I don't think that Julian McMahon is terrible as Dr. Doom. He just needs to be given the direction to act a little more intelligently sinister, perhaps deepen his voice a little.

I guess they figure Julian McMahon looks too pretty to be hidden behind the mask all the time. Of course they could also worry that keeping him ensconsed in the mask would limit the amount of emoting he could do.

I would enjoy seeing a film where he had the mask on all the way through. I don't care what he looks under it- Kirby had him with a small scar as opposed to the full facial burn- I just want McMahon to show me a version of Doom that doesn't rely entirely on Julian's face to be menacing. This movie was really hampered by the fact that it took so late in the game for him to rise back to status, and that there was not even an iota of improvement in his tone. He still sounds like the snobbish businessman with an inferiority complex rather than the slightly-arrogant ruler of Latveria he should be playing.

It's not all his fault, though. "Let's go for a spin!" is like "I like being bad- it makes me happy." There are only so many ways to make that sound good. Some of the weaker parts could be attributed to the writing.

I actually thought they hit the nail on the head with doom....in like the first 15 seconds we're introduced to him. We cut to Lateveria to a big creepy castle. Doom's voice was all wraspy, the costume was even a little better. But then he gets in his doomcopter blah blah blah.

But still, yeah, its not only a miscast, but just bad writing.

"Let's go for a little spin!"

heh, doom's words evoke fear on our hearts...yeah right.

Y'know, I feel like they can change the actor. Really, think about it. In the next FF don't have him take off his mask. KEEP IT ON and maybe use special effects for his voice. Heck, they had a new actor play Jason!

He doesn't see himself as arrogant at all in the books- that's why I said "slightly". He's a brilliant mind, but most of his greatest plots are foiled by his inability to see flaws in his own judgement. Doom isn't quite the "I am invincible" arrogant until he's really in the commander's chair/ is the chess piece holder in a situation.

I think Julian McMahon is a great actor. It's not his fault that Doctor Doom has turned out the way he turned out. The only person at fault is Tim Story, and him only. Julian McMahon can be the Doom that we all want to see, but an actor also needs the director's guide to fully excel in what they need to do. In Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Doom was such a wasted character. Seriously, nothing was really explored. We had random/annoying 30-second scenes of him in Latveria that were cut and pasted in between the early movie. He was terribly written. Seriously, he was so insignificant and butchered that Story should have just let Doctor Doom stay out of the story. It's Story's fault that Doom is not the Doom in the comics, not McMahon's fault. We were promised "FULL Doom" by Story, and we ended up getting half of the Doom that we got in the first movie.

...Doom did have that completely bad ass scene when he suited up, gained the surfboard, and powered up (while the amazing Doom updated theme played).

I will still stand up for Story, though. I just know that he can make a good movie like he did Barbershop. However, the third movie is his last chance with me. If he messes the next one up, he loses all credibility from me.

Well of course he doesn't see HIMSELF as arrogant- in fact, he sees Richards as arrogant (Not without merit.... 'Mister Fantastic' indeed.) but the fact remains he's possibly the most arrogant character in the medium. His entire gyp is based on a COLOSSAL inferiority complex that there's one guy who's better than him. He's even MORE arrogant if you subscribe to the Kirby-Scar philosophy.

Doom is awesome, regal, honourable... but definitely arrogant.

Doom was hit and miss.

McMahon is a good actor but his voice is terrible for Doom. But Doom had an awesome costume in this film and I liked some of his scenes that made him look badass. The writing was bad though, and again, Doom looked menacing but sure as hell didn't sound menacing, which is half of it. On the next film, we need better dialogue, an even more badass look, and please, use a filter for Julian's voice.
