What's the point of a CG movie honestly? We have animated everything for DBZ already

I think a CG movie using Toriyama's designs could actually work. A PG-13 action flick. And Pratt voicing Goku actually could work.

Ehm... If you're going to make a CG DBZ-movie, the only one voicing Goku should be Sean Schemmel.

Exactly. In fact, a $5 million animated one from Japan that was WRITTEN BY AKIRA TORIYAMA is doing big money from a LIMITED THEATRICAL RELEASE.

I too don't see any point in making a CGI film given the fact that we're already talking about a franchise with various animated shows and films and is still currently alive and well. So, if another major film were to happen, it'll probably be live-action. Though those chances are very low.

Also, another white washing of characters would be on so many levels of stupid.

Well, Goku isn't human, so he technically doesn't have to be Asian. Same goes for pretty much every other alien in the franchise.

I think all of the humans have to be/should be portrayed by Asian actors, though. I don't remember if there are any exceptions to that rule.

steven yuen should be goku. end of story.

Until we get an asian guy over here that's commanding the bucks like their white or black counterparts kinda are, it won't happen. There are a lot of asian and asian american dudes in the game now doing supporting **** all up and down the industry but no leading men. No Asian Chadwick Bosemans happening anytime soon.

You could hire an Asian unknown for Goku but surround him with well established actors. This has been done many times (Wonder Woman is looking to be this).

Given the domestic success Resurrection F for a limited release, maybe Fox finally starts to realize what they have. Early reports stated that it was Fox who fought with Toei to get Resurrection F released in North America as fast it has.

I don't mind Goku being white as long as he nails the character. Though I would prefer it if he didn't look super white like Justin Chatwin.

Also I want Jason Momoa in the film. Don't know which role I would put him in yet.

Sure, but given the background of the franchise and its inspiration, I don't know how anyone could take Goku being White seriously. Plus, what happened last time. And I'm sure the recent study about White male actors and Hollywood would be brought up countless times too.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ $5.97 Million Gross At American Box Office

FUNimation, the company behind Dragon Ball Z in North America, has announced the latest film in the franchise has reached $5.97 million USD in gross sales at the American box office since its theatrical debut on August 4! $1.81 million USD of those $5.97 million USD came this past weekend and another $1.97 million USD on opening day. This past Saturday, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ became the first independent film to make the Top 10 list of highest grossing anime films domestically. “It’s a great film that loyal DBZ fans, and fans of anime, have helped push into the record books in just 6 days,” said Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation. “Great word of mouth, extremely positive reviews, plus a film that appeals to core fans and is creating new fans, have led to sold-out shows, repeat viewings, and additional theaters being added through Wednesday.”
“Based on the unprecedented success of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F,’ hundreds of theater locations are being added this week to meet demand,” said David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation. “Don’t miss out on your chance to see this record-breaking movie, as it will be ending its theatrical run this week.”
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ will continue to run in theaters in North America, in both the U.S. and Canada, until Wednesday, August 12. We at Saiyan Island wish continued success for FUNimation and the legendary series that started it all!
Take note Fox, DBZ can make you alot of money and you're sitting on a goldmine for a franchise.

I'm skeptical of Fox doing this justice. If they had problems with the F4's comic book elements, even when there's proof that CBMs are widely embraced, there's a snowball's chance in hell of them doing DBZ right.

I've thought long and hard about how Dragon Ball could be adapted to the screen. Even attempted to write it myself.

Initially I thought a Dragon Ball film franchise should just focus on adapting the story arcs of the manga. As a result I came up with a plan for seven films to go with the seven dragon balls.

But with the release of the new films and Super, along with the extra story material from previous films, tv specials, video games, and even filler; I felt that there was too much good stuff (or potential for good stuff) to ignore. And with so many characters and the growing mythology, I figured I'd go all out and expand my plan into a cinematic universe.

Keeping in mind that this list isn't complete, nor is this a definitive release order.

First, here's the original core seven films:

1. Dragon Ball: The Journey

Goku is living his life on his own when he runs into Bulma, or more accurately she runs into him. He joins her search for the dragon balls, along the way encountering characters like Roshi, Oolong, ,Yamcha, and Puar. As their quest gets in the way of Pilaf's own search for the dragon balls, he devises a plan to make our heroes come to him.

Goku and Bulma's journey brings them to Fry Pan mountain, where the Ox King enlists Goku to help Chi Chi find Master Roshi to put out the fire. While on Roshi's island, they are met with the unexpected arrival of Krillin, who's seeking to train under Roshi so that he may compete in an upcoming tournament where in addition to a cash prize, the winner will receive a dragon ball. Ultimately Roshi agrees to train Goku and Krillin as they make way towards the tournament and by this point, the final dragon ball.

As it turns out, the tournament is hosted by none other than Pilaf. It is in fact an elaborate distraction so that Pilaf can search those who came for the tournament, believing that at least one of them will have the other dragon balls. As Goku advances through the tournament, he takes notice of another contestant named Jackie Chun, who is of course Roshi in disguise. Chun and Goku face off in the finals, and despite a hard fought battle, Goku loses, but is inspired to train harder than ever. At the same time, Pilaf finds and steals Bulma's dragon balls. He has all except for Goku's four star ball, which he has kept close at all times.

The gang learns of the theft. They go to inform Pilaf. Here Pilaf learns about the dragon radar and Goku's ball. When the gang grows suspicious, Pilaf captures them and steals the final ball. The rest plays out like the manga. Pilaf summons the Dragon, Oolong screws up the wish and gets captured. Goku sees the moon, transforms, wrecks ****, and Pilaf escapes in the chaos. The gang manages to cut off Goku's tail and he transforms. The next morning, Bulma and Yamcha get together, Krillin chooses to stay with Roshi, and Goku decides to look for his grandfathers ball. They say their goodbyes, and Goku flies off to the next adventure.

