Dragonball Z live action movie

Big DBZ Fan, but I say NAY!
Ditto. It would just look stupid and the plots would be all out of order.NAY.

It would look weird, sure, but not stupid. DBZ is supposed to look weird anyway. Notice all the regular people that appear on the show don't have spikey hair like the main characters.

If a DBZ movie is to be made, weird as possible is the way to go....Well as weird as the show is anyway.

On a cartoon animation, pineapple shaped hair is a possibility of an image without looking ******ed. In real like......well not so much. Plus I don't think the speeds they generate at and all their powers will be captured in a way without looking stupid.

There's my reason real actors look like crap when they have that kind of hair. And to a guy above :

DBZ not about hair? Oh sure. So if Goku turned SSJ1 and his hair turns purple , modern-day style , you wouldnt mind? Its somewhat about the hair ... but its also HOW they wanna make it look.

I say CGI... no live actors. :ninja:

......Okay, as the "guy above"...ME wrote...

Well 10 years ago no one would have thought there could have been Lord of the Rings movie because it wasnt at its "peak" anymore. The characters would be to hard to make etc.....so I dont think thats anything to worry about. Why would you worry about character looks, They make ALOT of changes to make it more...Realistic like...like take out Choatzu and Puar, Oolong stupid crap like that. There hair chould be normal just with a bounce, And like super saiyan would look the same...stuff like that. Regaurdless, I would be willing to bet money that one day...could be 2007 or 2008...could be 2017! I dont know but one day a Dragonball Z movie *most likely by FOX* will be made.
Hopefully *for me* SOON...
Oh yea Id much rather have American actors.

Well, I hope you dont just like dragonball because of their hair.*lol* It would be fine with me if goku and everyone else had normal modern day hair styles, not all that weird spikey stuff like in the series. Super saiyajin hair of coarse would stand on end, glow gold all that stuff. But if goku had hair like....I dont know... MINE for instants, it would be fine. Like I said its the storyline, NOT the hair.

That's because you are still trying to think of it realistically. If it's established as a seperate world altogether, we can have some Neverending Story kind of stuff going on here...Just with Kung Fu. :D Shenron should be a pretty cool sight to behold.

As for the speed, I'm sure it could look fine. Film the actors fighting in front of a green screen so later it can be sped up while everything around them is kept at a normal speed. In some situations freez everything around them and have them move at normal speed. I can actually picture the fight zipping from place to place and leaving destruction in it's path. It could be some beautiful and brutal stuff. That alone will get people theater seats. I can even see a special beam cannon similar to the energy stream in Ghost Busters but imagine with today's effects what they can do.

The reason I won't support it, is because I just know that they won't get it right. Especially if it's FOX. They've half-assed so many franchises, never are they going to do something big as Dragonball justice.

For the most part though, doesn't Hollywood just screw everything up when they get their hands on it? I think a CGI movie would work better, that way everything would blend nicely and people wouldn't come out saying. "Man that totally looked fake." IMHO

Some movies are just suited better for animation.

They'd have to go all out with this movie. I don't want to see some guys with spikey hair fighting in the desert. I want to see guys with 4 feet of hair flying around doing midair kung fu like in Matrix Revolutions.

The hair is really important.

This Movie has to be done with CGI. I want my Capsule Corp. capsules, Dinosaurs, the human/dog King of the World, Oolong, the whole crazy stuff.

I don't want to see any lame attempt at realism.

Doesn't have to be CGI to not be realistic. I'm saying if they dump the realism altogether, it can work as much as Labyrinth or The Neverending Story or any other all out fantasy flick you can think of.

Getting guys like Jim Henson or the people that worked on Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth would be gold for this movie.

I'd love to see similar FX to those in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

but with flying kung fu action

That would be awesome, except sadly he died years ago. :csad:

Yeah but his company is still goin' and doing great stuff. They can totally bring DBZ's unique look to life.

That would be awesome. What projects has his company done in the past 5-10 years?

They also did The Farscape tv series.

In the end the dinosaurs, hover cars and cartoon animals are not important. They never became a key plot point and all they would end up doing is making people not want to watch the film because they would think it was silly.

The important point of the story is Goku, the dragonballs/ie unlimited power and the goku-vegeta rivalry. Those are the overarching themes of the DBZ series. The dinosaurs nevere did anything but walk around in the middle distance. They are`nt neccesary. In the same way that Fantastic Four doesn`t need Herbie or The impossible man.

Yeah but it's part of the scenery. The setting. It helps that fantasy element. I mean is it safe to say any of the characters are actually human?

That's why I'm hoping this movie's a hard PG. Not even PG-13. PG.

Yeah but it is useless clutter. They aren`t gonna do expensive realistic cgi dinosaur models for DBZ just because "its part of the scenery".

