Dr. Strange... should Marvel wait for Del Toro?

Francis Lawrence. I loved what he did for I am Legend In Name Only (My favourite book will never be adapated faithfully :( ). His take on Doctor Strange would be interesting. Probably more suited to the real world take of the Iron Man/ TIH universe.

Lawrence is a good director as long as the studio isnt ripping apart what hes adapting. Constantine falls under the unlucky category of bastardized Vertigo/Alan Moore adaptations and I Am Legend is definitely the Hollywood stereotype of trying to create "marketability" (that was essentially already there). Marvel wouldnt let him color outside the lines too much so he could work. GDT will always be a better choice though.

the cgi in i am legend threw me off completely it sucked apart from that it was good

Jonathon Mostow(spelling) director of U571 might be able to pull it off. He's new and had a couple of blockbusters under his guidance.

I think GDT would've made a kickass Dr. Strange movie. However, waiting until 2017 or when he's available will take too long, and Hellboy 3 will probably be his top priority over Strange anyway. I think they should find someone else with an unique vision to helm it. No weaksauce like Ratner as director please.

hobbit is pegged for 2010 and its sequel for 2012. The Avengers isnt pegged until 2011, and thats kind of an if considering the ambitious dates (Favs is worried so dont say there that bad). Dr. Strange wont be a priority until at least after Avengers, so i think Marvel and Del Toro's priorities will sync up around the same time. I think it could be sooner than 2017 but it definitely wont be out anytime soon. Might as well wait for Del Toro

What about Robert Zemeckis to direct Dr. Strange? I like his style and he hasn't made any bad movies that I can remember.

That wouldnt be too bad. His work with CG lately might give us some awesome looking magic scenes.

How about Alex Proyas who directed the crow, dark city and I,Robot.
Maybe David Lynch could be given a chance to redeem himself for the worst big budget SciFi movie of all time, Dune.

aslong as johnny depp stars

Now, do you guys think that Marvel should/will hold out until 2017 for Del Toro (if he is actually going to be booked until then) or move on to another equally great director?

You can always get him to produce

Proyas, yes. Lynch, nah, too exoteric. Here's a possibility: David Cronenberg.

I'd love to see a Del Toro directed Strange - I think his imagination and visual flair for the magical and supernatural would compliment the source material immensly and give us something truly special;

Unfortunately, If it's a toss-up between that and being prepared to wait until 2017 to see a Dr.Strange film?

I'd cut my losses, say that it wasnt meant to be and go with another director.

2017? Holy hell... Yeah, Del Toro isn't the only director, find someone else.

‘Dr. Strange’ Movie Likely Among Next Crop Of Marvel Films, Says Studio President Kevin Feige
Published by Shawn Adler on Monday, October 20, 2008 at 6:01 pm.
He is the Master of the Mystic Arts and the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. If a magician without limits seems unlikely in this day and age of “realistic” comic book movies, consider that Dr. Strange’s next moniker might be the weirdest of all: Big Budget Film Hero.

The character Marvel editor Joe Quesada called “problematic,” and comic writers Neil Gaiman and Stan Lee called the one character they’d most like to see next in film, is very much at the top of the list for a post “Avengers” make-over, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told MTV News.

“Very much so,” Feige said. “I’d say in the next year, year and a half, as we start putting together our film slate for 2012 and 2013, I would not be shocked if we saw Dr. Strange on those lists. I love the idea of taping into the magical realm of the Marvel Universe, which is fairly significant and hasn’t yet seen life on screen.

“It’s something I’m very, very interested in,” he emphasized.

Feige was so insistent and enthusiastic, in fact, that we’re now taking “Dr. Strange” off the board and will no longer accept bets. We’re confident he’s coming and coming soon. Now all we have to do is let people not familiar with many Marvel characters beyond Spider-Man in on who the heck he is.

“Ha!” Feige laughed. “I remember two years ago at Comic Con the cover of the ‘LA Times Calendar Section,’ read ‘Marvel calls out the B team’ and there was a picture of Iron Man. We don’t look at them as ‘B team.’ Dr. Strange? This is one of the best characters we have. [He represents] this amazing cosmic universe to Marvel that we haven’t played with in films yet and I think could be amazing to play with.”

Glad that Feige wants to go ahead with it. I hope we get some good updates in the coming weeks/months.

Thats kinda what I said. Theres no way it'll be a priority until after Avengers but wont be so late that it'll be 2017. I think it also works really well for Del Toros scehdule

I've been reading a lot of Dr. Strange lately and I finished watching the animated movie. He's definitely crawling up on my list of favorite heroes...They need to move forward with the project.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told MTV News that Dr. Strange is on the short list of comic properties that they will explore after The Avengers hits the big screen.

It’s something I’m very, very interested in.”

To me, Dr. Strange has always been a C-level Marvel property. He’s like a DC character stuck in the Marvel universe. Whenever he shows up in one of the stories I’m reading, I’m immediately turned off. Dr. Strange’s magical powers are endless, and I usually like my superhero stories to be grounded in a realistic world (which probably explains my addition to Vertigo imprint books). For example, Strange’s appearance in Kevin Smith’s Daredevil, which is a flawless story arc aside from the Strange appearance. That said, I’ve never given a stand along Dr. Strange book a fair read, but I somehow doubt my opinion would change about the character.

AFTER THE AVENGERS, MARVEL GETS STRANGE

Either Kevin Feige's been listening to a lot of the Modern Lovers or maybe he just knows what the people want, because he's suddenly happy to talk about the chances of a Doctor Strange movie hitting screens in 2012. This could be what we've been missing. Strange, once an arrogant surgeon and John Holmes look-alike, became Earth's Sorcerer Supreme after an auto accident wrecked his hands, and therefore his livelihood.

Feige is "very, very interested" in the character. “I’d say in the next year, year and a half, as we start putting together our film slate for 2012 and 2013, I would not be shocked if we saw Dr. Strange on those lists," he told MTV. "I love the idea of tapping into the magical realm of the Marvel Universe, which is fairly significant and hasn’t yet seen life on screen." Not on cinema screens, anyway. Check out the embedded clips below for a taste of the ill-fated 1978 Doctor Strange television pilot.

Who can't love this idea? Strange is like an East Village swinger version of John Constantine, but with half the personality. He's been brought in as a day player so many times that he's often just reduced to Marvel's bland deus ex machina. He's the only hero whose hideout is more arrogantly named than Superman's: the Sanctum Sanctorum. He's also got a ridiculous dance card of villains: Karl 'Baron' Mordo. The Dread Dormammu. Satannish! Besides, think of all the pretty colors we'd see onscreen as Strange traveled to and through the Astral Plane. And don't forget that with this movie in the can we'd be one step closer to a Defenders film, and from there it's just an ill-fated pitch meeting to gold: The West Coast Avengers!
