a very personal touch and he's- GAH! It's just DOCTOR DOOM on the screen for the first time! Gets on the Surfboard, disintegrates the general and away he goes. Cue BRILLIANT air battle as Doom throws the great wall of China at them and totally owns the F4 while in awesome outfit. He also speaks little, which is a big plus after "Marco... Polo!" in movie one.

AND THEN IT HAPPENS!

Reed: "Victor! We have to get the surfboard! You have to-"
Doom: "Come and get it, RICHARDS!"

RICHARDS! HE SAID RICHARDS! HE SAID RICHARDS! OH YES! HE SAID IT! At this exact moment I know.... this is Doom. All is well. He flies around more, causes more chaos, has a brilliant part where he totally owns them all again while saying "Time for a spin!" which actually works as a quip. He is then defeated in an EXTREMELY undignified way. There is a cool but way too short battle with super-powered-up Johnny, he loses the board, gets smacked by a wrecking ball and falls into a river. And never mentioned again. Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

So for Doom alone, the movie gets a 9 out of 10. For just the last ten minutes. Sure it was way too short but it was DOOM. Now if he returns again he can return as full Doom from the start! Hassenstadt! Monitors watching things! Behind the scenes plotting! betrayals! Power stealing! RICHARDS! IT'S DOCTOR FREAKING DOOM, BABY! After the crap Norman Osborn rip-off of movie one we are at the real things. The only disappointment here was his lack of much motive beyond "Get power. Kill 4." He's also still a bit 2d and does not yet rule Latveria but he's getting there.

So I want to see him return in 3 now. Preferably return by stepping into the UN in full armour, already Lord of Latveria. But this was MUCH better than I anticipated even after the novel.

Personally Doom ( or what is supposed to be DOOM) was a huge dissapointment to me,
Now before people accuse me of just being a FF movie/ STORY hater let me start by saying the following.
I like the movie and I LOVED the Silver Surfer.
I thought it was much better than the first.
Not great by any means but pretty good.

But IMHO Story continued the ruin of Dr. Victor Von Doom.
From the very first appearance I was dissapointed to see the same lame metal skin and electrical powers. (I'm sorry but if we're talking about the Doom this is simply not accurate).
Secondly I found his voice to be weak and lacking of the Majesty and power one would expect from Dr. Doom/victor.
His first (second) cloaked appearance when he approached SS was terrible IMO. Once again his voice was terribly weak and that wrap he wore around his mouth made him look/act nothing like Dr. Doom.
I was even more dissapointed that they went back to the Doom as Victor approach. Guys I don't know why so many are overlooking that a fundemental aspect of Dr. Doom is that you do not see his face.
that essential fact goes a long way into making Doom, DOOM.
Having julian walking around as Victor makes it simply not Dr.DOOM. It is something he has NEVER done in the comics. ever.

Julian's performance was another let down. I agree that he was less campy than in FF1 but his performance was still that of a playboy business man. (granted this time he had a greater world domination aspirations) I will also grant that overall it wasn't bad in the movie. But what I'm saying is that it was nothing like the Dr.Doom from the comics.

The last insult was the costume. I realize I'm in the minority on this but I hated the costume. Yes I realize that it kinda looked that the comic costume and because of that many of you feel it was so close it was no big deal. But I look at it another way. It if was so close than why didn't story simply give us the Doom costume as it is? It would have been "no
big deal" to do so, yet they simply chose not too. Why not? I can't be because what they came up with is better, because it wasn't. for that reason I do not accept this cheap knock off.

Now I will admit that once he gains the SS's powers he does look better (mainly because from a distance it is hard to tell the difference) and does act more like a power enfused Doom. I liked those scenes.

But as far as bringing THE Dr. Doom to life, I say Story fell way, way short.

The shame is that it would have been so easy to.

See that worked for me because every once in a while in the comics, Doom would make a little joke of sorts and a line like that would fit. The line that says it all is still "Then why don't you come and get it, Richards!" Oh hell yeah :woot:

The difference for me between first movie Doom, and this movie Doom....

The jokes were villain worthy this time around, and delivered like a villain.

The first movie they were corny jokes, and delivered weak.

I'll say this despite Story (Ruining The Big G in this movie) He has Redemed himself (from the first movie) with Dr. Doom .

Now this should've been the type of Doom we should've gotten the first time around in the first movie . (While Julian McMahon still did not archive the place of his comic book counterpart version of Dr. Doom, he sure came pretty damn close.)

I love when they took the classic comic book storyline, When Doom becomes one with the Silver Surfer's board .(IMO they should've made the fight a little longer, still it was enjoyable .)

LOVED Dooms new look. If you could have seen my reaction when I saw it....I was VERY excited

I liked the line. It was cool, but he said he didn't have corny one liners like he did in one, and I am pointing out that he did.

The difference to me is the delivery....

Hell even "marco polo" could have been said like...

"marco....................................as he reaches out to grab Sue by the throat..............polo (with anger)......and I wouldn't have had a problem with that....

The delivery this time was MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better....

Saw the movie for a second time and I enjoyed Doom a lot more the second time around...He was pretty badass..

Doom was a lot better...needs to be more gritty though...we need him to create death and destruction on a larger scale. He nearly got there though.

I think this film has gone a long way in making a course correction in Doom. Costume, though not like the comics, still worked for me. I think there was a still here that showed that the cape was more of a dark emerald green but it wasn't really clear when he was in motion.

Now a couple of people have remarked about his voice in the early scenes, before the Surfer atomized him and then his body re-assembled itself. By the way, in a round about way it was a bit of a shout out to FF#260 where the battle between the Silver Surfer and Terrax blasts Doom's body into dust. I think his voice is like that on purpose, it sounded a bit hoarse to me, like he was still feeling the after effects of Johnny's nova flame.

As for there being too much of Julian as Victor, all I can say is you guys have Jessica .... I like seeing Julian on the big screen. :woot:

I didn't like how quickly Doom suddenly appeared in his costume. I saw he had the mask, but he had brought his entire costume to that base? Maybe it was the editing that made it seem weird to me

Maybe he brought the components with him....he was working on some stuff when Sue caught him.

It's strange. When McMahon play Victor in human form, is a machiavellian, shifty, good villain. But when became Doom with the armor, it's a disappointment. It's a villain without a evil plan, with stupid dialogue. I don't understand why this...

What exactly did the Surfer do to Doom? Obviously he was still a metal man underneath, demonstrated by Thing slamming him against the wall at the UN. And of course he still had his electricity powers. Did the Surfer just heal him or what?

It's weird that I keep hearing Julian's surname pronounced in American clips as 'Mc-Mann' when, as an Irish name, it's pronounced 'Mc-Marn'...

I must admit Dr. Doom was very much improved despite some of the problems he still had (intelligence still not played up to be on par with Reed, still not alot of development on his behalf, his odd voice).

I also didn't think the mask couldn't get any better but I even loved the redesign of the mask since it looked really intense and evil.

Kind of like the first, his look was OH so close to the comics. He needs to have more armor on his person for it to really work but they seem to be slowly showing what makes Dr. Doom so cool. Now I would have rather seen that from the outset but perhaps for the 3rd they're going to go all out since they left his fate open ended again.