2. Dragon Ball: The Red Ribbon Rebellion

Haven't figured out the entirety of this yet, but I will that the Red Ribbon saga(duh), the Tenshinhan saga, and the first two DB movies are the ingredients I'm planning to put into the blender of mind if and when I get to this point.

3. Dragon Ball: Strongest Under the Heavens

Piccolo and Piccolo jr. arcs. I'm also considering incorporating elements of the Fortuneteller Baba saga here as well.

4. Dragon Ball: The Saiyan Secret

I think this one's self explanatory.

5. Dragon Ball: Fear of Freeza (working title)

Also self explanatory.

6. Dragon Ball: The Mysterious Youth

Android/Cell sagas.

7. Dragon Ball: The Malice of Majin (working title)

And one more for self explanatory.

Next, here are ideas for various prequels, side stories, and spinoffs which I'm placing under the label "Dragon Ball Sagas."

1. The Namekian

The Namekian traveler crashes on Earth. He awakens with no memory of his name or where he came from. He walks the Earth in search of an identity which over time evolves into a more spiritual journey for enlightenment. His journey leads him to seek the counsel of the current Kami. He also encounters Garlic, who seeks to usurp Kami. After Garlic is banished, the Namekian is offered to succeed Kami, but he is hesitant after seeing powers potential to corrupt in Garlic, so he seeks to purge the evil within himself. Resulting in the split of Kami and Picccolo. The film ultimately ends with Piccolo's imprisonment, Kami's ascension, and the creation of the dragon balls.

2. Planet Vegeta

The Bardock special expanded to included storylines with Freeza, his family, King Vegeta, his family, Paragus, and Broly.

3. The History of Trunks

Like the title suggests, only expanded to begin as if this were the direct sequel to Fear of Freeza. Begins similar to Mysterious Youth, but when Freeza arrives on Earth, Goku teleports in to stop him in time. An "Up" like montage follows of the next three years going well, only to turn south with Goku falling ill and dying. Androids 17 and 18 arrive, kill everyone, and wreak havoc. Gohan and Trunks fight as well as they can, but Gohan eventually falls. Trunks continues fighting, despite the alternative his mother keeps working on. Trunks gets beaten to near death, forcing him to admit that he's not strong enough and agree to his Mother's plan to travel back in time and change history.

4. Androids

Focusing on Krillin and 18. Krillin copes with the loss of his best friend and the girl he can't stop thinking. 18, seperated from her family and her humanity, tries to figure out where her life is headed. 17's impulsiveness leads him to another of Dr. Gero's strongholds, where he finds the remaining andriods, 15,14, and 13.

Meanwhile, we also get flashbacks to a young brother and sister leaving home and falling into the clutches of the mad doctor.

5. Mr. Satan/Hercule

In a similar vein to the Muppet movie, Mr. Satan invites everyone to the premiere of a movie based on his life, showing his rise to the top of the martial arts world, with some "creative liberties."

6. The Great Saiyaman

No idea what this'll be about, but I thought it would be fun seeing Gohan and Videl in a kind of slice of life superhero comedy.

7. History of Trunks Part 2

Future Trunks forms the Time Patrol.

8. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

Face it, Dragon Ball Z is unfilmable, and you just can't adapt it to live action and make it work, make it good and feasible for a large scale American audience. That's just how it is.

Between Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Avatar, The Avengers, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and a number of good/successful sci if and fantasy films, I find it difficult to believe that there isn't a way to make Dragon Ball work.

I would consider deleting Pilaf and using the Red Ribon instead, maybe film 2 could be a martial arts tournament with elements from the 3rd animated film, would be much smaller in scale than the other ones, but also opens up other possibilities in the storyline.

Anyway, yeah, i do not think Dragon Ball is unfilmable, unlike something such as Dune, it's original storyline is simple, straightforward and universal.

The problem with starting with the Red Ribbon Army is that in order to do that storyline, or at least the way I imagine it, justice is that the film would need a bigger scale/budget. The first movie should be relatively smaller compared to the rest of the franchise.

My first movie is essentially a martial arts road trip/treasure hunting movie. Sort of Karate Kid meets the Goonies blended with the Never Ending Story or the Dark Crystal.

What I like about Pilaf is that his group makes an entertaining parallel to our protagonists. And I also think it would be fun playing with how they're a mostly incompetent trio that stumbles their way into whatever success they gain.

Momoa for Broly

right. i don't have an issue with going asian lead/mixed supporting cast for this nor for akira. it's a comprise if they're not going to go all asian for either one.

I mean there are a few characters in the series that could be played by white people more than likely. I did like the casting of Rossum as Bulma.

Goku is pretty much the Japanese Superman. So, it stands to reason that an Asian or Asian American actor would play him. That's why people take issue with White actors playing him. The same way they would if Superman wasn't played by an White dude or someone who looked "White enough" like Dean Cain.

Anyway, I viewed most of the characters as Asian. People like Bulma, her family, Launch, and the Androids seemed like they'd be White.

Then they had to take the extra step and make Chi-Chi asian, which was basically the insult to injury, haha.

Their Piccolo was pretty good though, given them that. My idea is a trilogy where you have:

Red Ribbon Army doing their thing, Piccolo as the main villain

Freiza as the villain in movie two.

Cell as the villain in movie three.

Assuming only a trilogy.

Yeah, they knew what they were doing. :funny:

Really, everyone but Bulma should've been Asian in the last film. But, Goku had to be White because Hollywood.