I`d rather they focus on the characters and the action set pieces than throwing money down the urinal making cgi dinosaurs.

Anbd also if its gonna be a decent dbz movie it should aim for pg-13. Can you imagine trying to write a live action PG version of the frieza saga? He shoots vegeta through the chest, kills several nameks and impales krillin on a horn. Dragonball Z fights are brutal slugfests it should aim for pg-13 to do it justice.

That's true. It's just the nature of the show itself that is so kid friendly. I mean if it's PG-13, it certainly won't be because of language.

And my point is things like the dinosaurs and the talking animals would not be done with CGI but with puppetry.

I just thought of something. The Saiyan saga. How would it be done? I feel like the king kai element would have to be totally removed because of length but at the same time, there's a reason he should be the only one able to defeat these guys...The King Kai and dragon way element would have to be shortened significantly or changed significantly. I think this saga would need to be totally rewritten, actually. Maybe get it down to a little over an hour and a half or barely 2 hours (because no-one's sitting through this for more than 2 hours) with Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta arriving together. Either that or remove Raditz altogether and mix his character with Nappa.

No I expect they would try to get it to LOTR length. I mean its not like superman returns, there will be plenty of action scenes to keep people occupied.

Raditz role is neccesary because he turns up early in the plot to warn the characters and audience that the threat is coming.

He also causes Goku to die. The goku dieing aspect is important. The dinosaurs and talking animals are largely superficial elements of the series but the whole relationship between the world and the afterlife is an important fantasy aspect to dragonball.

Also if you remove Raditz then goku doesn`t die thereby he would be there ready when vegeta and Nappa turn up. This would mean he would be the only one who would fight because he is the strongest one there. His temporary absence is neccesary to allow the other characters to have their own moments. If he is therew from the moment nappa and vegat arrive then you might as well just delete the whole supporting cast because they would be just pointless loose ends.

Thats why i said remove the dinosaurs. It is a needless element that simply detracts from telling the actual story.

I`d say they would go for a 2.5 to 3 hour film spaced roughly like this:

00 mins: Introduction of Goku and other main characters. Rivalry with piccilo hinted at (MAKE PEOPLE WANT TO SEE DRAGONBALL PREQUEL MOVIES).

15 Mins: Raditz arrives. Tells Goku of his true origins. Goku & Piccilo fight Raditz. Goku and Raditz die.

30 Mins: Krillin gathers the strongest fighters in the world and begin to train with them. Piccilo trains the young Gohan in the use of his powers. Goku awakens in the afterlife. To save time lets have he is instantly at King Kai`s planet. (we only really need to see the journey back. why repeat ourselves?)
Goku starts to train.

45 Mins: All continue training. Character development.

60 Mins: Training continues. Gohan might turn oozaru at this point. Krillin and co go into hyperbolic time chamber and face off against fake saiyens. Goku finishes training is told only way back to earth is along the perilous long snake way.

75 Mins: Goku sets out along the snake way. Z-fighters finish training just as spacecraft approach earth.

90 Mins: The saiyens arrive. Decimate armed forces which resist them. Z-Fighters arrive.

105 Mins: Goku continues along snake way facing a couple of dangers ,leave out the snake princess sub-plot just have goku attacked by gaint snake at one point oif you want. Z-Fighters square off against nappa. Big fight only gohan is left consciuos as dust settles. Gohan vs Nappa.

120 Mins: Goku reaches the end of the Snake way. Gohan hesitates in killing nappa. Gohan is knocked out by nappa. Tien and Krillin come around. With momentary window of advantage gone, Piccilo, Tien and Krillin forced to fight Nappa.

135 Mins: Tien and krillin put up good fight but are knocked down again. Goku arrives back on earth. Piccilo is defeated but Goku appears and saves his ex-rival from death at the hands of nappa. Goku versus nappa.

150 Mins: Goku easily defeats Nappa. Vegeta kills Nappa. Goku and Vegeta begin to fight.

165 Mins: Battle with Vegeta. Full on knockdown battle. Oozaru vegeta appearance maybe?

180 Mins: Vegeta defeated. Freeza saga is setup. To be continued... Credits.

This is very loose but gives an idea of the spacing. Don`t nitpick specific timeslots, its just to give an idea of what i think is important to the plot.

My point is there is little time to shoulder in talking animals and dinosaurs. Its packed as it is.

Like I said on the Live Action Anime forum, I thought about it and starting at the Dragonball series would be the Best idea.

Can't have too much time taken up by training. Especially the hour you have there. Maybe a fight or two during the training would help things. I honestly don't think a 3 hour DBZ movie would do well though. I mean even King Kong had it's fair share of complaints and it's King Kong! I think 2 hours alone is already pushing it.

Plus you will have changed stuff too, that will take time out, and new stuff too. (we all know how hollywood is.)
